“Good budget hotel”
Reviewed 2 March 2014

This is a good budget hotel in a convenient location. Housed in a traditional building in downtown Vancouver close to shops and restaurants and near to Stanley Park. We were upgraded to a suite after a flight delay and the staff were very welcoming and friendly. The suite was clean and comfortable but probably best to say that it is a hotel for the those looking for a good deal. Would also recommend Stepho's, the Greek restaurant across the street.

This is an honest hotel.

It's a budget hotel at a budget price with budget level facilities. And that's a good thing for downtown Vancouver.

I'm here in January 2014 in a basic first floor room at $50/day plus taxes. The room is a small, basic, clean, comfortable place. It has a tiny TV that gets enough channels to make me happy. The WIFI has a strong signal and is fast enough. And it's only a 5 minute walk to the +$250/night Bayshore where my conference is being held.

If you read the reviews back at least a year, you'll find the good reviews are after a major recent renovation. It is still an old building and a facelift only goes so far. The Barclay shows it's age under the new paint and tile. But always judge a place by what you pay and location it gives you. The Barclay works for me on both those points.

It's on Robson Street basically in the middle of the West End. If overspending on designer clothes and other brand name crap is your thing...fill your boots. The overpriced junk is spread like fungus along Robson Street just a block from the hotel.

Starbucks is on the corner, a grocery store is 2 blocks away, fast food joints and most other services are within a 5 minute walk. Location, location, location.

The Barclay has wonderful tiles in the hallways since it's recent renovations. The downside to that is the noise and echoing that is normally trapped in carpeted halls bounces down the halls. I'm used to Latin American hotels with lots of tile. I don't mind it but the noise of early risers and late night arrivals might bother some light sleepers.

Parking is a bit sketchy with a few spots available in the alley for $10/day or in a nearby parkade for $15. But remember...parking ANYWHERE in Vancouver is an invitation to lose anything you leave in your car. Empty your car completely, including documents and leave the console and glovebox open so the a--h-l- punks and crackheads can see there is nothing in there to take. I even leave a sheet of paper saying “There is nothing in here!” Car break-ins are epidemic in Vancouver. Don't blame the hotel. Blame the city, blame society, blame a weak justice system or blame yourself for leaving anything in your car.

I'm on a tight budget this trip so the Barclay has turned out to be great. When things in my industry take a turn for the better, I'll likely stay elsewhere in a bigger room with art on the walls, maybe a fridge to keep my beer cold, a clothes iron and a bigger bill at the end.

But for now, the Barclay is an honest deal.

Room Tip: I was on the ground floor with tiled hallways near the front desk. If you are a light sleeper, ask i...

we stayed there 15 days. The front desk people is always ready to help and the price is the most interesting cost position in terms of Vancouver downtown. The hotel location is the most positive remark: close to several restaurants, markets, shopping streets - at Robson Street, the main Vancouver street.

Room Tip: ask for the room with a bath: it is bigger than others

I stayed at this hotel and wanted to book a single room but was told they were sold out for the next 5-6 days and all they had was a double room or a suite, both more expensive. I booked the double room for a few days and then I wanted to book a room for 1-2 more days. I checked the hotel booking websites this time and discovered that the hotel had a less expensive queen room available. The hotel never told me about this. I inquired at the front desk and they said it was available and I booked it. Then I checked the hotel booking websites again, out of curiosity, for single rooms at the hotel, and there was a single room available for the same day I had booked the queen room. I was told by the hotel that there were not any singles available. As I had already booked the queen, I did not change the booking. I asked the front desk anyway why the hotel website said there was a single room and the hotel said there wasn't. One clerk said the hotel website did not update their bookings. I contacted the hotel website and they said it is up to the hotel to notify them of their bookings including cancellations, etc. So it sounds like it was the fault of the hotel. I asked another front desk clerk why the hotel website said there were single rooms available and he said that maybe there was a cancellation. So that was a totally different reply from what the other clerk said. So it sounds like the hotel was giving me the run around and they wanted me to pay for a more expensive room. I was overcharged when I could have had a less expensive room. What a rip-off.

Room Tip: I do not recommend this hotel.

My husband and I recently stayed for 3 nights, and it was very basic, no frills but clean. Small room that needed some wall touch ups and noise carries from slamming doors. No elevator, walk up only, although assistance was offered to carry up luggage. However, for the price, I would stay there again.

Room Tip: ask for main floor if you don't do stairs.

Avery good hotel very close to the business center, in walking distance to most locations. Lots of varied eating near Hotel. Not a good location for souvenirs, surprising but cheaper and better selection at airport.

We spent 2 nights at the Barclay Hotel and were surprised by the size of the room for 3. It was massive!! We had 2 double beds, 2 sofas and the suit consisted of 3 rooms joined together. The bed-/ bathroom were clean and the beds comfortable, we even had 4 pillows to choose from.
We didn't really enjoy the breakfast (paid separately) but there are coffee shops and a wonderful bakery just around the corner. The hotel's location is perfect for everybody who wants to do some touristy things like Stanley Park and such. Bars, restaurants, coffee - all around the corner. I can recommend staying at the Barclay Hotel- if you don't need a fancy hotel! Refrigerator in the room, too. No elevator - but helpful stuff offered to carry our suitcase.
