“Comfortable Hotel in a Great Location”
Reviewed 23 December 2013

Stayed here for 2 nights on business. The hotel is an old building situated centrally Downtown Vancouver. My room was spacious and very comfortable, breakfast was good and the gym and pool facility were great.

The staff were friendly and helpful and overall I felt it was good value and a handy location for shopping and the centre.

I love this hotel but I was very disappointed that the restaurant that I thought was so beautiful and charming when I was a teenager has now closed for good (Griffens). I jut loved that restaurant. The rooms were very nice - lots of room and the adjoining rooms we had were great. My nephew (Greg Hazlewood) did it again for my birthday. 4 rooms together this year and a surprise bottle of wine sent to us. Guess what Greg you know now that we do this every year and we have decided that maybe twice a year would be nicer. The hotel is in such a great location - steps away from Pacific Center - very nice if the weather is nasty. Because Griffens in closed now remember to make dinner reservations ahead of time as there is not as
much room now and it is busy. We were not able to get all of us in for dinner so we booked the Italian kitchen for dinner and it was great. Just across the street from the hotel. Nice and close.
I love old historic hotels with lots of history to them and this one is such a gem! See ya next year.

Dear summerPittMeadows,

Thank you for your kinds words about your recent stay. We love to hear from guests who have been a part of our long, storied history. From the sounds of it, your nephew Greg—our own Greg Hazlewood, Director of Conference Services & Catering—planned a fabulous getaway for you and your family!

From our historic spaces, luxurious accommodations, and central location, there’s much to love about a visit to the Fairmont Vancouver. I do apologize that Griffins Restaurant is no longer available, however 900 West Restaurant + Bar is a fabulous dining option. This delightful space offers creative cuisine and some of the best local flavors. We’d be happy to make you a reservation there the next time you are in town. I hope you continue to make Vancouver a part of your family traditions. It would be our pleasure to be able to welcome you back.

Yours Sincerely,

Vince Chow

The hotel is showing its age and seems tired and bit rundown in many places. it is an old aging grand hotel now.The restaurant was shut down and repairs were going on. it was not possible to even get a soup and sandwich at the Lounge after a long day of travel, though it was only around 9.30. Had to settle for very average snack in lieu. The waitress was marginally indifferent. For a hotel this reputable to not be able to serve a decent meal is inexcusable. Bed was comfortable. Room was comfortable size but faucets were shaky and leaky. Sink had no counter space. The location is fabulous though in the heart of downtown Vancouver and you can walk to Robson street and every other attraction and fabulous shopping or dining. Be prepared to pay for Valet parking. Another irritant was that you needed a key to use the elevator. the intent is to probably limit transients but everyone I saw was struggling with room keys.It has some high end stores, but could use some decent Cafe, or stores for a business traveller. I stay at Fairmonts frequently but this property needs some work done.

Dear Traveller2world,

Thank you for sharing your thoughts about your recent stay. We’re very sorry to hear that your time at our hotel did not reflect the usual high standards of Fairmont Hotels and Resorts. We know how important convenience and quality are to our guests, and that’s why we make every effort to provide the very best in accommodations, service, and cuisine in the most efficient manner possible.

Since we’re always looking for new ways to improve, parts of the hotel are, on very rare occasions, subject to construction or renovations. The timing of these projects is very carefully considered so as to limit the effects on guests’ experiences. We sincerely apologize for any inconveniences encountered during your stay. Should you find yourself in a similar situation in the future, I encourage you to contact the staff, which will be more than happy to help arrange alternate dining plans.

Lastly, I thank you for your feedback in regards to the function and condition of your room. You can rest assured that we will take care of all issues and make any necessary changes as soon as possible.

Yours sincerely,

Vince Chow

It is located right in the heart of Vancouver downtown. It's close to Robson Street, Pacific Shoppoing Centre, the Vancouver Art Gallery, etc. Yaletown and the Waterfront are also within walking distance. It's also very close to the skytran stations. The location is perfect (but so does other hotels such as the Four Seasons, Hotel Georgia, and many many others).

If you are their loyalty member, they will give you a slower complementary wi-fi/internet access. But it is slow during peak hours. Otherwise, you will have to pay about $20/day for faster access.

Their staff in general are ok. But some are very unfriendly and grumpy. The president desk check in has no staff some at times, even during peak hours (I understand they close the desk duing off hours, but under staff during peak hours? LOL).

The iPod digital clock in my room was broken. And there is another traditional clock. Why two clocks? May be they knew that one of them was broken! LOL.

There are not enough electric outlets in the room. I have to take the iron board/iron all the way across the room to get my ironing done.

The decor of the room is so outdated. Especially the bathroom. Perhaps they did this on purpose so that the appearance/feel of the room match this historic building this hotel is in...

Their gym and pool are ok. However, I noticed that the license for both, which they displayed on the wall, has been expired. Did they neglect to renew them? Or did they forget to display the latest ones? Either way, it says something about the management of this hotel and this hotel chain. By the way, I went to the gym in one afternoon and two of the shower stalls ran out of shower gel and shampoo.

All in all, it's an acceptable hotel. Nothing superb, nothing outstanding.

I chose this hotel again as it has been superior every time I have stayed. I absolutely love the remote check in option and getting an email from the hotel to let you know that your room is ready and the key can be picked up from the concierge. The rooms are big enough, the beds are very comfortable, and there is enough seating and work space for your laptop. Don't miss having a drink in lounge and a poke about the shops. Everyone is so incredibly friendly and helpful and on top if it, the location is just right being close to shopping, the art gallery, the skytrain etc.

I spend three nights at the Fairmont during a family vacation to Vancouver. It's a great hotel situated in the middle of Downtown with great restaurants in every direction. The hotel also has two resident labradors which kept my kids amused.
