This hotel is kitted out in the style of an ocean liner. It has excellent views over downtown vancouver and gives an affordable and fun place to stay. There's lots to do such as a gym, inside and outside hot tub, mini golf and shuffle board (and most of these can be used at no extra charge). Downtown is walkable (about 45 mins) abd there are frequent buses and an underground car park.

I'd stay there again!

The worst thing about this place is that you don't realize how much it sucks until you've stayed there a day or two. The amazing part is that it's usually almost full, and at the prices. 950 for a closet, and 1350 for a very mediocre 1 bedroom. Be ready for an extra $70 "maintenance fee" they mention just as they're about to give you your key.

The facilities:
The pool is outside and not heated. Great idea in a city like vancouver. It had a sheet of ice over it a few weeks back
The hottub is very old and dingy, looks like it was built in the 70's.
The "health club" is laughable. The equipment are antiques.
The movie room is not a room you would want to watch a movie in. Basically, all the facilities or "features" they list on the site which sound great are all just so they can advertise them as features. None of them were ever being used and smelled like dingy rooms that were never used, probably because half of them are on the underground floor.

The complimentary breakfasts are at the in-house restaurant, which is actually a Japanese restaurant. I love Japanese food, but they do not know how to cook western breakfasts. I fellow resident warned me not to eat the omlette. The pancakes tasted like water, and the ham and eggs had no flavor, with the ham actually being a spam like substance shaped like a piece of ham. I ate 2 meals and threw the rest of the coupons out.

The worst part of my experience was the smell in the room, cleverly masked on the first day by air fresheners. After the first day the room starts to smell like an ashtray. I found this strange since they insited there was no smoking in the building. After the first night, smell the shirt you wore to bed. You will literally smell like an ashtray. Even worse, once you move out, everything you kept in the room that can hold an odour smells like old cigarettes, even clothes I put in cupboards and didn't wear. This is the honest truth, and I couldn't believe it.

I usually take overly negative ratings with a grain of salt, they're often revenge posts. The internet has no shortage of smear campaigns. And this place isn't hell on earth, but it just plan sucks, all around. Every picture of the "features" you see on the site is a big disappointment in person, and none of the features that look like places to hang out (cupid gardens, movie room, outside dining, so called games rooms, etc), you will not want to spend any time in. And this entire building apart from the front desk area smells like ashtray. If I sound negative, I'm upset that they wouldn't refund my money after I tried to make an early exit. I pleaded that I felt duped into a room that smelled borderline the 1st day but horrible from then on. Yet I got the smug attitude of a management that is comfortable with their 80% occupancy rate, as they point to the fine print of the rental contract.

I checked out before 2 weeks was up. I'm not overly picky, but this building is a huge disappointment, and probably only worth half of what they charge.

What an awful hotel. Don't stay there if you don't have to. Rooms look like a 1970's camper. Smells awful. Dirty. Awful, awful, awful. Wasted lots of money on this one. Go to priceline and get a good room for less than you pay at this one. What a joke!!

I have stayed at this B&B four different times and each time was just the same. A good decent inexpensive place to stay in Vancouver, BC, Canada. Breakfast is included, and it's a good breakfast. The single rooms are tiny, but good enough for one person. The two-room suites are better for two people. I don't know how two people could fit into the small pull-out bed in the single room unless they are pretty small people!! The location is good, a quick walk down 4 blocks to the main road into town where there are many busses you can hop on for a quick ride to downtown Vancouver. I've stayed at more expensive hotels on Robson street, but all you get is a bigger room there. I don't know why people rate this place so low, it is a nice inexpensive B&B and doesn't pretend to be anything else but that. The views from the upper floors facing the city are great! There is a pool guests can use which is nice but it's not fully indoor and got kinda cold even in summer at night. I haven't used the hot tub.

  • Liked — The price - they have a microwave, sink and refridge in the room!!
  • Disliked — Pretty small single rooms

The rooms are very small and not very clean. If you have any kind of back pains or hip do not sleep on the so called bed, you will not be able to get out of it in the morning that is if you can sleep at all, I have had better night sleep in a tent on the ground. I have travelled quite a bit and have never stayed at a place where I said I would never stay again until now.

I stayed for 8 days while relocating to vancouver and once I upgraded to a larger room was quite comfortable. If I was just going to stay 1 or 2 nights the smaller room would have been ok. Staff at front desk and restaurant were friendly. My room faced the back and was extremely quiet and the bed was comfortable. The only irritating thing was that you have to purchase wireless from the restaurant and the signal is quite weak up in the rooms so you have to sit in the lobby or restaurant if you want to use your computer.

Sometimes when one says, "You get what you pay for" it has negative connotations. But in the case of Shaughnessy Village
it is absolutely true-- with a positive spin. This hotel is ridiculously cheap in comparison to other hotels in Vancouver, yet it still provides a clean, safe, convenient, comfortable accommodations. Albeit, it comes with a dose of tiny rooms, dated kitschy decor, and service with sass.

I have stayed in many high class and low brow hotels in Vancouver, and this hotel is definitely not high class. But, for the same money as the other low-brow hotels, Shaughnessy Village
does NOT have a club thumping downstairs, bottles breaking outside, fists fighting in the streets, or hookers in the lobby. It is truly a cheap alternative for a good night's sleep.

The rooms are indeed tiny. Best for only one or two persons who will sleep well and shower in the room. The hotel itself is well appointed with a small weight-room, swimming pool, jacuzzi, restaurant, and parking garage. Again, it comes with a hefty dose of quirky marine decor. But for this price, I don't care. If YOU want to spend twice as much for silly frills and shallow service, stay elsewhere. But if you want a good night's sleep at a really good price just outside the downtown core, this hotel is a good alternative.

  • Liked — Very affordable clean rooms in a close-in location
  • Disliked — The decor was cheezy. It is not within walking distance of downtown shopping.
