“Grand Pacific was delightful”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 9 July 2010

We stayed for one night, at a very good rate due to TravelZoo special. The service was fabulous, location couldn't be better, had a great workout/pool area. The parking was reasonable, the breakfast was fresh and delicious. The only complaint is the restaurant the concierge suggested was not good. It was not at the hotel, Cafe Brio but otherwise would recommend hotel highly.

While the hotels grand lobby and main entrance are quite spectacular things change upstairs. My confusion started when I asked the front desk for a one bedroom suit and was given a regular room. It was a "full view" room even though the window is no more than three feet wide. The old tv and lack of wireless in the hotel room makes us feel that we were taken for a ride. As tourists in our own we will not be recommending this hotel until it joins the 21st century. By the way, we wrote this while waiting 45 minutes for a couple sandwiches in our room attacked to the wall by a cable cord (will not surprise me if this shows up on my bill later).

Dear Guests,

Thank-you for your kind comments about the hotel's port cochére and lobby.

Regretfully, I am not able to determine why you were not checked into a suite. The Front Desk would have been more than pleased to rectify the situation had you informed them that you were unhappy with your guestroom.

Replacing our CRT televisions is on the top of our list of priorities as is wireless internet. Like most hotels in Victoria, we are gradually purchasing flat panel televisions with a projected completion date of first quarter 2012. We anticipate that all guestrooms will have wireless internet in early 2011. As you may know, complimentary "hard" wired internet is available in all of our guestrooms and wireless internet is available both in our public spaces and in our function rooms.

Lastly, we wil review our delivery time for our In-Room Dining guests.

Thank-you very much for the feedback and for your interest in the Hotel Grand Pacific.

Kind regards,

Reid James

We stayed at the Grand Pacific Hotel for two nights the end of May. The hotel was nice but I'm not sure I would rate it as a 5-star but more so a 3-star hotel. Yes, the rooms were clean as others have commented but they were very small and crowded. The two items that concerned us were the charge for parking - $15 a day at a hotel as a paying guest which we were not notified about and the fact that the concierge we dealt with was terrible. We asked for restaurant recommendations and she of course, gave us some but didn't bother to tell us that all of them required reservations. So we spent about an hour walking around one evening going to each of the 8 to 10 places she recommended and we couldn't get in to any of them. All the literature we later found mentioning these restuarants all stated that you would likely need reservations. The next day we called and asked the concierge to make reservations for us. She told us the restaurant was not open but she would make our reservations and then notify us of the time. She never did that. For a hotel that claims to be 5-star, it would see the concierge service would be much better. The plus of this hotel is that it was in a great location and within walking distance from several restaurants, etc. For the price of the room, I'm just not sure I would stay here again considering all the other hotels that are close by that I am sure have clean room as well.

Stayed in this hotel for only one night, but found that it was just a littel walk from the bus station, shops and overlooking the Inner Harbour. What more could we want? The bedrooms were good and breakfast was a buffet with plenty to choose from. Would stay there again if we were in Victoria.

Just got back from staying at the Hotel Grand Pacific! We loved it!
Pros:
1. Literally, righ across the street from ferry dock, so, easy for walking passengers.
2. Gorgeous, fine, upscale hotel and service. Very impressive. As we checked in, they gave my kids a 'welcome' packet with coloring book, list of things to do and a bathtime ducky! They loved it and remember it vividly and they are only 3!
3. They were very accomodating....keeping my daughters medication refrigerated and my ice pack frozen. Staff was so gracious! They also kept our bags after check out so, we could explore freely before ferry picked us up.
4. Beautiful deck that you could sit out on and see the water. i loved it and so did my children.
Cons (I am reaching here):
1. We had breakfast at the restaurant and the service wasn't that great. They were really slow and didn't refill drinks, etc.
2. The high tea recommendation...was disappointing. We were told to go to James Bay Tea House and it was alright. Staff just didn't point out that this is the working class style high tea. We wanted the all out fancy high tea and didn't really care for the James Bay.

This was a first time stay at this hotel. Very large hotel in an excellent location. Rooms are very dated. Did not seem they updated since it was built, very 80s. Peach and green decor. Yuk. Staff are great. Very pleasant and helpful. Old style TV in the rooms. Big amour with old style tv. Limited channels. Updated movies availble. Pool and workout room great. Bathroom sucked. There was no fan in the bathroom so it tended to keep the room a little warm and steamy until it cleared up. Disliked that a lot. The Mark restaurant was very disappointing. Called a 4 star restaurant, but prices reflected 5 star. Had french onion soup in a bowl so small it was difficult to eat from, especially with the oversized spoon. Messy. Presentation was extremely poor. Service was okay, but they didnt seem to be able to handle a large group with other customers. I would say this hotel is more like a 3.5 star rating. Not bad - but not great for the $$$.

Dear Guest(s),

From your description of the peach and green colour schemes in your guestroom you were staying in the original building or east tower of the Hotel. A second tower adding 160 guestrooms was opened in 2001. I agree with your guestroom comments.

For your information, the Hotel is commencing a program to replace our existing televisions with flat panel sets this summer and into 2011. As well, the Hotel will commence an east wing bathroom upgrade this fall and will continue this thru 2011 as well.

Your comment about the lack of a bathroom fan is perplexing. All bathrooms in the Hotel have fans but it may be that the fan in your guestroom was not working. I am looking into this possiblity.

I am very sorry that you did not enjoy your dinner in The Mark. The Mark is one of only two AAA Four Diamond restaurants in downtown Victoria and we take great pride in our food, beverage, and service is this room. Saying all that, I will review your comments with my team and continue to strive for perfection.

Your comments are appreciated and helpful.

Finally, thank-you for your interest in the Hotel Grand Pacific

Kind regards,

Reid James
