Locals don't often get a chance (or have the need) to experience their hometown's many fine hotels or sights in the same way that tourists and visitors do. And why would they? But, as someone who was born, raised, and has lived in Victoria my whole life, it's a real treat when you uncover a hidden gem. The Oak Bay Beach Hotel is just such one gem.
My wife (also Victoria-born-and-raised) and I celebrated our four year anniversary but needed to be relatively close to home because of our baby girl being babysat overnight, and having visited the OBBH previously with some friends, wanted someplace (1) close (2) relatively affordable and (3) with a relaxing pool. As a frequent business traveler, I've stayed in enough hotels to notice the small things that set one hotel off from the rest. The OBBH excels in the little, nice touches, and neither of us were disappointed.
We kept our one-nighter on the affordable side by booking mid-week, and took advantage of the hotel's midweek special with $40 gift card (this essentially paid for half of dinner). The weekend rates are not for the budget conscious, but given the cleanliness of the hotel, the attention to detail, the stellar service, setting (ocean and mountain views), and convenience, it is worth the range of prices. The room (courtyard facing, fifth floor) was immaculately clean, the linen of the highest quality, and the robes came in handy for visits to the pool. My only minor, minor gripe is that the bathroom fan--which has to remain on for air circulation apparently--was somewhat noisy; we had to shut the bathroom door and swinging bathtub doors to muffle the sound.
Did I mention the pool? A warm, mineral swimming pool with direct views of the ocean; it's open 24 hours, too. The pub is wonderful, and the food solid. The fish and chips were not spectacular (overly dark batter on the fish), but solid and the beer and wine selection good. The service in the pub was likewise top notch. For breakfast, we opted for a croissant and coffee at Kate's Cafe. My only feedback on the cafe is that the patio is a bit bare, with perhaps slightly more comfortable seats being a suitable choice. Nevertheless, it was a pleasant place to sit, drink coffee, and read the paper. Finally, free underground parking and free WiFi is a nice touch.
Overall, my wife and I couldn't've been more pleased, would highly recommend this hotel, and will definitely return on our next in-town getaway!
