Excellent food. The sticky toffee dessert is absolutely delicious.
Prices are high and with most Italian restaurants you must order your side dishes separately. If money is no object and you enjoy tasty food, then this is a great place.
Decor is a visual smorgasbord.

Thank you for the kind words but there is one misconception I feel I should correct. You do not order your vegetables separately at Brio. All dishes come with their own set of veg and every plate has a different set of veg. You may have been confused by the fact that there is a dish on the menu called Contorni. This is a mix of 4 different seasonal vegetables from our local organic suppliers, each one prepared in a different way. Along with several other items, it is tailored for vegetarians and is not meant to be something you must order with your meal if you want vegetables.
As for our prices, they are virtually identical to most of our competition. Our average customer spends about $52 which includes their drinks as well

When we arrived at Cafe Brio on the last evening of June - our dinner plans to that point were not turning out so well. Co-Owner Greg Hays turned that around in an instant!

We were in Victoria to visit family and had settled on a trendy pizzeria (that did not take reservations) in the Cook Street Village - a good 30 min walk from the condo we rented. Upon arrival, we were told a minimum 45 minute wait. That was not appealing. We tried other spots in the same area - with equally disappointing results. Discouraged, we began the long walk back, which passes by Cafe Brio. We assumed they would be booked. But I decided to take a chance and walked in hopefully...Greg greeted us and when asked if they could seat a party of 7, without reservations, he didn't even hesitate. He just wanted to know if we minded waiting just a few minutes for them to set up a table, and whether we were fine not having a rushed meal. Fantastic! We were seated 5 min later. And the terrific service continued all night.

But that's not even the best part. It's the FOOD. Creative menu, mixing traditional Italian items with local, fresh ingredients and many surprising flavor twists. Also: you have a choice of 1/2 portion or full. What a revelation! Every restaurant should offer this. We live in the U.S. and think the portions served are too large - wasteful. All 7 of our group ordered 1/2 size and it was perfect.

Some highlights: a cold pea soup, with smoked mushrooms, truffle oil and cream fraiche. Yum! Braised short ribs, falling off the bone (local beef too). The halibut on risotta was heaven. Not kidding. And the salmon as well. Then there is DESSERT. Save room! We had a few and shared.
Very good wine choices.

Our entire group raved about their meals and can't wait to return. Since some of them live in Victoria, it will be easier for them (alas - I have a long way to go).

Lastly, the interior is beautiful. Tall ceilings. Warm tuscan colors like yellow ochre and brick. Fun mix of period art (Modigliani!) - and our table was right under the large skylight - giving a glow to the evening.

Thank you Greg and Sylvia for a wonderful evening. We loved it!

The dinners we had at cafe Brio were so good we returned several times during our recent two week stay! Service was superb; this staff knows the menu and they are well trained. Their advice was spot on! Whoever is cooking the risottos in this kitchen is a master. The scallop/ mushroom risotto dish was so delicious my husband had it twice. I must admit I sneaked a few bites... Wow!
The halibut on tomato risotto was equally scrumptious and we both loved the rockfish and shrimp combination. Though we devoured the seafood offerings, the Pork feature was a highlight as well. It seems this team produces quality dishes on a consistent basis. I love the fact that one can order a half or full portion; it allows for such flexibility when selecting what you'd like to try. Don't skip simple things like the Romaine Heart salad. It was truly imaginative and delightful. Oh and desserts!!!! Leave room... they are exquisite. This restaurant has an ambiance that will quickly win you over. Great staff, super music ( very eclectic) and food that will keep you coming back. Can you ask for more?

My daughter and I had dinner here on the vine covered patio on 6/6/14. We both enjoyed our meals, the attentive staff, and the ambiance. I had the Spaghettini with tomato and basil and my daughter had the halibut, which was cooked to perfection. We both thought our meals were some of the best we had ever had. They also had a good selection of wine. We will definitely be back!
