My first Trip Advisor review. First off, I am a 33 year old male that doesn't know how to swim. Prior to today, I have no experience with any water sports. My friend convinced me to try this sport and take a lesson in Granville Island. Our instructor was Sarah from Water Adventures, she was very knowledgeable about this sport. Sarah was helpful and supportive for a newbie like me, which makes her very amicable. She walked us through each step; getting onto the board, standing up, paddling, sweep stroke, getting off the board, and even jumping into the water and climbing back onto the board (did not try). We stayed inside the marina alongside the docked boats, and weaved around the poles nearby the rocks on the bank. We even saw a mother and child sea otter running down the slope then swim away. At first, the adrenaline was rushing through my body, it felt like my heart was pumping uber fast, and my legs were shaking from being scared and nervous. The thought of falling into the water was terrifying... after easing into the lesson, I started to calm down and just focused on my paddling. My lower back and legs felt like jelly after our session, I must admit it's a great work out. I would recommend VWA for anyone who wants to try SUP. Go early in the morning because it's not that hot and the water is calm and steady. Repeat yes.
