“Schnitzels and Potato Pancakes”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 24 May 2013

With a name such as Cafe Katzenjammer one would expect Schnitzels and Potato pancakes to appear on the menu of this restaurant. And they do, at least on Saturdays and Sundays when we are likely to eat there, as lunch is our main meal of the day. In earlier years the Cafe was open for lunch on other days during the week though not now. Anyway the food is traditional home-made German fare. My wife prefers a Schnitzel dish, of which there are several, while I gravitate to an omelette, but substitute potato pancakes for the regular potatoes. Mind you, I also enjoy potatoes cooked in the German style. It consists of frying them slowly, preferably in butter, with some onion and a bit of parsley. As a result they never have that hot oil taste so often found at other restaurants.

Generally due to staffing problems, Cafe Katzenjammer has had some lengthy periods when the restaurant was closed. But we have always returned once it was back to serving Schnitzels and potato pancakes.

“Wunderbar!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 29 April 2013

We were spending the night in Vancouver area so we were looking for a quiet good place to eat out near UBC and stumbled onto this gem. Located in the Point Grey area near UBC, the Cafe K. is small, but has the best German food I've had outside of Germany. Not a huge restaurant, they have a very nice selection of very authentic tasting dishes! It was obvious that it attracts a lot of locals, as before long there were not a lot of tables left.

Sadly, no beer on tap, so I had to make do with a Warsteiner before digging in to a lovely meal. The Jaegerschitzel I had was topped with a wonderful mushroom gravy and the spatzle was fresh and delicious. My frau had Rouladen and german potato salad reported it was fabulous. Prices were very reasonable! Our major mistake was not leaving room for apfel strudel... Guess that's a good reason to go back

Great authentic German food, such as Potato pancakes, Goulasch, various Schnitzels. Great German beer selection like Schneider Weisse or Warsteiner Pils ! decent prices too & friendly service.

“Best Value for a Meat and Vegetable Meal in UBC 'Hood”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 16 September 2012

Returned to the Katzenjammer (translation: "The Hangover"!) desiring a simple, solid meal and were very satisfied. Schnitzel (breaded pork fillet) with two chosen side dishes offered tasty red cabbage and grilled vegetables of broccoli and red pepper, all for $14 plus tax. Friends had french fries and vegetables for $14 among the many choices. Potato pancakes (cost extra $3 I think?) were quite spiced this time and maybe not to some kids' taste. Some of us liked them and some of us didn't. Jaegerschnitzel ($16) with its mushroom sauce was declared delicious. Beer is still the same price after a year! $5 for a half pint of Warsteiner.
Pleasant Czech waitress, new chef and the same authentic decor and lugbrious manager.
Outside saw people reading the bi-lingual menu and being put off. They missed a very good meal at an economic price in perfect surroundings. Cheaper than going to Berlin! Also check out my previous review of "The Hangover".

“Good German Food in Point Grey UBC Area”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 22 October 2011

A walk in the nearby Pacific Spirit Park /Forest might give you a taste for some hearty Northern European food. The Katzenjammer is on Tenth Avenue and Sasamat Street --- on the 99 B bus route if you come from further afield. The decor is old German movie posters, the seating is comfortable and the lighting is good. The food cooked in the full view kitchen is delicious and very good value. The Schnitzel is tender and tasty. My favourite is the Jaegerschnitzel with a rich mushroom sauce. Children will like the Kartofelpoofer or potato pancakes. Warsteiner is about $5 a half litre. We have been several times to this restaurant and highly recommend it for a good meal.
Brunch is served Saturday and Sunday. Open Wednesday to Saturday evenings 5 o'clock to 8:30 PM, so it is best for an early dinner.
