Perfect place for a reasonably priced accomodation, 2 blocks from the ferry.

We were for adults and I booked this hotel through Expedia... we booked a one bedroom suite and we got the 3rd night free. It was just superbe, the location was fabulous close to everything... hotel people just great, fantastic service... fresh apple free everyday. The suite had a Kitchenet and a closed bedroom and a hide away bed queen. In the room we had a choice of a double bed or two single. curteous people and friedly people at the hotel and desk. The room was very clean. Kitchen was full equiped and had a drip coffee pot contrary as what some people said and maybe the decor is not what is he most actual it was very nice and clean. I give this hotel a 10 on 10... if you don't expect to live in you appartement and go on visiting I say then you are on vacation. Plus free wireless internet and free shuttle to the bus depot.

We've stayed at the Royal Scot hotel twice and have enjoyed it both times. The location cuoldn't be better for those arriving via ferry - it's about a 1-2 minute walk from the dock to the hotel. The street the hotel is on is tree lined and peaceful, and there are some great dining options nearby. It's an easy walsk to the inner harbor - and although it takes 5-10 minutes to walk to the downtown area, you have a safe, beatiful walk along the harbor.

Out first visit (October 2006) was exceptional - we had a full kitchen in our suite, and although the room is dated, the amenities, comfort, and friendliness of the staff made us feel right at home. I agree that the hotel is dated - but it had so many neat little surprises like their little gift shop (that had groceries for our kitchen), the underground pool and games area, and the kilted staff, that it felt comfortable and fun. We were supposed to take a float plane onto Vancouver, but the morning of our departure we were fogged in. We told the front desk about our situation, and they held our luggage for us and even worked to get us a room for that night (at the same discounted ferry package rate) if it turned out we were stuck there. We ended up catching a late afternoon flight , but they were so helpful that we knew we'd be back.

Our second trip was just as nice, but the room was smaller (still a discounted rate). Considering the prices for the surrounding hotels (sure, the Empress is cheaper than you'd think, but the parking, additioanl fees, and *tiny* rooms make it not as good of a bargain), this is a great deal. The staff were just as pleasant, and even gave us some complimentary bottles of water as we left. We also appreciated the little computer center where we could check in for our flight and print boarding passes. We found it comfortable and met our needs both times, but if you're looking for 4 stars and modern decor, this place is not for you.

We stayed here for a night at the tail end of a Thanksgiving Break trip to Seattle, Washington. After taking the ferry up to Victoria (during which we had to turn around halfway through due to a medical emergency, so the trip took about 2 hours than necessary), we found it relatively quick and easy to find the Royal Scot Suite hotel, which is tucked a couple blocks from the harbor behind a few larger hotels.

The hotel layout, decor, and room furnishings and amenities were fine... nothing to write home about. About on par with some of the lower-end Best Westerns (I've stayed in some great Best Westerns and some average ones; the Royal Scot is more like the "average" ones)

We dropped off our bags (since we could not yet check in to the room) and they were professional and accommodating with that process.

There was, however, a problem that was somewhat disappointing when we returned later in the day to check in. We specifically requested a non-smoking room, and when we arrived at the non-smoking room, it smelled pretty strongly of smoke (even though it was, indeed, designated as "non-smoking") When we requested a different room at the front desk, they insisted it was a non-smoking room and acted like we were crazy for being able to smell the smoke. This, I feel, was a bit unwarranted and unprofessional. They did end up switching our room; the second room did not smell like smoke at all. Perhaps hotels, instead of getting mad at people who do not like non-smoking rooms to reek of smoke, should be harshly punishing the smokers who get such rooms and then proceed to violate the non-smoking policy. Oh, and by the way... spraying some deodorant perfume in a room that has been inundated with smoke does NOT make the smoke smell go away... it simply blends with it and tries (unsuccessfully) to disguise it.

