“Fantastic Old Growth Forest Walks”
Review of Avatar Grove

Avatar Grove
Reviewed 30 July 2014

This grove of very large trees includes Douglas firs and cedars. They are huge and surrounded by lush vegetation. The marked trails above and below the road are a must and enable you to walk up close to these majestic giants. The lower trail is prettier as it is in an area with lush growth of ferns and near water while the upper trail is more open along a steep slope. If time is limited, take the lower trail walk. Please stay on the trails as the lush forest floor is easily damaged. There is very limited parking alongside the gravel road so do be careful as logging trucks can arrive suddenly. The grove is on a busy logging road (Gordon Main), about 10 minutes out of Port Renfrew. Get a map from the visitor’s center in town.

Take the time to walk both the upper and lower paths. On the lower path, there are two paths, the left one in my opinion is an easier trail. We visited in the morning during the week so the trails were not crowded. Avatar Grove is well signed. Head towards Port Renfrew, but turn right before going into town. Wear an older pair of pants and good shoes, preferably hiking boots. We used walking sticks to make the walk easier. Pack some water and a snack and enjoy the beauty of these ancient trees.

Avatar Grove is beautiful, full stop. The thing is, as long as tourists keep piling in it will no longer be beautiful. Unlike Cathedral Grove there are no boardwalks, railing etc to keep people in line so people keep wandering off trampling the wildlife and ruining the undergrowth. A lot of root systems there are damaged and the wildlife gets disturbed. Port Renfrew is really pushing for this Grove to be a tourist destination under the guise of "saving it from the loggers" when really all they are doing is destroying it by bringing in inconsiderate tourists to trample this once pristine area.

Luckily this site requires effort to find so many don't bother going. It's about 15 minutes from Port Renfrew on bad logging roads.

Again, it is a beautiful location but as a local to the area I hope it never catches on with tourists.

A must see on Vancouver Island. Minutes away from Juan de Fuca provincial park. Couple of hours away from Victoria. Trees were so beautiful. Stumbled upon a 1000 year old cedar, simply amazing. If you like bit of an adventure then highly recommended.
