We chose the Fairmont when we decided to check out of our first hotel because of the construction noise. We saw the hotel as we were shopping on Robson St. and loved how beautiful and elegant it looks on the outside. Because we did not have an advanced reservation, the only rooms available were suites or those on the Gold level at $400+ a night. As soon as we exited the elevator on the Gold level, we were met by 2 very friendly, enthusiastic concierges who showed us around the sitting/dining area and kitchen that was stocked with water, tea, coffee and other snacks. They were extremely helpful in suggesting placed for us to eat and visit Our room was a good size and we shared a living room with 2-3 other rooms. The room is furnished in a mahogany antique style which seemed a little blah. The bed needed to be updated with a new mattress and didn't seem to be the quality I would expect from the Fairmont. The bathroom was a little disappointing with a tub type shower, but the Le Labo bath products made up for it!

In the morning, we decided to check out the buffet breakfast on our floor and was very impressed. The buffet had eggs benedict, waffles, oatmeal, pastries, smoked salmon, fresh fruit, smoothies and more . My husband and I were made to feel welcome and were brought fresh juices and coffee while we relaxed and read the paper.

The hotel is very grand and it was nice to get the personal attention we received. The staff on the Gold level is top-notch and made our stay very special. As far as I'm concerned, it is the only way to go!

My husband stayed here for our wedding night and checked in very late. Having not eaten at our wedding, we were starving! There was of course no restaurants open. I just mumbled to my husband that I was hungry as we were checking in and the gentleman at the front desk just asked us to wait for a moment. He came back with a plate of assorted cheeses, crackers and grapes that they provided to us at no charge! They also upgraded us to a special area of the hotel, which was a much more expensive room! We were also provided with complimentary breakfast in our room, which was delicious.

Checked in late at the Fairmont after a long day of travel. No assistance offered with our luggage and the staff at reception were indifferent (bordering on rude). When we insisted that we were entitled to a free dinner (not breakfast as they claimed) My husband had to show them our itinerary before they would hand over the vouchers!
They explained that we would need to use our room key to operate the lifts but we had trouble figuring out how to do so. Not sure if we had to wave, swipe or insert the card (you have to realise it was late and we are not very tech savvy)
When we got to the room it was dark and we spent several minutes trying to find the light switches. Eventually we worked out that we needed to switch on the bedside lamps.
We were so happy when we finally climbed into our very comfortable bed. Just as we put our heads on the pillow a very loud and embarrasingly long noise of a guy urinating in the toilet of room next door startled us (it seriously was so loud that it sounded like he was in our bathroom with the door open)
We managed to use our free dinner vouchers and that was a bit of a comedy.
Initially the waitress gave us menus but when we produced our vouchers our menus were whipped out of our hand and replaced by a cheaper looking/limited choice menu.
Happily, the food turned out to be very nice indeed and the service in the restaurant was much better than at reception.
Finally. We advised reception the night before we checked out to join a tour that we would take care of our own luggage the next morning (so we could sleep longer rather than have our luggage collected an hour before we were due to leave)
They couldn't even get that right and we were woken by a knock at the door in the early hours of the morning.
We had earlier stayed at The Metropolitan Hotel in Vancouver and that was so much better and friendlier.

I have to say that this hotel lives up to the standard of what one expects when they stay at a Fairmont. The interior is a great blend of a classic old city hotel with updated interiors. The rooms are very well appointed, the service is exceptional from the front door through to the bartenders and the facilities are top drawer. This is a cant miss hotel, central to everything great in Vancouver.

For starters the room was a little larger and the and the bathroom marginally so ( would dearly love a separate shower!).Like the rest tired decor but good staff. Reasonable location.

No major issues with this place. Well located for shops BUT not on waterfront (with hindsight the views from the waterfront are so amazing that I would stay next time at a waterfront hotel). Stayed in a junior suite which was large, well equipped and very good value at a little over $300.

However....the furnishings and decor are getting a bit tired, the bathroom is small with a clean but not great shower (over the bath with curtain). Public areas also a bit dated.

Not bad overall (and for the price seems a bargain) - but hard to get enthused.

WHILE I AM ON....if you come to Vancouver definitely take a boat trip up the 'Indian Arm'. One of the best bits of tourism I have ever done. You end up in the most beautiful scenery which seems remote but in fact isn't that far. There are organised tours - but we hired a boat and it was nice to go alone (also enabled us to stop for lunch in Deep Cove which was really nice).