The location was not bad, since it was right there near the harbor and Parliament (no views of anything interesting from the hotel, however, since larger hotels block the harbor across the street.) However, after walking back and forth to downtown and Government Street so many times, we realized it would have been much more ideal to stay somewhere like The Empress, which is also close to Parliament and the Harbor, but is much closer to Government Street and all of the points of interest over there. At the time, I thought The Empress was out of our budget range, but as it turns out we could have stayed at The Empress for about the same price if we had simply booked a package deal through the Clipper ferry when we bought our tickets.

So, in the end, I would recommend this hotel under one condition: there are no other centrally-located hotels that fit your budget.

* The location is okay -- but not as close to Government Street as you may like
* The amenities and furniture are fine, but very basic (for example, even the coffee in the rooms is a Folger's-like instant coffee.)
* The pricetag is reasonable and may likely fit your budget, but many times you may be able to find a better place in the same range (for us, we could have done The Empress for about $10 more, and it would have been a much better experience)

  • Liked — price, proximity to harbor
  • Disliked — smoke in non-smoking rooms, distance from Government Street

The main things that attracted us to this hotel were location and reputation according to reviews on Trip Advisor. We read about the old fashioned style decor and didn't think this would be much of an issue, believing this to mean more homely than the sterile style of business hotels. However we have been so disappointed with our experience that we're checking out after one night losing money accordingly because it's really not what we look for in a hotel.

The first poor experience was just before entering the room. Smell of raw sewage in the corridor. This slowly penetrated our room making it unbearable. The hotel had had a problem which they were fixing.

On entering the room we were very taken aback by the standard of decor. It was not just dated but gave the impression of old and dusty even though it was not obviously 'old' furniture. There's date meaning something that would have been fashionable at some point in history. But the decor in our room looks like it would never have been in fashion.

The Hotel obviously attempts to offer the conveniences of other North American hotels but fails in our opinion. For example, coffee is offered in the kitchen but it's not a drip coffee pocket with a coffee machine, so much as an unknown brand of instant coffee. The rest of the hotel room was equally disappointing.

We were surprised that internet was $10/night when many hotels offer this for free. The suite we booked was somewhat spacious if it wasn't for the slightly wacky layout and ample amount of ancient furniture. We were expecting to be pleasantly surprised, where in fact we were just 'surprised'. Ambience was like we're in a movie set from a 50s film. I actually feel the need to smoke a pipe and have my kids sitting at my feet while playing with wooden toys while I gently pat their heads.

On the plus side, the hotel is in a pleasant area with many other hotels and certainly feels more quiet than you'd expect for its location. Clearly noises from the inner harbour can be heard but with no view of the harbour, guests are unlikely to suffer some of the negatives of having an active floatplane airport very nearby.

Our overall experience at the Royal Scot was like we'd checked into residential accommodation in a communist country, not a quite expensive hotel in a bussling city in the West. We found other hotels in the area superior and better value and would strongly recommend that people considering staying here check out guest photos which do accurately capture the ambience of the style of this hotel, prior to booking. If you get a chance, view rooms in person before committing. Location is good but if the style of the hotel is a big part of the experience, as it is for us, it could be a show stopper and we believe you can do better elsewhere.

We will look at reviews a lot more closely in future as this was the number 1 rated hotel in the area at the time of booking. While not the worst, we don't really see how it could rate so highly, but each to their own.

We stayed at the Royal Scot for 2 nights and were very impressed. We had reserved a king bed room with a balcony, but found out that the room reserved for us did not comply. The front desk gave us an option of upgrading to a king bed suite with a balcony for the same price. The suite was very impressive. We had a problem connecting to the high speed (not wireless) internet so the Royal Scot cancelled the $9.95 per day charge. We were surprised to learn that parking on site is $4 per day. This suite hotel has no air conditioning. The pool and exercise room were very nice. The hotel is a short walk from the inner harbour and all the main downtown sites. We loved the waffle bathrobes but found that they were a bit expensive to purchase in the gift shop. Overall, the facilities were very nice and the price was reasonable for downtown Victoria. We would definitely stay here again.
