I was booked into HI Jericho by my tour operator and I wasn't happy. It is so far out of town and not even walking distance to restaurants. We had to eat at the cafe downstairs with a limited menu and a cook that did not want to take your order let alone make you anything (in between popping out for a smoke) took agessss to get our average meals. The setting was like an old mental hospital, very old and run down. Wouldn't go back

Peaceful.. out of the center of the city and the beach is nearby.. But the staff are a horrendously miserable crew. If you are hoping to have an online conversation with anyone lasting more than an hour for a sentence or two this is the place to stay.

The woman serving breakfast in the cafe could not have had more contempt for the patrons if she tried. Throwing utensils in disgust, slumping shoulders at requests, audible sighs etc. Leave your problems and your life issues at home dont bring them to work when people are looking at traveling the world each morning.

The internet does not work at all here save but for a tiny space in the lobby.. The same place that 30 other people are trying to either log on or check in..

THe sneering snobberry of the housekeeping stafff was a marvel too.. a simple good morning results in a mumbled reply and averted eyes .. as though a conversation with a guest might infect their social standing.. All in all a beautiful facility ruined by a miserable staff whose idea of customer service can only be derived from their collective experience as prison guards and security guards

Hi,

First, I must say sorry for the delay in my response. Secondly, I'd like to thank you for such an honest and insightful review.

Your review has since become part of our training material, and while I'm sorry that we certainly didn't meet your expectations (or mine) during your stay, we aspire to do better. I hope that your comments will help us to get there, since each new season we begin with new staff.

Shortly after your review, we began to make changes - changes in training and supporting our staff, and also changes to our operations. it became apparent that our cafe service was not meeting expectations, so we changed it. We changed the management, the menu, and most of the decor in the cafe to try and improve the services provided. Our cafe is now run by the North Shore Culinary School; a non-profit organization teaching students, who otherwise couldn't afford culinary training, the skills to re-enter the workforce. While I agree I'm biased, I really do think the quality of food and service in our cafe is now far greater than anything we've had before.

Our wireless situation is improving as we have made equipment and service provider upgrades, but we still realize that we must do more to meet the demands that we have been experiencing. We hope that this season, and with further guest feedback, we will finally find a more suitable solution.

Again, thank you for taking the time for your review.

I can't say enough good things about this place. Clean and friendly,!. Beds were clean and storage lockers were spacious. The beach was fantastic!!!!! So easy to access the gardens, the mountains and downtown, the public transportation in this city cannot be beat! The Vancouver Folk Music Festival is here ! http://thefestival.bc.ca/#

I stayed in Vanouver for a week and stayed in this HI. It is a little outside (20-30min into town) and you need to walk a little from the bus stop to get there (depending on your luggage it takes longer... ;) ). The hostel is nice, clean and near the beach (5min). The big dorm rooms don't seem as big, as there are little compartments with four beds (if you're lucky as i was you get a bed at the very end - there's only two there...). There's loads of showers - if you go and check upstairs. There's a big kitchen that get's cleaned daily. The Internet connection was free - but also often not working properly and had to be reset on a regular basis. Other from that it's a nice place. There are also tours you can join or parties depending on the time you're there. As far as i remember it's only open during the summer months though.

A group of us used this hostel in June 2010. Very friendly and accomodating staff I have to say. Could not ave being friendlier.
As you'd expect with a building of this age, the facilities were a bit dated but well maintained and very clean including the shower/bathroom facilities. The dorm we stayed in were quite large (14 beds to a dorm) but they are somewhat enclosed in sets of four so you do not feel like your sharing with more than four. The only negative about the stay was there was a smell of urine in the dorm when you first enter it, however its not overpowering when you settle in and this couldve been something temporary hopefully. Beds were very clean and comfortable and were away from any source of noise.
Food in the canteen was very good for a hostel and not expensive and the self catering kitchen facilities were spot on.
A big plus for me was the location. its a bit outside the city but its beside a beautiful beach and pier with some very friendly local crab fisherman going about there business and breathtaking views of the City skyline.
I would definetly recommend this hostel and I would be hard to please.

i picked this hostel in vancouver because it was slighly out of the city and i had heard mixed reports about the other hostels in the city. it did not disappoint - tho i was slighly shocked by the sheer size of the dorms! 14 beds! but to be honest it never felt like there was 14 beds in my dorm the whole time i was there - as they are sectioned off in groups of four beds with walls and cupboards in between. the beds were comfortable, a good size and the ladder to the top bunk was one of the best ladders ive come across - steady and not sore on your feet to climb up.

it is out of the city but there is a good bus service to and fro the area with the bus stop a 5 minute walk from hostel and the beach is a three minute walk.

the internet wifi is questionable but not really a problem unless you are desperate and they do sell internet time at the hostel.

staff were always pretty friendly

good laundry room with plenty of washing machines and dryers and you can buy laundry powder from reception.

the bar and restaurant were okay - food edible but not gourmet! they only started the free breakfast on my final return to the hostel which i thought was a great idea - wish they had started it sooner. but there are supermarkets scattered down the road from the hostel and the city but you obviously need to get a bus to them as nothing is really walking distance - tho i think its a known walk to the city from the hostel (but its some distance!) so if you dont fancy walking a bus is needed.

the only thing i would like to see them change is the bathrooms - wasnt that fussed on the showers! the showers just had a curtains as a 'door' it was easy to flash people. never had a problem getting a shower tho or a toilet.

overall id stay there again in a heartbeat and recommend it for all. its a nice hostel.

Staff:
The staff was very friendly and helpful, especially the guy downstairs at the bar really seems to enjoy his job and is passionate about his cooking and giving "beer-advice".

Location:
The Hostel is a little bit far away from centre, but therefore very quiet and relaxing. Jericho beach is right around the corner. Really nice environment.

Room:
We stayed at the "arbutus" mixed dorm, which had about 8 bunks. The bunks were placed into recesses of two each, which provides lots of privacy and space for a dorm room. The lockers offer lots of space and can be locked with a padlock.

Shower Facilities:
The showers and toilets were a little rustic, but clean.
