Description: L'Abattoir is located in the center of Gastown between historic Gaoler's Mews and Blood Alley. The restaurant was built in the 19th century and is the site of Vancouver's first jail. Originally buttressed to the city's main butchery and meat packing district, the name L'Abattoir pays homage to the neighbourhood's colourful past. Set in a refurbished brick and beam building that combines classic French tile work with industrial fixtures, natural wood, and glass and steel finishes, the restaurant offers a bar and lounge setting, elevated dining room and plush, sun soaked atrium. Chef Lee Cooper and Owner / Operator Paul Grunberg are dedicated to highlighting the finer points of eating and drinking in L'Abattoir's informed but informal setting. French influenced West Coast fare is paired with Wine Director Lisa Haley's eclectic wine program and Bar Manager Thor Paulson's innovative cocktail list to offer a truly unique dining experience. L'Abattoir adds to Gastown's bustling breakfast scene with a menu mixing comforting staples with hearty, unique entrees. Thirsty brunchers can sip on creative cocktails, as well as daily feature vermouth on the rocks. Non-alcoholic options include daily bottled house made iced teas. Just adjacent to L'Abattoir's regular dining room is the restaurant's stunning new private dining facility. The 1,200 sq ft. facility features historical architectural elements complimented by a contemporary design aesthetic. While large enough for 50 people seated or 70 standing, the room retains an intimate ambiance and a noise-reducing barrier blocks out the hustle and bustle of the regular dining room.

“Confident cooking, relaxed atmosphere”
Reviewed 23 June 2014

Visiting Vancouver from London, UK we chose to dine at L'Abattoir after reading good reviews. With such a vibrant, quality restaurant scene at home, we were not expecting too much from L'Abattoir but we found it to be a quality experience all round. Special praise to the mixologist at the bar who made an excellent Aviation (not on their menu) and set the tone with his warm, welcoming conversation - not always easy when also mixing drinks! Then upstairs for dinner. Highlights were the perfectly balanced starter of asparagus with poached egg and mushroom, and the reinterpretation of a classic Steak Diane. Nothing like the original whatsoever, but cooked with real confidence and skill. The only downside was a smoked duck dish which had too much sweet apricot on the plate, upsetting the balance by being too sweet. L'Abattoir is a friendly, relaxed restaurant with great food that deserves a visit.

“A genuine taste sensation. Don't miss it!”
Reviewed 22 June 2014

We ate at L'Abattoir last night following a recommendation from our hotel and the reviews on here. It's even better than they say. Truly superb plates of food that combine flavours we really hadn't had before. As self confessed foodies and lovers of fine ingredients this was an experience to place in my top 10 of time. Octopus salad and tuna civiche then halibut for my wide and ling cod for me. Washed this down with a BC rose; a boutique wine which was a delight. Can't recommend this place enough. Oh and faultless, friendly service as Vancouver seems to specialise in.

“Great food and great service”
Reviewed 17 June 2014

From the friendly staff to the excellent food this was a great restaurant my only complaint would be the brown plates. It feel like nails on a chalk board when using a fork and a knife, I know they are tying to be modern but I would rather have fine china when using a fork and knife !

“Amazing, beautiful place in Gastown!”
Reviewed 16 June 2014

My husband and I ended up here for dinner after a stroll through Gastown, stopping in for drinks at a few places along the way. The menu here was creative, fun, and delicious. Do not skip out on desert - make sure you save room. And the bartenders made some excellent drinks. I highly recommend.

“A wonderful place to eat in Gastown”
Reviewed 31 May 2014

My wife and I were recommended this restaurant by a waitress at another eatery in Vancouver. We have to say that the recommendation was excellent. The ambiance is relaxed and the food serious. We both had the lamb main course and it was an absolute delight. The food wasn't over the top with regard to price and was first rate in terms of quality.
