“Great location”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 10 August 2014

Recently stayed 3 nights at this hotel in a King room. The room was small and a little outdated with a very very small bathroom. This is a very busy hotel and upon check in around 3:15 PM the room was not ready but after about 40 minutes we were good to go.
First thing we noticed in the room was the bathroom which still had used soap & long black hairs in the tub.........contacted the front desk and they had it cleaned while we were out.

Too $$$$ for what you get.l.

Although I am a holiday inn member and have stayed at this hotel in the past, We will stay elsewhere the next time we visit Vancouver.

Room Tip: Upper floors if you can afford them....

Dear Tom O,

I am sorry for the first impressions of your room. This room clearly was not in a ready, sellable state and I apologize that this has ruined your experience with us. We would prefer that you give us another opportunity to redeem ourselves when you are back in Vancouver. Please feel free to contact me so I can assist-tanner@hivancouverdowntown.com

Sincerely,

First and foremost the staff here were brilliant. We really felt that they went far above and beyond for us and looked after us well. This includes waiting staff in the Restaurant/Bar/Breakfast area, the cleaning staff in the rooms and even the laundry staff. We have never felt more welcome in a hotel.

The swimming pool was clean, but only really suitable for adults or very strong child swimmers - do not expect little ones to be able to use the pool, and there are no poolside changing, so you must change in your room and make your way down.

There was wifi throughout the hotel - free, but a little patchy. However, being able to get a drink, go sit on the balcony and use a tablet to catch up with the world peacefully was brilliant.

The food was okay, with the breakfast staff more than happy to give us grilled tomatoes and fresh eggs. We didn't like the powdered egg based scrambled eggs, so getting some fried eggs done was brilliant. Kids eat free too! We ate one evening here - and it was not poor, but nothing special either.

The amenities near the lobby were very clean and well presented.

The room we had was on the 4th floor. We had a little trouble with some noisy neighbours who were up partying all night - we informed the staff who unsucessfully asked the neighbours to quieten down- this was from about 3am to 7am! We also found a bit too much AC unit noise too.

The beds were nice, the TV worked and the room furniture was good, but the desks were arranged so that stuff had a habit of falling down the back and being very difficult to retrieve. The light switches didn't quite make sense. The kettle in the room was a bit of a deathtrap - not fused, no switch - you just plugged it in (us style sockets - no switches, no fuses, just take care) and grabbed it later. The walls were aging Artex.

The bathroom was not so great, although it was well provisioned with towels and soaps. The bathtub itself was a bit stained. The toilet was a bit remedial - with the annoying front cutout that I'd associate with waiting rooms in very poor council offices in the Uk - although we found these a lot in Vancouver. The bathroom door did not close properly.

We eventually figured out the air conditioning - but setting the temperature was non-intuitive.

However, the staff were so very excellent - so much better than I've seen elsewhere that I highly recommend this place.

Room Tip: You may want a floor above the 4th, and see if you can get the south block with balcony views.

This was our last stop of our Rockie Mountianeer trip prior to boarding a ship for an Alaskan cruise. This is the only hotel of the train part of our trip that we stayed 2 nights. This hotel is in a great location. You are close to many restaurants, shops, drug stores, the Vancouver Lookout, nightlife, Laundromat and probably many other things I'm just unaware of. Check in was very fast, but we were one of the first off the bus and didn't have to wait in line. The hotel was clean, the bed comfortable and the hotel had 2 washers and dryers which we needed to wash our clothes before starting our cruise. The room was quiet as we did not hear our neighbors or any noise from outside either night. We ate breakfast in the café both mornings and the food and service was exceptional. The front desk was helpful with directions and dinner options. The only downside we found was the elevators are small, in my opinion, and do not hold many guest at one time, so there would be a line waiting for the elevator from time to time. We really liked the neighborhood this hotel was in. We walked around both days checking out the area and found everyone to be nice, friendly and helpful. I would stay here if I am ever in Vancouver again.

