“Nice Place to Visit”
Reviewed 18 July 2007

We recently visited Victoria on Vancouver Island from July 7-14. We had amazing weather as they were experiencing a heat spell which we are used to being from Ontario. Because they do not usually experience such hot temperatures, some accomodations and restaurants do not have A/C as it is usually not necessary.
We stayed at a timeshare, Destination at Royal Victoria Suites which was a lovely two bedroom apartment in a Heritage Building right downtown and within walking distance of everything. There are a lot of nice pubs & restaurants, Irish Times, The Swan, two of our favourites. The parliment building inside tour is a must and is free. Also the BC museum and Craigdarrough Castle also worth the visit. The Victoria harbourfront is lovely and has cute little harbour ferries that can move you around from spot to spot if you get tired of walking.
Only unpleasantness of Victoria is the obvious problem of homelessness which was disturbing.
We also took a nice drive up to Tofino which takes you through Cathedral Grove where you will see some of the biggest red cedars you will ever see.

“Victoria, BC”
Reviewed 25 June 2007

Wonderful little city in a quant harbor on the tip of Vacouver Island. Took the Victoria Clipper from Seattle--a high speed catamaran with food and beverage service through beautiful Puget sound.

Former British influence abounds. BC Museum of History (rivals the Smithsonion) and Butchart gardens a MUST see.

Go in August on the weekend of the Dragon Boat races!!

Stayed at the Fairmont Empress. Awesome hotel!!

“Back to England”
Reviewed 6 May 2007

Traveling from the state of Washington through the San Juan Islands is a nice experience filled with clean, fresh air as well as virgin forests and sights on the way. The super ferries make us forget of the old memories of small, slow, ferries as the water vehicle has almost halved the trip from Washington to Vancouver Island.

When you arrive in Victoria, you feel England all around you. The architecture, people, and surroundings all shout British, and thank God, not French. The people are friendly and helpful for the most part and its a pleasant experience.

The Provincial Museum, ( I think the name is changed recently) near the center of the city and harbor, is a must see. It is full of Indian/Eskimo artifacts as well as the environmental aspects of fishing, logging and other aspects to the NorthWest living and history.

You can have tea and crumpets at the Empress Hotel, see the Provincial Buildings, take an English carriage ride, as well as many other things that are of interest. Buchart Gardens is a must also, and there are very few prettier places on earth.

The entire visit wont last a week, but its a nice place to spend a few days on the way to Vancouver, which is another fast ferry ride from Vancouver Island to its mainland namesake, and thats another review. Enjoy!

“Small Tourist city - spend a day or two at most”
Reviewed 20 September 2006

Some things I wish I knew before I went:
Victoria is a very small city with a very walkable tourist core.
Coming in from Seattle without a car is a very viable alternative.
The BC museum is interesting for its native culture and art - and that's it. It can be seen in 2-3 hours thoroughly.
Adults can stroll the harbour and have a nice meal at the many nice restaurants and drinks at the english and irish style pubs.
Kids will like the tiny but fun bug museum (you can hold them!) You can be in and out of there in an hour easy.
The Parliament building lights up at night and makes a nice picture but that's about it.
Buchart Gardens is very nice and very relaxing if you can avoid the tourist hordes. It is also very expensive to get in (like Disney World expensive).
There is a surprisingly active night life for 20 somethings.
The horse and buggy rides are a complete waste and go nowhere for a ton of money ($80!)
The seaplanes are cool if you can afford it.
The whale watching trips in the Zodiacs can be great - look for ones run by Simon Fraser marine biologists.
East coast of Vancouver Island (Parksville et. al.) is remarkably boring and provincial
Gulf Islands are like the San Juans only 10% less (exchange rate joke) and still well-worth a trip. You'll need tranpo once on the island (bikes would be fine if your that type)
West Coast of VI (like Tofino) is stunning - like Big Sur in a rain forest. I would highly recommend that (seaplane from Victoria to Tofino would be dream trip for me)....

“Rockland and the Government Park”
Reviewed 8 June 2006

My wife Barbara and I stayed at the Prior House (highly recommend) in the Rockland area of Victoria. Rockland is an old residential area about 3 km (about 2 miles) above the Victoria harbor. Among the stately homes you will find the Government Gardens. The free Government Gardens maintained by volunteers are on the grounds of United Kingdom’s representative to British Columbia. We were there during the blooming of the rhododendrons, and it was magnificent. Enter off Rockland just south of St. Charles.
