“Mice, Mice, Mice”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 25 September 2006

This property has mice. Be advised. My family and I were very excited for our stay at the SWANS after having read all the glowing reviews. We were in 3 different suites in this hotel and all 3 had mice. The hotel staff was very nice about the issue and did not charge us for the night. The day manager told me that they had called someone to resolve the issue. But before you spend the money to stay at this hotel, be forewarned. The night definitely put a little damper on our time in Victoria. We moved to the Harbour Inn & Suites and ended up saving ourselves over $100 per night and slept a little more comfortably.

We stayed for five nights in a studio suite on the first floor.
Despite being directly above the bar, we didn't hear a thing even when the bar was busy with bands on stage.

The room was well appointed with Juliet balcony, huge bed, good sized kitchen and a lovely bathroom complete with fluffy bathrobes.
Our welcome pack included free tasters from the brew pub below which we can heartily recommend for both food and drink.
The continental breakfasts were a little small but there was a large breakfast menu available in the same restaurant with most dishes a reasonable price.
The location was great for exploring with the only downside being large number of homeless people in the surrounding area. This wasn't a problem for us but lone travellers may find it a little unnerving, especially at night. This did seem to be a widespread problem across the area and was not limited to around the hotel.
All of the staff were very friendly, pleasant and happy to help.

We would definitely stay here again.

  • Liked — The room, brewpub and general atmosphere
  • Disliked — Room was a bit dark.
  • Tips/Secrets — John's Place further up on Pandora.

Overall, not a bad stay (especially for the rate that we booked at). The staff was helpful & pleasant, the rooms were clean & nicely appointed. Very central location and within walking distance.

A few downsides however:
1.) We were in a suite that was on the 3rd floor and faced the front of the building. The noise from the pub downstairs (including the live music) was incredible. Very very loud. The band sounded like they were right in our room.
2.) We could very clearly hear EVERYTHING happening in the adjoining suites (yes, EVERYTHING.). I personally find that a little gross (and annoying at 4am).
3.) The hot water ran out VERY quickly. Each suite has its own small hot water tank. Be first in the shower or be prepared for a cold wash ;)
4.) The continental breakfast included is a little skimpy. The croissants were absolutely fabulous but by the 3rd day, I was ready for a hot meal instead of the yogurt & bannana.
5.) The parking lot for our car was down the street and around the corner (and not in the best part of town). When we went to pull our car out upon departure the seagulls had bombed it beyond recognition. Two runs through the car wash & it was still a disaster.

  • Liked — Character of the hotel - very unique & great art throughout the hotel
  • Disliked — Noisy rooms & no privacy
  • Tips/Secrets — Try to book a room as far as possible from the pub downstairs.

WOW! Does an overnight stay get any better? The Swan had plenty to offer our family (parents in their 70's, my husband and I (45), and two teens (15 and 13). We stayed one night in a two bedroom suite. As a regular suite stayer – this is definitely the best! The accommodations were luxurious – large living room, fluffy pillows, dreamy bed, comfortable sofa and chairs, fully stocked kitchen, spa robes, upscale shampoo, etc. The staff had even stocked the room with a bottle of champagne to celebrate my parent’s 50th wedding anniversary.

The location was great for our family. We felt it was centrally located for tourists on foot. We could easily walk to restaurants, shopping, and downtown attractions.

The Swan Suite Hotel is definitely worth a serious look. Our only suggestion is to close the windows at night so you are not serenaded all night by the boisterous seagulls. Further, other reviews mentioned the proximity of the homeless. As with any big city, unfortunately homeless people are common. We were able to talk, joke, and laugh with a few of the friendly street people. This was not a deterrent for us.

I am always a bit nervous staying in a new hotel, but the Swan was perfect in every way.

We stayed two separate nights on our way to and from Tofino. The rooms were great and the staff very accommodating and helpful. We were upgraded to a one bedroom one night. We had to leave early in the morning, so the staff delivered the continental breakfast the night before straight to the fridge while we were out at dinner. The king bed was oh so comfy. The pub beer and food was great. Yes the homeless shelter is nearby, but there were no hassles. The location is in between the inner harbor and China town and easy walking distance to both. When we get back we’ll book it for sure.

We travel extensivly all over the world and our experience in Victoria at Swans hotel, the brewpub & Wild Saffron Bistro was by far the best place we have ever stayed at. 5 star all the way, the friendly service, the most unique suites with all original artwork not only in the suites but everwhere throughout this historical building. When in Victoria Swans is the only place we will ever stay and we can not wait to come back again ! Thank you Swans for the memories !

We stayed at Swans in early September, still summer.

This is a nice looking place with great hanging basket displays. The loft-style room was smart and we liked the bar and restaurant. The beer could certainly pack a punch!

The staff were nice and polite, the housekeeping standard really good.

The weather was hot and we couldn't sleep with the window shut. However there was a lot of noise from the street outside, which continued well into the early morning. There was a ceiling fan but that too was noisy and didn't really have much effect anyway.

Nice place, shame about the noise outside though.
