Description: L'Abattoir is located in the center of Gastown between historic Gaoler's Mews and Blood Alley. The restaurant was built in the 19th century and is the site of Vancouver's first jail. Originally buttressed to the city's main butchery and meat packing district, the name L'Abattoir pays homage to the neighbourhood's colourful past. Set in a refurbished brick and beam building that combines classic French tile work with industrial fixtures, natural wood, and glass and steel finishes, the restaurant offers a bar and lounge setting, elevated dining room and plush, sun soaked atrium. Chef Lee Cooper and Owner / Operator Paul Grunberg are dedicated to highlighting the finer points of eating and drinking in L'Abattoir's informed but informal setting. French influenced West Coast fare is paired with Wine Director Lisa Haley's eclectic wine program and Bar Manager Thor Paulson's innovative cocktail list to offer a truly unique dining experience. L'Abattoir adds to Gastown's bustling breakfast scene with a menu mixing comforting staples with hearty, unique entrees. Thirsty brunchers can sip on creative cocktails, as well as daily feature vermouth on the rocks. Non-alcoholic options include daily bottled house made iced teas. Just adjacent to L'Abattoir's regular dining room is the restaurant's stunning new private dining facility. The 1,200 sq ft. facility features historical architectural elements complimented by a contemporary design aesthetic. While large enough for 50 people seated or 70 standing, the room retains an intimate ambiance and a noise-reducing barrier blocks out the hustle and bustle of the regular dining room.

Went here for a romantic honeymoon dinner after reading some reviews and the food exceeded every expectation I had of the place. Every course was divine, full of flavour and everything on the plate worked perfectly together. Only downer was the noise, was a hit hard to hear my husband but the quality of the food outweighs this negative. Huge fans and will recommend to anyone travelling to Vancouver.

Was a bit unsure about the place as first because of the mixed review.
But we had a wonderful dinner here. Our English Yorkshire waiter was a delight and attentive without being in your face and giving us good recommendations.
The food was great. We ordered the crab tartine and meat ravioli with beetroot, halibut and smoked duck (to perfection) and the chesnut spice cake with peach sorbet and jelly champagne... Overall a very good value restaurant...

I love this place, yes it is expensive and yes parking is terrible but once you are inside especially in the back room you enter heaven. The food is delicious and the service is impeccable. I ordered the halibut and french fries and have never had fish cooked so deliciously! The grapes they put in was a real special treat. For my birthday I received a free dessert that was delicious berries with granola. The wine list is a little bit pricy but this is a chic gastown restaurant so expected it.

Would definitely come back due to lovely service, romantic atmosphere and amazing food! I feel it is worth every penny!

Reservations are a must even on weekdays.

Dropped in for supper at 6pm with our two children ages 4 yrs and 9 months (!). Weren't sure how we would be received, but the service was just outstanding. Immediately we felt welcome - our waitress suggested a nice plain gnocci and cheese dish for our 4 year old, and various staff members appeared genuinely pleased to pick up the odd toy or spoon that fell to the ground. Even though we knew we were pushing the limits by eating in a restaurant like this with two young kids, we had a wonderful night out. Really exceptional service from the door to the table. Food was delicious, especially the smoked duck breast. Worth a visit for sure. We will be back.

Went for dinner based on strong reviews online, but found food disappointing. The flavour combinations were adventurous and sounded okay on paper, but didn't quite deliver on the plate. Pork belly with salsa verde and turnips was just unpleasant. Asked for a wine recommendation, but staff was clueless. My cocktail tasted like sweet fruit juice and nothing else. Not worth it, in my opinion.
