We are vegetarians, and the fare we were served was small and not at all filling. We felt cheated. The salad was plain iceberg lettuce, a few slivers of radishes, and a few plain, unmarinated cubes of tofu right out of the package, served with a non-descript dressing. Not tasty at all. The entree was small and unsatisfying and was not anything close to resembling a crepe as was listed on the menu. Very pricey for what we got: over $40 for two for a shared appy, a veggie main each, no drinks, no dessert, no tea/coffee. We would not go back. It needs a make-over.

My friend and I tried KULU's recently and enjoyed it very much. We started out with the steamed basil clams and the potsickers. I asked for a mix of the vege and pork potstickers. The sauce they were served with was delicious and tasty. The clams were tasty as well and came in a wonderful broth that you finished to the last drop. We both had the salmon castle for main course which was a salmon fillet on a bed of rice that was filled with all kinds of goodies and again was delicious. They had a nice selection of wine as well. The only thing we noticed was that the service was quite slow so if you were in a hurry to go to the Belfrey then you should come a good 2 hours ahead of the show time. But we were not in a hurray so the slower service didn't matter to us.

Kulu recently opened on Fernwood square opposite the Belfry theatre. Kulu features "Asian fusion", successfully combining elements of Japanese and Chinese cooking styles in dishes such as "P'rice Burger", which is a pork patty served on a kind of sticky rice puck, with kimchi, avocado, and soy cheese, and baked yam fries. It was both unusual and delicious, as were several starters we tried: pot stickers (crispy dumplings with Taiwanese-style sauce), and Pan-Fry Chicken Thigh. The latter might have been improved with a dipping sauce. The menu also offers two soups, two salads, and three other starters such as Edamame, and Sake Salmon. There are seven lunch entrees and five more dinner entrees including the popular Salmon Castle, which is a salmon fillet on minced salmon infused with rice served with Gekkeikan sake & teriyaki sauce. There are a couple of eel dishes -- BBQ Unagi and Unagi cake. Food and liquor prices are quite reasonable.
The decor is more refined than in previous cafes at this location, with comfortable seating and interesting paintings hung. There will probably be a few tables outdoors once winter ends.
