We recently ate dinner at Kamei Baru and were very happy with the food and service. The restaurant seems to carry on the Kamei Sushi quality but is incorporating some of the "izakaya" (Japanese Tapas) style.

We ate four dishes between two people and felt it was an appropriate amount of food but really big eaters may want a couple more dishes.

We shared the mussels prepared in a white wine sauce. The mussels were superb, perfectly cooked. We also tried the deep fried oyster roll which was really awesome. The sauce is a mixture of mayo and Tonkatsu sauce that is awesome. We also had the Agedashi Tofu and Calamari which has a spicy kick and is a great twist on the original dish.

The prices per dish were very comparable to other high end izakaya restaurants in Vancouver and we felt the prices were close to fair, maybe a little high but ultimately the food is prepared very well and there are some variations on dishes that we enjoyed.

The staff were very friendly and proficient and I liked the large televisions showing sports highlights but others may find it distracting.

All in all we'll definitely go back and eat at Kamei Baru again.

As a local resident I've eaten here several times. I agree with an earlier poster that for the first month they were open the service was pleasant but amateurish and slow, happily it seems things have improved in recent weeks.

The food is not limited to your typical Japanese restaurant fare, there are various other dishes which will appeal to less adventurous souls, but all the food I have sampled has been well prepared, the portions were reasonable sizes and the prices were very good. There beer prices are also very attractive, especially if you buy a pitcher!

The ambiance is nice and the youthful severs are always happy and smiling, they leave you with a sense that you are welcome and they really care about making you happy.

For an inexpensive, good quality meal, this place is a winner.

We stumbled across this little gem the last time we went to Vancouver for a weekend getaway. One of the reasons for the trip was to dine. We stayed two days and ate there twice for appies. The food was great, the service awesome and it was just fun.

Because of the proximity of this space to the ScotiaBank Theatre, we have often visited the predecessor tenants before going to a movie, but this was our first visit to Kamei Baru. We ordered a number of appetizer-type dishes and a couple of beers. The food was fine and the servers were pleasant enough, but really amazingly careless. Just a couple of examples:

* Our server asked if we wanted 12 or 20 oz. beers, and we both asked for 20 oz. When the bartender (after considerable delay) brought our beers, they were just 12 oz. We pointed out to him that we had ordered the 20 oz. glasses, so he took them away, but then a couple of minutes later brought them back, asking if we really hadn't ordered 12 oz. glasses. Upon our assuring him again that we really had ordered 20 oz. glasses, he took them away again, had a lengthy conversation with our server, who finally checked her notepad and looked embarassed, and then the bartender finally brought us a couple of 20 oz. glasses (maybe the confusion was between the Japanese "ju-ni" (12) and "ni-ju" (20)?).
* Because service was very slow generally, it took a while before we realized that one of the dishes we had ordered had been forgotten and was simply never going to arrive. When our server finally reappeared after a long absence, we called her over, pointed out that one of the dishes hadn't arrived, told her to cancel it, and asked her to bring our bill. She did bring the bill, but with the missing dish still on it. We had to ask her - again - to remove that dish from our bill.

We'll probably still go back, since this really is a convenient location for a pre-theatre meal, but our expectations will be low. And, given that the previous restaurants that were at this location didn't survive, the low standard of service at this one doesn't bode well for its longevity.
