“Good city hotel”
Reviewed 17 December 2013

Good location; close to nightlife on Granville, close to food/shopping on Robson. Good price, liked the free parking package. Rooms are a bit dated, but all the essentials are there so can't really complain.

Staying at the studio suite. Very good view with the downtown area. Room is big and clean. Staff is friendly. Restaurant is great. Only I didn't know how to set up the alarm clock. But then I asked front desk for a wakeup call so no problem at all.

We stayed here because there was a staff event in the hotel. What a dump! Then there was a fire alarm at 12:30 at night and absolutely NO Direction or instruction from hotel staff. Never Again! There is no hotel services (try getting ice).

Two fire alarms (one at 10:30pm and one at 12:30am) in a three night stay. The alarm was 'broken' according to stay and certainly should have been fixed after the first false alarm on our first night.

Amin H, Director of Sales at Century Plaza Hotel & Spa, responded to this review, 23 December 2013
Dear Simon,

I wanted to say thank you for your response with regard to the fire alarm going off at the hotel. It is disappointing that your slumber was disturbed while you were trying to sleep. I do understand how frustrating that can be as I have suffered a similar inconvenience at a hotel in Seattle. I am also appreciative of the fact that the hotel had an alarm and I was able to leave the building with my wife and two small children in a safe and orderly manner.

Although this was a false alarm in Seattle just like the two at our hotel I think the fact that there is an alarm and you were woken up by the alarms is the way the system should work.

The statement that the Fire Alarm was broken is not accurate. The fire alarm worked the way a fire alarm is supposed to. The fire alarm system detected what was considered a danger and It went off. The guests/staff were alerted and no one was injured.

Simon I do apologize for the inconvenience and the disrupted sleep I would be pleased to speak with you directly any time to discuss the issue further.

Thank you for your comments.

Matthew Lynam
Director of Sales.

We stayed on a travel zoo coupon. It was nice to have a downtown location and parking included for the price. The hotel is in serious need of remodelling and new mattresses! The staff was friendly and helpful.

For the first time since my husband and I met and fell in love, we will be spending Christmas apart. Since this is our last full weekend together before flying off to our respective parent's homes, we decided to make this our Christmas.

Since our friend was hosting her annual fabulous Christmas party in Vancouver on Saturday, we thought that a whole weekend in Vancouver would be special, so we got a hotel here, at the Century Plaza.

Our first impressions were really really great. Great location right downtown in the West End, with a free secured parking area.
Front desk staff were friendly and professional, doorman very welcoming and helpful, check-in process a breeze. Our room is very spacious with incredible views of the city skyline. It even has a kitchen, which we didn't need but noted for potential future stays. When we mentioned a missing lightbulb in the lamp, they sent someone to put one in while we were out.

Our package came with a $20 credit, a nice little bonus, except that the restaurant was closed for a private event, but I'm sure we can still used it for breakfast.

So here's where it all went sideways: around midnight or so, just as we were settling in to bed, a voice came on over an intercom announcing that there was a fire alarm, await further instructions, then the alarm came. So down the 29 flights if stairs we went in our pj's to wait outside for the fire department to conclude their inspection, then into the lobby to wait some more, then the long line-up for the elevators to take those of us staying on the upper floors back to our room... At no time did any of the staff announce what was going on, or give us instructions, we just followed the herd.

It was almost 2am before we returned to our room, which was boiling hot. We could not adjust the thermostat, and too exhausted to deal with finding someone to fix it, so we opened the windows to let some cold air in and went to sleep.

The heaters clicked and banged all night. I awoke now to tiny scratches all over my ankles, from something stuck to the sheets, i'm not sure what it is, maybe a melted plastic tag or something. It 's a small thing, I know, but combined with the hot dry air, which has dried out my nose, eyes, and given me dry itchy skin, the added itchy scratches on my ankle is most annoying.

Anyway, we tend to see the positive in most situations, so perhaps a nice breakfast with our $20 credit will help turn this experience around for us before we check out. I can't wait to get out of this cloying heat, and go home to finally get some much needed rest.
