We're not the first couple to "discover" the James Bay Inn, but for all who who go there for the first time it feels like unearthing a forgotten treasure. Built in 1911 but recently fully redecorated while retaining its Edwardian heritage, this modest, unpretentious inn is everything it sets out to be, and does it for bargain prices in the off season. And who knew that Emily Carr died there in 1945? Or that the room in which she died, is now the men's room off the pub?! She would have died laughing if she'd known. I give it five stars not because it boasts all the amenities which no one ever uses like swimming pools, spas and weight rooms (like, hello! who goes to Victoria for weight-training?!) but because it is exactly what you want from Victoria: living history, comfort (people actually use the common area in the foyer), the personal touch, and a solid breakfast. And walking distance from everything downtown, while not being in downtown. It's also a short walk to Beacon Hill Park and the beachfront along Dallas Road. Our only request, and we make it on behalf of all menopausal women, is an option other than a heavy quilt for the bed. And it is surprising that the Inn does not make more of it's history, with information available in the foyer.

Room Tip: We were fortunate to book in the midweek in the off season, and to speak directly to the desk clerk...

This inn is always our favourite place to stay in Victoria. Apart from it's super convenient location, the hotel itself is charming, atmospheric and comfortable. The staff are helpful and friendly both at the front desk and in the housekeeping department. The JBI offers affordable, old school accommodation with a quality of character only time can create.

James Bay Hotel, may not be a modern hotel with flash rooms, but it was very clean, with good size bathroom. We stayed 3 nights. We each had a room with a queen sized bed. The room decor could be modernised, but there was nothing wrong with the bedding or the bathroom. And lets face it, that is what is important. Breakfasts were great, but did not think much of the dinner menus. However the staff in all parts of the hotel were great. Front desk was knowledgable, and we (two ladies in their 60s - 1 with a walking stick), got even more help. When we went to pick up our bags in the afternoon, to catch the bus/ferry back to Vancouver. We were planning to walk down to the bus station, but a staff member going off duty, offered to take us in his 4x4. Which we accepted. Wonderful service!!!

We recently stayed at the James Bay Inn for a girl's weekend. We chose it because of it's location on Government Street close to the Inner habour, but did not expect what we received. From the moment we stepped into the lobby, we knew we had found a great place to recharge. . The staff is friendly and knowledgeable about the area.

The Inn has a lobby filled with beautiful antiques. The rooms are simple, and clean, with comfortable beds. There are no coffee makers in the rooms, but there is a coffee tray in the lobby in the mornings. Throughout the day, there is fresh ice water available in the lobby as well. There is free WiFi in the rooms and a computer in the lobby for guest's use.

The restaurant on the lower level serves good food, with fairly large portions. There is also a Pub, that has darts.

The only downside to this Inn is that if you have mobility issues, there is a steep staircase to climb to get to the lobby. If this is not an issue for you, and you are looking for something that will allow you to walk around downtown Victoria, I definitely recommend this place.

St James Bay Inn and neither the newest nor the most fanciest hotel in Victoria - and many people already mentioned that it can be hard to carry your luggage to the third floor. We chose it for price and location and didn't regret it. You can easily walk to the inner harbour, parliament, museum, etc.. We had a room with two double beds which was quite large and very clean.
Our recommendation for breakfast: the parliament's restaurant.

I had to travel to Victoria for work and the budget was pretty tight. As a result I felt pretty constrained in choosing a hotel in Victoria. I have stayed at Paul's Motor Inn before, but found the room was completely saturated with cigarette smoke, and did not wish to take my chances there. I decided to give the James Bay Inn a try instead. I got a double room, facing the inner courtyard, for $89/night. The room was small, but fine for my needs (it had a desk and a small TV) and the bathroom was actually a fair size. The bed wasn't anything amazing, but was totally fine. The front desk staff were super friendly and I loved the heritage aspect of the hotel. It's also super close to downtown (10 minute walk). I experienced no problem with noise. I would definitely stay here again.

I chose the James Bay Inn because my usual place was booked. I was a bit disappointed. As someone else pointed out, it was very small, extremely basic...(no hairdryer, leaky shower, no water pressure in bathroom tap, paper thin walls...) and the place did have a general tired feeling to it. However, it is in an excellent location and it has a decent restaurant downstairs.

Room Tip: Good restaurant.
