“Sightseeing stay”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 13 August 2014

We stayed for 2 nights and found the standard of the hotel to be excellent in all aspects - room, decor, facilities and certainly service. The hotel is in an ideal location, close to the harbour and Government Street

I am pleasantly surprised by how well maintained this property is, as it looks as nice as it did when I came in its first year . The high quality of furnishing and bathroom products show it wants to be a top hotel in Victoria. Business centre and fitness room exude an air of elegance.

Extremely well appointed and comfortable hotel close to attractions and shopping. Excellent food and service at dinner but breakfast needs improvement. Would definitely recommend to others and stay again

Based on Trip Advisor ratings, I booked our stay at The Magnolia Hotel and Spa. We are not a fan of spa services so this review does not consider the quality of or experience at the spa.

During our last visit, we stayed a little out of the way at the Delta Victoria Ocean Pointe Resort and Spa, so this time we wanted to stay at a more central location. First, the location was convenient for us arriving on the Victoria Clipper from Seattle. It is also close by to the main tourist attractions such as the harbor, restaurant and shops, and convenient for catching public transportation to Hatley Castle and Butchart Gardens.

We arrived to the hotel at about 6:30PM, too late to go to the banks to get money exchanged. We are used to exchanging money at the hotels but the exchange rate they gave us was poor--right now it's about 100USD to 110CAD. But they were willing to only exchange it 1 to 1. I know we should have not taken this, but by this time we were tired and hungry so just wanted some cash quickly.

We booked a Superior double room as we were traveling with a friend and planning on sharing the room. We were given room 309, which was an average room with a bathroom at the side of the entry, opening up to the room with two queen sized beds. There was a decent sized desk to one side, plus a chair with an ottoman and side table. There was also a dresser drawer under the TV. Unfortunately, the decor of the room was basically non existent - they really should invest in a designer for their next remodel.

We knew we weren't getting a view (since we did not buy up) but were not expecting to overlook the dirty roof of part of the hotel, and an ugly parking lot across the street. It looks like others in similar rooms on the low floors have also complained of this. We just kept the drapes closed so as to not have to look at this.

They provided a glass bottle of water, a couple of apples and some chocolates. That was nice, but they only apparently provide this on the first night as we were expecting a new glass of water the second night, but we did not have one when we arrived back from our day outing. It sounds like you could ask them to replenish, but seems like they should at least provide new water each day. They did have a mini bar fridge that had some room for us to store our own drinks and a little bar sink which was convenient to have. But the brass sink drain looked really worn out and was in need of replacing.

The bed was comfortable enough, and there were plugs around the room for all of our iGadgets. The bathroom was stocked with nice Aveda products and had a separate shower from the tub.

I did ask for a couple of spoons from the front desk because the lackluster Starbucks employee did not put any spoons in my order. They promptly provided me the spoons so we could enjoy our oatmeals. Other than that, since we don't use concierge services, I can't speak to that, although everyone at the front seemed friendly enough and said "hello" or "welcome back". All in all, a nice enough place, but nothing memorable or special enough for the money we paid.

Dear Konnichiwawa

Thank you for your recent stay with The Magnolia. We appreciate your business and I thank you for taking the time to share your feedback.

I am pleased to hear the hotel location was very convenient for you, and that our staff were friendly and helpful during your visit. We appreciate these comments and are pleased to hear that they had a positive impact on your visit.

I wanted to offer my sincere apology that some areas of your stay did not measure up to your expectations. This is disappointing to hear and any stay which does not meet a guest expectations is always a concern to our team on how we can improve. I have reached out via private message and hope we can be in touch.

With respect to your room assignment, Superior Rooms are located between the 2nd and 5th floor of the hotel to all sides. August has been a very busy month in Victoria and I am very sorry that there were no other options for rooms on your day of stay.

Thank you again for your business with The Magnolia.
I hope we can be in touch further and welcome you back again with us,

Yours Truly,

Bill Lewis

A friendly, boutique hotel centrally located within walking distance of the Inner Harbour, shopping and Chinatown. All the staff were helpful and friendly. We do not stay at any other hotel but the Magnolia when visiting Victoria.

Stayed 2 nights in late July. Location is excellent, easy walk to everything. staff were very friendly and helped with questions and dinner reservations. charming atmosphere. Our room was very nice; diamond city view room. "city view" is not that impressive, but I knew that when I paid for it. if a view is really important to you, then you should pay for the harbor view.

I wouldn't say this place blew us away, but it delivered everything we wanted from a 4-star property at a fair price. Absolutely nothing went wrong, so I'm giving it a 5.

We changed our reservation from the Empress to the Magnolia to be with friends. The staff are absolutely the best. Great location, wonderful room, and it was a perfect experience. Really great. LMcNamara
