“Nice, quiet, Jennifer was very helpful, good location but slightly pricey for us Kiwis”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 9 September 2010

We arrived in Victoria a wee bit later than expected (i.e. 5pm for a day trip to Victoria from Vancouver) so decided to stay the night. The information centre found Fisher House B&B for us so decided to treat ourselves because the bland hotels were about $40 cheaper - probably a little pricey for us Kiwis. On greeting us, Jennifer was very lovely and helpful pointing out where everything was and what we might want to consider to occupy ourselves. The location was about 15mins walk from the Info Centre and in a nice quiet suburban street - perfect for catching up on sleep. I think there are only about 3-4rooms in the place and we didn't hear or see anyone that night so definitely a great place to relax. Room was pretty and comfortable. So not much to complain about apart from the weather the next day. Jennifer cooked a lovely breakfast which was a great start to the day.

This was by far the best place we stayed at during our road trip down the West Coast, including places that were more expensive! We loved it! We didn't think it was possible to find an affordable (450 plus tax for 4 nights, 3 adults), decent place in Victoria close to downtown. I would definitely book this over any of the chains on Douglas Street, some of which look a bit run down.

I used to live in Victoria so I know my way around, and so when Jen welcomed us on the first day and gave us all these sightseeing tips and a map, I knew she really was giving us the best information. She was very friendly and accommodating. We arrived early, but she let us drop off our luggage and they actually carried all our (heavy!) suitcases upstairs for us while we spent the afternoon downtown.

It's an easy 15-minute walk downtown, but I have to admit that we were sometimes too lazy in the evening to make it back there. James Bay is a nice area as well, with Fisherman's Wharf close to the B&B. This is close compared to the other places which are listed as "Victoria" on here but are actually in Sooke or elsewhere. A Thrifties groceries store is about a 5-10 minute walk from the house, which is very convenient.

My sister and I shared the room with the king size bed, while my mother got the little single room next to it. The rooms were small, but cozy, clean and nicely furnished. The king sized bed was huge and incredibly comfortable. I actually dozed off in the afternoon on our first day. The TV was tiny, but we didn't go to Victoria to watch TV so this didn't matter. The bathroom was in the hallway, but it was our private bathroom.

The best thing about this place, however, was definitely the breakfast. You have to be there at 8.30 sharp and you're at one table with the other guests, so it's definitely an intimate feel which may not be to everyone's taste. But we liked this, as we had some interesting discussions with the other guests which sometimes lasted 1.5 hours. We didn't feel rushed out of the dining room at all during this time.

The breakfast itself was amazing! Jen was very creative with the recipes, and so we got banana-walnut pancakes one day, a zucchini-omlet thing the next, and a bread pudding on another day. This all came with a fruit bowl with a bit of yoghurt on it. It tasted amazing and was definitely enough to fill us up for the morning. The orange juice and coffee were served in nice cups and glasses. Overall, the dining room had an elegant, historic look to it.

The only small disadvantage was that the free wireless internet wasn't working on my laptop. My laptop is Canadian, so it can't be the fact that it's European which Jen suggested. She also said they'd had some problems before with European computers, so if you're desperate to use the internet, I probably wouldn't rely on it. However, Jen's husband (I've forgotten his name) offered to let me print off the ferry ticket on his own computer, so they definitely tried to accommodate us anyway. (Turns out that you don't need the ticket, only the confirmation number.)

So in conclusion, the B&B feels like a pretty intimate place, but very nice and we LOVED the breakfast!

Jen and Cal were warm, inviting and made our stay extremely pleasant. Breakfast was divine, the house was quiet and the rooms cozy. Both were knowledgeable about the area and were helpful in planning our activities and always willing to help.

We stayed just 1 night for our 20th Anniversary and wish we could have stayed longer. The location is really nice, as it's close to Beacon Hill Park and not a far walk from Inner Harbor. However, I'd bring decent shoes to walk in because if you plan on walking Victoria's downtown you will need them. Buses were convenient and so were bicycle taxis. Cal made our stay very comfortable and even offered to have breakfast a bit later than normal for us, as we only had 1 day to venture the city and were out quite late. Can't wait to come back.

Jennifer will look after your every need. We arrived with wine and cheese in hand. She took one look at our grocery bags and immediately offered to set the table for us. She brought out wine glasses, plates, cheese board and cutlery. Then she suggested places to eat for dinner. After a wonderful night in a very comfy king-sized bed we went down to a scrumptious breakfast. I wish we could have stayed longer.

Thanks to other positive reviews, we decided to stay at The Fisher House for two nights in mid-July. It's walkable from the dock (we arrived on the Victoria Clipper from Seattle) and easy to locate. We got in around 11, which was much earlier than the regular check-in time, but Jennifer warmly welcomed us and showed us our room. Before that, she recommended a few places for lunch and dinner and went out of her way to share bus information to Butchart Garden. (We ended up using Cruise Victoria, which included round trip and the ticket for 50CND or so).

We had a patio, but the weather was too cold for us to sit outside comfortably, but if we were dressed more according to the weather, we definitely would have taken more advantage of the patio. Jennifer has a list of restaurants that deliver to the B&B and there was a wine shop just a few blocks away from the B&B, so a relaxing evening on the patio is possible!

The bathroom was spacious, clean, and functional. We loved that a recycling bin was available--it showed that Jennifer cared for the environment. We forgot to bring our own lotion, but that worry was taken away when we saw little packages of Vaseline lotion. It's quiet dry in Victoria, so we were glad that the lotion was available for us!

We were really lucky regarding other guests. They were very friendly and courteous, so when they came home late at night, they were quiet when they had to use the shared bathroom that was next to our room (we had a private bathroom, but there are rooms that do not). These couples had great stories to share with us over breakfast, which was tasty. One morning, Jennifer made blueberry pancakes with a side of sausages, and another morning, she made bread pudding with a side of sausages. On both mornings, she served cut-up fruits with yogurt and granola. They were super duper delicious!

If we visit Victoria again, we will definitely stay at The Fisher House! For those trying to decide on a good B&B that you won't regret, I would strongly recommend The Fisher House.

We stayed just the night, but it was exactly what we were looking for. Quiet room, close to what we wanted to see and an excellent breakfast. The host was very helpful with suggestions. The good weather was a bonus.
