A rare full score for me. We had heard that, since Vij's (VEE-jays) doesn't take reservations you had to get there early. They have seats for slightly more than 50. By the time they opened their doors at 5:30, there were over 60 in line. We were first in line having arrived at 4:40. If you arrive a little late you may be able to sit inside at the bar area, but most end up waiting outside. That being said, they realize it is tragic to be able to smell the food and not have any so hors d'oeuvres are served, which are very tasty in and of themselves.

For instantly seating the entire restaurant, they did an excellent job getting the food out in a timely manner, for everybody. The staff seems to continuously circle the room, as a team, serving peoples needs/wants... very efficient.

But people don't go there just for the service or the wait area snacks (which are also served to people waiting at their tables). They go there for the great Indian food. Ranked as the Best Indian food in a city with many, many India restaurants, and atthe time of this writing holding the top TA spot for Vancouver, one has to ask if these ratings are valid. Simple answer, Yes!

Having looked on-line at their menu we had pretty much settled on what we wanted to have before we arrived...
Yam, Paneer and Cabbage Kofta and the Jackfruit in the cardamom and cumin as appetizers, though I would have liked to try the Punjabi Heart Attack (and if it hadn't been called that, maybe I would have)
For mains we had...
BC Prawns and halibut in a coconut-lemon curry sauce
Saag-paneer with lentil curry, and
a great chicken dish that I can no longer remember the name of.

The portions are nicely sized... not too much, not too little, and everything tasted to the level you'd expect from one of the best restaurants in the city if not well beyond. Now, I like Indian food and I've sought out Indian restaurants all over the world. Vij's is in the top three in the world for me and the top two in North America (both of which are in Western Canada).

We then waddled to a taxi for a ride back to the hotel. We will waddle there again in the future.

Best place to go for Indian food. Get there early or plan to wait. We got there 30 minutes before they opened and we weren't the first in line. Such a great experience inside. Friendly service. Generous snacks as you wait. My entree popped with flavor. Incredible value on top of it all. Can't wait to return.

The only bad points are the wait (it was 1 hr 45 min in a Sat nite) and that its far from the downtown area, you have to take a cab. Love how the owner walks around and meets with everyone. The inside of the restaurant is like an enchanted forest. Really truly fabulous.

I've been to Vij's a few times over the years, and they're one of the few restaurants that maintains an excellent standard of quality and service. The prices aren't that high, and the dishes tend to be very rich and flavorful (the lamb 'popsicles' are a long-standing favorite...and the lemon-ginger soda is almost better than any cocktail). I always leave feeling stuffed. If you've never been, it's worth a visit.

A word to the wise; the wait for a table on weekends can be pretty long (2 hrs sometimes), so either go early or try to go on a weeknight. But even then its worth it to hang out it the bar / lounge and sample some of the yummy hors d'oeuvres that the wait staff bring around.

I've been here several times and am always impressed. This is one of the best places in Vancouver year after year. The wine list is very extensive and knowledgeable friendly staff can help you with a pairing. You can't go wrong here.
