“Great Experience”
Reviewed 19 October 2008

My girlfriend and I stayed at the Oswego four nights in early September, and thoroughly enjoyed it. We arrived at noon via the Clipper, and were able to check in early and we received an upgrade to a 1 bedroom suite without even asking.

The staff was very friendly and helpful, and the luggage storage was a lifesaver after we had checked out (we took a 7 pm sailing back to WA). I was especially impressed when we came to claim our bags and the front desk clerk told us we should wait to take our luggage and instead go to the restaurant, which was having a free wine tasting. Most hotels seem to be eager to get rid of you once check-out is complete, but the Oswego had the class to still treat us as guests.

The fully stocked kitchen was great, with modern, name brand appliances. The room was large enough for my tastes and the bathroom was gigantic, with a shower and a separate bathtub. My only complaint is the lack of air conditioning, as the room was overly toasty when we returned from sightseeing in the late afternoon. (Temperature was upper 70's F, and our room got the afternoon sun). Overall, great experience, and I would be glad to stay at the Oswego again, just maybe not on a really hot summer day.

We were looking for a beautiful, newer hotel to stay in on the occasion of our 20th anniversary. The Oswego looked perfect, and when we called to book it, we were offered a very good rate, considering the time of year. The hotel was easy to find from the ferry terminal and just a short walk away from the heart of downtown Victoria, which was a plus, since we didn't feel the need to get a car. When we arrived in our room, we were thrilled with the set up - very modern, stylish, new and lovely colors. We were also pleased to find a small card from the staff wishing us a happy anniversary. However, we experienced a plumbing problem right off the bat, due to no fault of our own...my husband flushed the toilet and it was apparent that there was a pre-existing clog. We called down to the front desk and we soon had a young man at our door, armed with a plunger. He went into the bathroom and went to work. Soon, however, it became apparent that the problem wouldn't be solved with a simple plunging. He continued to work behind the closed door and soon came out, muttering about needing to get a mop and bucket, as it had overflowed all over the floor. We were a little put off by this, and although he cleaned it up, we weren't comfortable with the actual "cleanliness" of his handiwork and asked to be moved to a different room. The extremely personable and helpful young woman who had booked our stay was happy to accommodate us and we were soon in a different room. She showed us how to work the incredibly complicated TV and apologized for the inconvenience. A couple of things we didn't care for: the rooms weren't really very clean...noticed the remains of a previous guest's pink lipstick or perhaps nail polish on the floor and just a general lack of attention to detail, which was disappointing in such a new hotel. Additionally, there was a noise outside our window both nights (cars racing up the streets a couple of times and people talking loudly), as well as a streetlight directly outside our window which shined into our room all night, despite our best efforts to block it out while leaving the windows open due to the heat and lack of air conditioning. But it is a very lovely hotel and one we'd seek out again if we had occasion to visit Victoria in the future.

Brand new, well situated, we had a 2 bedrooms appartment (2 adults and 3 kids) very nice and clean with 2 bathrooms, full kitchen. A nice view, very good breakfast (far above average ) with fresh fruits, and everything you need. A very nice place, the best we had in our 3 weeks tour in BC.

This very contemporary boutique hotel is actually a strata. (Not an expression we are used to in the States- we call them time-shares.) Each of their units is actually owned by an individual. The hotel did the decorating and furnishings, as well as managing and maintaining them. That might be why there is some uneven reviews. We were lucky to be upgraded to a two bedroom suite on the top (10th) floor. The terrace was huge and had a great view of the harbour. The second bedroom had a small terrace but it over looked the Parliament buildings which were beautiful at night. The living room is small and has the couch positioned a little too close to the large screen TV for comfortable viewing. And the TV (as mentioned in pervious reviews) does require reading the instructions prior to using it. The instructions are available in their in-room guide (RTFM!). (No different than ours at home with one remote for the TV, another for the cable, and a third for the DVD player.) The staff was professional and friendly, and very accommodating. This hotel does NOT have air conditioning, which is not normally needed, but this summer was the hottest summer they have had in years. Our room did have ceiling fans, but, I am uncertain if all the rooms have ceiling fans as this may be an upgrade that the suite's owners did on their own. So you may want to ask. We would definitely stay there again. It was great to have our own kitchen (which was fully stocked and very modern.) Though their web site does not say it, there is free wi-fi in the lobby, and wired Internet in the rooms. (A tip: buy and bring with you an Apple Airport Express WiFi base station. They're cheap, tiny, and will let you have wireless in your room!)

  • Liked — The beautiful terrace and view.
  • Disliked — No air conditioning.

We stayed at the Oswego 11 nites in Sept. This was our first trip to Victoria, and it was outstanding. Staying at the Oswego was important to the success of our trip. I cannot imagine staying at an "ordinary hotel" in such a unbelievable setting. For us, it was worth the extra cost to have a suite in a quieter area of downtown.
We arrived after supper, and our airport shuttle dropped us on the curb. Luckily the hotel staff came to our assistance, and got us to the lobby. We were greeted most warmly by the front desk staff. I appreciate the fact they looked us in the eye and cared that we were there, before they did the processing. I felt at home and welcome right away, especially with the help into the lobby.
No doubt about it, our 2 bedroom suite was wonderful. Luxury, lots of special touches, and stylish decor made us say wow. The suite was huge. Full size appliances including dishwasher, island sitting area in kitchen and dining area, three flat screen HD t.v's, queen beds with the thickest Serta mattresses I have ever seen and on and on......There is a master bedroom with huge window area, and full bath-tub and seperate full glass shower next to it. The 2 bathrooms are just luxurious in one word. I love, love, love the spa immenities. I could go on but I think it's worth seeing for oneself.
If you're going for a holiday, do yourself a favour and stay at one of the better hotels in Victoria. The huge window area in the living room allows you to appreciate the beauty of the city too. Get away from downtown, and enjoy the inner harbour area. Walking distance to the ocean, with a view that takes your breath away.--review by a Prairie Visitor.

We stayed here for 5 nights. Rooms are very stylish (dark wood, huge windows, chic technology, granite work surfaces). Beds are lumpy but look teriffic. There is a laundry room and a business centre. Breakfast is the usual cereal, fresh fruit, breads, etc. - all self-service and beautifully arranged. Set slightly away from the harbour, it is still in easy walking distance of shops, restaurants and the bustling little harbour. There is a restaurant - food is nouvelle cuisine, so a change from the usual large portions.

This hotel is overpriced and overrated. It is a decent enough hotel, with a decent enough location, a 10 min walk to the harbour area/downtown, and a 15 min walk to the nearest supermarket, through a pleasant residential area, but the rooms are on the small side, and ours wasn't cleaned the whole time we were there. We were upgraded to a two bedroom suite upon check in, it was decent enough, with big bedrooms, and big bathrooms, but the living area was very small, and the kitchen had no storage space for food (apart from the fridge), which is really bad if you want to self cater. The beds were small, and uncomfortable, and the tv was really confusing to work, and kept giving us east coast tv, french tv, or the shopping channels. The room was never hoovered, the bathrooms and kitchen were never cleaned, beyond what we ourselves did. The business suite was no more than a cupboard with a very old computer in, and the laundry facilites were too small and always being used by members of staff. The staff were pleasant enough and helpful, although we had to ask for maps etc. Don't believe the pictures on their website!!
