“Great vacation”
Reviewed 19 August 2014

Stayed last year at the Helm's Inn and enjoyed it, but this year managed to book earlier and got an upgraded room on the third floor of the main building (for anyone with mobility issues this could be a problem as they have no elevator). They also like to see repeat customers, so that may have helped out my cause. Came as a surprise how nice it was - large, remodeled nicely, quiet and the location can't be beat. I think most if not all of their rooms have stoves, microwaves and fridges which is a nice feature - I could eat in my room when I so chose. By heading out the back door and through the parking lot you find yourself at the rear of the Royal British Columbia Museum, so in other words a short 5 minute walk to the Inner Harbour. Another bonus is a laundry room off of the reception foyer. On my last day, kids were watching TV in a sitting area and adults were enjoying coffee, tea and cookies also in the foyer. Friendly staff from front desk to housekeeping. I look forward to returning!

Room Tip: Parking can be an issue even when you have a pass. Best times to find a spot are between checkout an...

The Helms Inn is very well located for the Victoria bound travel. Located at the end of the down town core one block off the harbour you can walk to most down town facilities and services. It is also right behind the Royal museum and IMAX centre which is a must visit. The hotel is very clean, well kept and the small suites are very comfortable and with the full kitchen allow for any food prep you may want. We found this hotel through book it.com and were very pleased with the hotel and the reasonable rates even in the summer high season.

Room Tip: 2nd or 3rd flors

The Helm's Inn is a very clean, very nice little hotel with an excellent location, and perfectly met our needs during a 2-night stay in Victoria. It is next door to the Royal BC Museum, and blocks away from the harbor and major sights. We loved that the furnishings were a bit funky - not your typical hotel decor. It was great to have a small fridge and microwave for heating up leftovers and keeping drinks cold.

For the most part, the room was quiet, although I am a light sleeper and was awakened by street noise (and seagulls) pretty early in the morning. We stayed in a room on the third floor in the Mount Royale building, which faced the parking lot of the museum. We did sleep with the windows open, as it was warm when we visited. The sitting room area had an A/C unit, which did a great job of cooling things off out there, but cool air did not really reach the bedroom. I requested a fan the second night, and the front desk was happy to give me one. Beds were comfortable.

All in all, a great choice for families, with a bit of extra room, easy access to the park across the street, and a stone's throw from the museum.

This hotel composed of 3 different buildings is conveniently located downtown. At first we had problems parking(there was no space left), we had to go inquire inside and seek help. Then we got the room, it was a corner room(206) on the parking side of the museum, the door was very hard to open, as we got in a foul smell met our noses, that room had not been ventilated for a while(after a day it finally dissipated.Nice and comfortable king size bed, but no space for anything else in the room, we could hardly walk around the bed and there was no space to put our luggage. The bathroom was clean but so small we had to sit on the toilet to close the door and get access to the sink and mirror. In the living room area the air conditioning unit blew cold air on the sofa witch was really uncomfortable, finally the modem and wires were falling from the back of the TV.Parking fees should be included in the price of the room and for the price a nice continental breakfast should be included. We also had noisy neighbors on the upper floor and in the room next door.

Pros: Excellent location, good budget pricing, small, intimate, nice quiet hotel.
Cons (depending on your point of view): No views, no hotel restaurant, meeting rooms or extensive services, no hustle & bustle.

Our challenge on this long weekend stay was to accommodate the needs of 7 family members (basically 3 couples) including one member who has mobility issues and all at a budget price. My wife and I had visited Victoria (staying outside of the city) some years ago and knew we wanted to stay near the Inner Harbour for accessibility and to see the sights. I am pleased to say that Helm's Inn did not disappoint. Fortunately, the family members (adults) we brought are also pretty independent travelers, so we were not looking for an extensive array of services from the hotel.
Helm's Inn provided rooms that were quiet, very comfortable and extremely well-kept, and the location is superb, just two city blocks from the Inner Harbour, one block from the Empress Hotel where some of us had tea, immediately next door to the Royal BC Provincial Museum, which we enjoyed very much, and also at the edge of the extensive and beautiful Beacon Hill Park. Helm's Inn is located on the edge of the hotel district that has built up at the Inner Harbour, but is quiet and while located at a busy intersection, did not seem to have the heavy tourist traffic of the main district about 4 blocks to the west. We made our reservations several months in advance and spoke to the owner about a room for limited mobility, and he reserved room 102 in the Parkside building, which had excellent access to the parking area, required only 3 steps up to enter and also had an fairly private outdoor patio. This was a roomy unit and we used it as our family gathering point. Having the kitchens in the units was great for our family as we breakfasted together each morning. Our 3 couples actually had units in each of the 3 buildings, but they are very close together so it was no inconvenience. One couple (us) specifically booked a suite (with a hide-a-bed in the lounge) which very well met the needs for ourselves and our adult daughter. Helm's Inn is located at the intersection of busy Douglas and Superior Streets, but our couple who had a room facing the street said that with their windows closed, they heard no traffic noise and slept well. We had a unit facing the back parking lot and kept our windows open, enjoying both the quiet (except for some seagull cries) and the beautiful Victoria weather.
Helm's Inn has good reviews and in our case it fully lived up to them, meeting our special needs.

Room Tip: The buildings are not much different from each other and are located very close together, so it real...

I have stayed at Helm's Inn countless times. If you drive by and don't know this place, you might feel it is outdated. That is where it ends. Checking in, you have friendly service but what I also appreciate is that the rooms are nicely decorated and you don't feel like you are in a standard hotel room. There is charm and character to this place.

What I also appreciate is that it is located in central Victoria and easy access to everything that is in the heart of downtown Victoria and Beacon Hill Park. Park your car and forget about it. There is also a nice lobby area to sit and unwind to have a cuppa. If you are coming by bus, it is very close to the bus station.

The helm's inn is staffed by some do the nicest most helpful Canadians I have met on my trip. The hotel is in a great location with very reasonable parking rates. A short walk and you are at the inner pier.
The room was very comfortable and had full kitchen facilities. Wifi is very good had no difficulties face timing home. I would highly recommend this hotel.
