My husband booked us into the Oswego in Victoria as a surprise for a three night stay for our 20th anniversary recently. After giving me the news, I almost immediately checked TripAdvisor for reviews and after reading a few, will admit that I didn't know what to expect. I can honestly say that I was very pleasantly surprised.
I expected a hotel which had perhaps had a stunning reputation a few years ago which was a little worn around the edges. A "grand dame", so to speak. What we got was a stunning, modern hotel experience.
We arrived in Victoria after two flights, found a taxi and went directly to the hotel. We arrived in late afternoon, and were immediately greeted at the front desk, and introduced to the concierge. All staff were welcoming and friendly, and the check-in experience was quick and efficient. We took the elevator up to the 7th floor, where we found the one-bedroom suite we had booked into had a lovely view of the harbour and mountains in the distance. The glass wall filled the room with light, and it was clean, modern and very, very comfortable. The bathroom was awesome, with an extra-deep tub and separate shower unit.
Everything was spotless.
There was a bowl of fruit on the countertop, and wine, bottled water, coffee and tea in the kitchen, and the stereo was on low, with soft music filling the suite. The bed was high, firm, and made up with lovely thick cotton sheets. The balcony opened off the glass wall of the bedroom, and held two chairs and a small table -- perfect for sipping a glass of wine in the evening before bed and watching the lights of the city come on, or a cup of tea in the early morning as the city awoke (both of which we indulged in and enjoyed thoroughly).
Soft cotton towelling robes were available in the bathroom for our use, and plenty of towels.
That first night, having traveled since early morning, we had no interest in leaving the hotel to explore. We dined in the bistro downstairs and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. Our server (Lindsay, if I remember correctly), was a lovely young lady who asked where we were from, an why we'd travelled to Victoria. When she found out it was our anniversary, she congratulated us, and couldn't have been more welcoming. She even took the time to write out a list of things she thought we might enjoy in the city, and suggested a fabulous sushi place, which we did try, and were very impressed with.
The meal we had that night was possibly the best meal I've eaten out, ever. We chose the chef's "Seasonal Table D'hote" and it was incredible! The food and quality of service made our first night in Victoria very memorable.
We ordered a room-service breakfast the next day and it, too, was wonderful. My husband chose the yogurt/fruit/granola cup, and I chose the continental plate -- there was so much food on this plate, I ended up putting half of it in the refrigerator for the following day. Prices were exceptionally reasonable.
We encountered the cleaning staff twice during our visit. Once when returning to our room in the late afternoon the following day, when the staff were there to tidy up (they do this twice a day, morning and late afternoon) and turn down our beds, making sure there were fresh jugs of herbed water on the bedside tables, and leaving small belgian chocolates on our pillows. The young lady was pleasant, apologized for being in our way, and when told we didn't mind and engaged in conversation, was friendly and quick about her work. The second encounter was when my husband had mistakenly left the "do not disturb" sign on the door, and the staff slipped a note under our door that they were unable to tidy the room, but we could call for service any time we wished. I opened the door quickly, and caught the three staff members in what appeared to be a disagreement (not enough to disturb us with the door closed, but obvious when I opened the door). The one young lady apologized profusely for "disturbing" us, and when I explained that the sign had been left on the door in error, and we'd like some fresh towels, they fell over themselves making sure we had everything we needed.
The daily newspaper at the door each morning was a nice touch, as well.
We left VERY early in the morning, as we had a flight out of Victoria at 7am, and the front desk effortlessly got us a cab, checked us out, thanked us for our business, and overall, were wonderful.
The ONLY complaint I could possibly have is that the duvet on the bed was not heavy enough, but that is a personal preference thing. DH and I prefer to sleep in a cool room with heavy bedding, rather than a warm room with light bedding and I'm absolutely certain that, had we said something to the front desk, they would have addressed, and solved, that "problem" for us.
This experience made our anniversary that much more special. This hotel is a lovely place to stay, in a pretty neighbourhood, with efficient and caring staff members. I have stayed in some very nice hotels, but this one, while perhaps not as big or as grand as some, feels like home. I cannot thank the staff enough -- it was lovely, and we will be back.
