The Surf Motel sits across the street from the Juan de Fuca Strait and overlooks the iconic Ogden Point Breakwater. Every room faces the water. Our room was on the third floor (top floor) and we spent several warm evenings enjoying apres-dive drinks on our sunny deck.
The room was clean and bright, the kitchen appliances (stove, oven, fridge) worked perfectly and the bathroom was roomy.
Management was very friendly and helpful, and they had no issues with us bringing our dive gear in and out (we were respectful).
The Surf is not a luxury hotel, but for divers or independent-minded tourists who appreciate a laid-back vibe & unsurpassed view, the Surf Motel is very hard to beat!

Room Tip: Third floor rooms have the best view.

The best thing about this hotel is the location. Waking up to the view of the Strait is awesome.
I have stayed here in the past and the hotel could have used some updating. This has been done. The room was recently renovation in a retro theme. The room was big and comfy with a full kitchen and amenities, the bed was very comfortable.
The desk clerk was really nice and helpful.
Of course since the hotel is on Dallas Road and has a bus stop it can be a little noisy if you are a light sleeper.

Room Tip: avoid the ground floor.

My husband and I enjoyed the 1950's-like feel of this privately-owned motel. We love that the current owner is the grandson of the first owner! Our room was very comfortable and clean. The view was less than we'd hoped for but that was totally due to the fog, NOT the room! The wall of windows facing the waterfront was quite stunning even if we saw more fog than we would have liked. We found the location to be ideal and it called to us to stroll down to the pier! We would definitely stay here again!

Stayed here on a number of occasions when visiting and it's always been a great experience. The location can't be beat. We can walk everywhere we want to go in the city and love the fantastic view from the balcony. The rooms are clean and comfortable and having a fully stocked kitchenette is a great bonus. We'll be back.

Good value motel right on Dallas road - seriously, what a view!
Large rooms, comfy beds. Senior's rates! Kitchenettes. Drift back to the early 60's......
Very friendly helpful staff.
Downside: bit noisy being on a main thoroughfare. Also, walls are pretty thin.

Room Tip: Top floor end rooms are great but have poor wifi connectivity.

I have stayed here several times over the years, and I always look forward to it. The rooms are absolutely spotless, and of course the view is stunning. Though it's very pleasant to stay in the summer when the weather is fine, the off season is really my favourite. During our recent stay, we awoke one morning to thick fog roiling outside our window and the sound of foghorns out in the strait. It's wonderful to be able to keep an eye on the ocean at all times and be so close to some of the beautiful seaside walking paths Victoria offers. The rooms are well appointed, comfortable and quite spacious, complete with a glamorous pink bathroom. Staff are lovely and unfailingly helpful. True enough, the bus does go by the front of the hotel and it is a few minutes' walk to downtown, but if you love the ocean and value a small, old-style motel, this is the place for you.

Room Tip: Room 307 is really special - on the end of the building, top floor.

We stayed for two nights on the top floor corner right near the motel sign in a big room with a kingsize bed, a kitchenette with everything we could want to prepare a meal. The bathroom still has it's pink and black tiles but was spotless along with everything else. Yes, Dallas Rd is noisy with cars and buses, yes the windows and sliding doors probably need replacing but sit out on the balcony with a cold beer on a warm evening and you will forget all about those things. It's all about the location! We loved walking around James Bay, also easy walk into town and a supermarket. We walked the breakwater every morning and evening. The staff were all friendly and helpful. We had been on the road for 6 weeks and it was a very pleasant place to relax and unwind before the long flight home.
