“What service!”
Reviewed 2 February 2009

We pulled in out front of the hotel where there was people to help us unload and valet our car. Our check in was fast the hotel nice but under some construction although we never heard any noise. We were helped up to our room and what a surprize we were given a complementary upgrade. The room was neat and tidy and worked out great since we were travelling with a little one. My one problem the dryer died on me, but I'm sure if I had called someone the would have rushed me over a new one, I just left a note. Great stay!

I recently stayed at the Best Western Carlton Plaza. Overall, it was a very pleasant stay, the staff was very helpful. Facilities were above-average for this type/price-range of hotel, in my experience.
It has a very convenient location, also.

The one negative aspect was the noise from the Prism nightclub (ground floor) on Saturday night, but it wasn't too bad. I think the many positives out-trump this aspect

I would stay here again

We were disappointed. The location seems to be a problem
at night as it is just blocks away from a Homeless Shelter so
the night we stayed there we were approached by people on the street and saw many people being arrested by the police just around the block from the hotel and on several other blocks around the hotel.
(Maybe it's because it is so close to city hall). The hotel itself was nice inside, The room was rather small with small windows.
but there was no parking nearby. Valets parked your car so you'd have to ask for your car when you needed it. It is within walking distance to most places in Victoria that you'd want to see, but
I think we'd pay the extra to stay at the Harbour Inn Best Western
next time. The room we stayed in at the Carlton Plaza was right above a night club and had a view of the city but you could
hear everything going on below until 3 am in the morning. I think there are only 3 rooms that might be affected by this, but it didn't help our opinion of the hotel. The snack machines were completely empty so we went out looking for something to eat, walking so we didn't have to get our car.(It wasn't late but about 8:00. It seems to not be a good area after dark. We didn't want to stay in our hotel all night but after the experience on the street we went back anyway stayed there. I'm not sure what the hotel could do to make things better, but if you do go don't take room 522,23 24 etc.

We went there to celebrate our 29th wedding anniversary by ourselves and had never been to Victoria before. So it was disappointing to us that we couldn't go out at night and see the city because of the location of the hotel and happenings around it. The city of Victoria is worth the visit, just had a bad
experience with the hotel. If we do go back to Victoria it'll be with our young kids so then again we wouldn't choose this hotel as we'd not want to go out after dark at this location with our kids.
The front desk people were very nice and helpful, but there's not much they could do about the surroundings. We did tell them about the room experience. We were hoping they would have the option of a contential breakfast but this one does not. It does have a resteraunt on site, but it can get pricey.

  • Liked — The staff were friendly
  • Disliked — The location and sense of security, the noises around the hotel, small room, no place to get snacks in the hotel

I would like to thank the reviewer for their feedback regarding our hotel.

Indeed Victoria, like many other cities is faced with a homeless problem. There are a couple of homeless shelters downtown but they are not in the immediate vicinity of the hotel. One is located near Chinatown and the other is on Pandora Avenue near Quadra Street.

While homelessness can come as a shock to some who are not used to it in their own town, local Victorians have become used to the homeless in the city. The homeless may very well approach you for spare change or to bum a cigarette but generally speaking our downtown is very safe and the homeless will not harm you.

The police are very diligent about monitoring and arresting homeless who become involved in drugs or rowdy drunks from the downtown bars. The hotel's proximity to City Hall and Centennial Square is one of the reasons why many homeless pass near our hotel as they like to congregate on the lawn beside City Hall.

Being a hotel right in the heart of downtown and near night clubs, we do face the typical downtown issues such as noise and homelessness but the convenience of our location, clean rooms and friendly staff should compensate for what happens externally.

There are certain sides of the hotel that are more prone to downtown noise than others but there are also rooms on upper floors and the back side of the building that are very quiet and comfortable for those guests who are a little more sensitive to noise.

After a busy weekend, our snack machines can be emptied very quickly particularly when we have visiting sports teams in the hotel but our bellman are always happy to make a trip to the 7/11 to pick up a snack for our guests should they feel uncomfortable leaving the hotel themselves.

I am very sorry that our location and external issues in Victoria's downtown core created a bad experience for these guests. Although we cannot control what happens outside of our hotel, we aim to create a comfortable and pleasant environment inside the hotel.

We will be offering these guests a certificate for a free night stay to give them another opportunity to celebrate their anniversary under more plesant circumstances and to show them the Carlton Plaza's truly good side.

This is a comfortable hotel, reasonably priced and centrally located in downtown Victoria. Valet parking is inexpensive and you can leave your car and walk to the harbour, many venues and fine restaurants.

I stay at this hotel for 2 nights every 2 weeks for work. Without exception I am always greeted with smiles and welcomes from the entire staff. I chose this hotel after trying others in the area and finding this one to be above the norm for cleanliness and friendliness of the staff.
It is within walking distance of downtown Victoria and many restaurants are close by. It does have a restaurant for breakfast and lunch but not for dinner.
Parking is Valet Parking but that is not a problem as you only have to give 15 min notice to get your car.
I would recommend this hotel highly to anyone wanting to stay in Victoria. Suites are available

I had expected a lot less when booking the Best Western Carlton but I was pleasantly surprised by it's location, rooms and service. We weren't on the inner harbour for a change but it was a good change as we were able to explore more areas of Victoria. Even though we were on the 2nd floor facing Johnson street, we never heard a peep from the goings-on of a Saturday night. The rooms were a good size with duvet covers instead of those thin hotel bed-spreads. We had a complimentary upgrade to a suite upon our arrival which was great! The people at the front desk were extremely nice and pleasant but not very helpful with the local bus (minor detail). I would definitely stay here again!

We spent two nights in Victoria on our family vacation and found the Carlton Plaza to be a good value with an excellent location for walking around the sites of the inner harbour of Victoria.

The room was oversized with a couch, kitchen and sitting space. Excellent for four people, including two teenagers.

The beds were comfortable and the front desk was very helpful and cheerful. They handle the parking situation (or lack of) well with courteous and prompt parking service.

Overall - a good stay in a great location. I also saw the previous review and our room had no noise issues.