We arrived around 2 pm after a long flight. We had two rooms booked, only one room was ready. We had to put all our bags in the one room and kil a few hours till the second was ready. We spent two nights here, the first and last nights of a tour. They were good size rooms. One with a large double bed, the other two big beds. Comfy beds and pillows. Huge tv. Fridge, hair dryer, coffee maker, kettle for tea drinkers a thoughtful addition. Iron and board. Lots of light and mirrors. Good surfaces re writing etc. for such a big modern hotel the lifts were very small. Nice pool and terrace to have a drink and relax on. Breakfast $17. Starbucks across the road if you don't want to pay out for a big breakfast. We ate there and in the hotel, both very good. Restaurants nearby - good one was the steak and cheese just round the corner. Superb meal - very cheap. Trams run along the road. Free wifi good speed. On the second night we were given keys to a room which was already occupied, and the keys opened the door. Fortunately, the couple in the room were also on our tour, so we had a bit of a laugh, and fortunately, they were fully clothed when we let ourselves into their room, or it could have been very embarrassing. However it is quite concerning that this could happen, what if someone less than honest was allowed to enter someone's room, and they were absent? Management were apologetic and gave us two free breakfasts (we had to pay for the others). Overall a good hotel conveniently located. Can't say if it was a good price as it was included in the tour.

I stayed here with my two boys a month ago. We had a spacious room with an extra double bed for the kids. Room was clean and everything worked!
There is a gym which is fine and even a small pool.
I would say breakfast was disappointing though, with little choice and not much fruit. Also was not much ambiance to the place.
In all fine for a few days to take in the attractions.

This hotel was the most disappointing of our trip to Canada/USA. The hotel needs upgrading and it's Wifi is virtually usless and despite us complaining to the hotel no improvement was forthcoming. We decided not to eat in the hotel and we were happy that we were only staying one night.

Dear AilbheDublin,

Thank you for taking the time to express your thoughts and concerns. It is regrettable that this stay was a disappointment on several aspects especially with the Wifi connection offered and maintenance levels being sub par. Your concerns will be brought to the attention of management to ensure similar instances do not happen again in the future.

The final stop of our Rockie Mountaineer trip, the Holiday Inn was the worst of all hotels we stayed at. Over half an hour to stand in the Lobby and wait for our room key. After 12 hours on the train this was a poorly handled arrival at our destination. Once we settled in, we went to sit down on the outside 2nd floor terrace to have a cigarette, we were approached by a local native chap who then took offense to us not wanting to talk to him, he appeared drunk and was talking jibberish. We were sitting down at a table when he came up behind us and stood over us from behind, quite threatening. We went to the Reception and complained, there were 2 other groups staying there that later told us they had the same experience. The receptionist woman tried to explain to the man about other guests privacy but he pulled the race card and threatened her that he would call his lawyer. The Manager later told us that they couldn't do anything because he was staying at the hotel and they might get sued if the Police came and he got injured while being ejected. What a joke, a real copout. In hind sight I should have called the Police myself. Just not good enough for an International class Hotel.
The the next thing was the Business Centre!, another joke, basically a Desktop Computer and a printer on the first floor. The Printer didn't have any ink in the cartridge. I was trying to print out our airline tickets which had been altered and sent to us by e-mail. I walked up and down the stairs to the Reception 4 times trying to get the browser to open, before flipping out on the Reception Attendant.
Eventually the Manager came and shook the cartridge and opened the browser and we got our printing done. The wi-fi (in the room) never did connect, excuse was the hotel was full, this is not good enough in the 21st century.

On the up side, apart from the above the, the breakfast in the Cafe was good and the Restaurant staff friendly, and the first floor smoking terrace was welcomed, the only comfortable outdoor location to relax and have a coffee and a smoke at a Hotel in Canada out of seven we stayed at during our visit. The rooms were clean and the beds comfortable, central location and the keys worked.

Dear trainwrecktourist,

Thank you for sharing feedback from your recent visit with us. I am sorry for the delay in checking you in. When we have tours in such as guest's from Rocky Mountaineer we do need to check in each guest, discuss details of their stay and assist with any inquiries they have. At times this can cause a delay for some guests but we do not want to ensure each guest gets the time they need.
Regaring the interactions with a mutual guest we will contact the Police when safety is compromised. I can assure you that the concern is not someone being injured while in the hands of the Police.
Our guestroom internet is scheduled to be upgraded to fibre optic in the Fall. I apologize for the wifi reception, we are looking forward to the new system as this will address any internet issues.

Sincerely,

Tanner
