I had an impressive tour of the University. First of all, the drive is amazing, as you go through the best areas of town, commencing with a beautiful drive heading West along the beaches of Spanish Banks. A long road follows through one of the most picturesque neighbourhoods, surrounded by large trees, green areas and very expensive homes backing on the water.
As we arrived, the place looked immaculate. There are many old buildings with intricate architecture, everything in perfect shape. The grass areas were well kept, there was even a Japanese garden, including a small wooden bridge, where students can remove any evil spirits prior to exams. Everything is in a larger size than other Universities I've seen. Getting there is not difficult taking the bus, they have a very large bus loop, with lots of buses waiting to leave.
Now I just hope the kids can get in, a 90 average is required.

“Eclectic Look; Beautiful Location”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 3 August 2014

I have knocked my rating down a notch from where it would have been about 10 years ago, because of UBC's new emphasis on merging town and gown. Lots of new buildings with various architectural styles have gone up on campus -- condos, big houses, high-rise apartments, etc. -- for sale or lease to the general public. These structures have destroyed forever the beautiful open spaces that truly blended the academic buildings with their incredible natural environment and gave the campus an ambiance unlike others, except, perhaps, the University of California, Santa Cruz. I have been distressed to watch the rapid physical changes, especially the uprooting of magnificent trees. The look of a place has always influenced me as much as what it offers.

That said, UBC offers a lot. It still has much vegetation as well as stunning mountain and water views, and is well worth visiting. For example, the campus shows off a stunning rose garden, in season. The garden is near the lovely -- but small -- Nitobe Memorial Garden, which features Japanese horticulture. Across the street stands the fascinating Museum of Anthropology, which offers an excellent collection of First Nations artifacts (amazing totem poles) and items that represent cultures worldwide. The large and lovely UBC Botanical Garden is also on this side of campus.

Pacific Regional Park surrounds much of UBC and has shaded trails to amble along. A steep trail next to the Anthropology Museum descends to Wreck Beach, a huge expanse, where clothing is optional. On summer days, hundreds of bathers -- in swimsuits or nude -- gather for the sun or water-related activities. Spanish Banks Beach Park (clothing required) is also close by and makes a nice stop for a picnic lunch.

There is plenty to do on or near campus to allot a day here. If time does not allow that, I suggest choosing one of the many attractions for a short visit. UBC is easily reached by bus.

“Nice views and gardens ... laid back campus ...”

The views from the gardens on our way to the Museum of Anthropology were wonderful ... the college atmosphere was nice and laid back and I have heard you can rent bikes and that the Spanish Banks are really nice!

“Excellent museum, good views, mixed architecture”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 26 July 2014

The campus is a bit out of the way if you're staying downtown (we took a public bus from Burrand St.), but worth going to if you'd enjoy seeing a great anthropology musuem and a campus setting whose closest counterpart in the U.S., I think, would be the University of California, Santa Barbara (UBC is on English Bay, which is visible from several locations on campus). Some of the modern buildings are quite stunning; others are indifferent and a couple are fairly hideous. But we explored several nooks and crannies of campus in a two-hour walk and enjoyed it very much.

This campus just keeps growing, lots of places to eat and right next to Spanish Banks, you can combine a visit to both.
