We took our vehicle on the Black Ball from Port Angeles to Victoria. If you have never done this before, DO invest some effort in doing a little research to make your trip more pleasant. It is important to know what to expect so your travels will run smoothly. I suggest calling them directly to ask questions -they are very helpful, AND do make a reservation. It costs a little extra for a reservation but you may find it worthwhile if you are pressed for time. You can make the reservation on the phone and use a credit card.
Personally, I enjoy ferries. Even though I am extremely prone to motion sickness. We have done this ferry ride several times- all with vehicles, and also from Victoria to mainland Vancouver. If the weather is nice you will enjoy sitting outside (very windy) and catching some rays and watching the waves. I think it is a great bang for the buck.
DO keep in mind that you need to take customs seriously. On our last trip, we exited the ferry in downtown Victoria and the customs agent was very serious and kind of loudly said to us "What are YOU doing in Canada?" It woke us up!! We've had a lot of laughs about it since. Going through customs back into the U.S. is, surprisingly, very easy.
I can't offer any advice on ferry traveling by foot, and not vehicle.
Drinks and snacks are available on board. Plenty of bathrooms. Safe.
Happy Travels!!

We took the ferry from Victoria to Port Angeles on a VERY rainy morning. When we drove in we paid and were directed to go to a certain lane. We then sat in our car waiting for the border agent to come and inspect the car. After about 20 minutes he arrived and told us that before he could inspect we needed to walk up to another area and provide our passports. When we got to the other area the man asked if we'd been inspected yet and when we said that we were told to go to the passport area first, he said that was wrong, go back to your car. So we did, the agent came with us, checked us out, then had my husband walk back again to the passport area to finish the process. This wouldn't have been so bad if they had told us exactly what to do, in what order when we were checking in! But instead we had to do a lot of walking in the VERY heavy rain and ended up getting quite wet! The ferry ride itself was fine, but the check in process could definitely be run a little smoother!

Well run ferry service to and from Vancouver Island. A bit expensive but the only realistic way to get from the mainland to Victoria.

A very pleasant 2 and a half hour ride through mostly smooth waters. Thought they could have offered a senior discount like the company that ran from Anacortes to Sydney. Food was varied, fairly priced, and tasty.
