I had an extra day in Victoria, and decided to go whale watching. I chose Eagle Wing as they were highly rated, have a good environmental record, and seemed to be an all around great company.
It was fantastic! I was lucky enough to get on the smaller boat, so there were only 9 of us.
It was about an hour on open water to get to where a pod of Orcas was playing, and after watching them for a while, and listening to them on the hydrophone, Captain Dale asked if anyone was in a rush to get back. When we all said no, went went north and down through Active Pass and found another, smaller, group of Orcas who were all on their way to join the larger group we had just seen.
The sun was setting, the day was beautiful, and we were surrounded by these beautiful creatures jumping, splashing and flipper waving!
We ended up getting back to the dock an hour late, but it was totally worth it!
Captain Dale is a whale-whisperer! Wonderfully knowledgeable about all of the whales, their idiosyncrasies, their names, and where to find them. Eagle Wing also offers a "whale guarantee" - if you don't see any whales when you go out with them you get a lifetime pass to come back and travel with them until you do get to see some whales! A family from California was with us on the boat, they had been out the day before and not seen anything - lucky for them we found a whole pod on Saturday!
Overall - this was a fantastic experience - and worth every penny! :)
I don't think I can recommend Eagle Wing enough.
If you're heading out on the water - don't be fooled by how nice it is on land - wear layers, bring a jacket, gloves, wear pants, and bring sunglasses, water and snacks.
