“Can't find a book? Come here! ”
Reviewed 18 June 2014 via mobile

A browsers paradise but also a great place for those hunting specific books or editions. We were desperate to get some specific books about archaeolocal sites in BC. We looked everywhere, all over Vancouver, Victoria and between. Not only did MacLeods have the books we wanted, they found them instantly and the price was good.

Don't be deceived by the look of the place (piles of great books everywhere), if you want something specific they'll know where it is. And you'll find loads of other books you never knew you needed!

“A great rabbit's nest of a used book store”
Reviewed 1 December 2013

MacLeod's is the type of used book store that has hidden treasures. Sometimes, it's frustrating because the books are (literally) piled to the ceiling, and many of the shelves are blocked by piles. But if you're looking for something in particular, the owner, Don Stewart, is a Renaissance type who instantly understands the topic and can talk about it knowledgeably. I was in looking for books about a particular period in (Asian) Indian history, and Stewart not only gave me leads about books that he didn't have, but produced several that he thought might be helpful. Browse for hours, and when you leave, pray that MacLeod's isn't hit by an earthquake or a fire because the store's treasures—both the owner and the books—are irreplaceable.

Note: Because this really is a rabbit's warren, this store isn't for people in wheelchairs. Sadly.

“The Mother of All Used Bookstores!”
Reviewed 20 August 2013

Stumbled into MacLeod's quite by accident, and 2 hours later we were still digging (literally...) through the shelves, piles, and boxes of books. It's utter chaos, with just enough organization to keep it from being totally random. If you ask "Is there a catalog or inventory?" the reply from the staff member will be a tap on his head. Incredibly, he seems to know the general whereabouts where you might find a particular title or subject. There also a basement.... That part of the store is being "renovated" and not open to the public until this fall, but staff will go search for you if he thinks your item might be there. Wear your gardening clothes, protective footwear, and a headlamp and compass (perhaps). You'll be on an expedition and exploration you'll remember.
