“An excellent slopeside hotel with great staff”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 1 February 2012

We visited this hotel in January, and being my second stay at the Fairmont Chateau I wasn't dissappointed.

Location: First off, as a snowboarder, the location of this hotel is great. Right at the bottom of the ski run and straight onto the lifts in the morning. The hotel is located in Blackcomb, so not Whistler village, which is about a 5-10min walk away. But for those too lazy to walk (myself included!) the hotel provides a shuttle that loops around the village every 15mins.

Rooms: Our room on this visit was great. It was a standard room, but looked to have been recently upgraded. The bed was very comfortable, with plenty of storage, an LCD TV and seperate bath and show in the bathroom, which I prefer. Noise is a big bug bear of mine in hotels, so other than the odd noise of people walking through the corridor, it was very quiet which was amazing for a hotel this size. It was very well presented and spacious and the house-keeping staff are amazing, making the rooms look and smell fresh every day.

Facilities: With 2 pools, 4 hot tubs, a gym, sauna and male and female steam rooms, you couldn't ask for more, plus being handed a cold beer in the hot tub is the epitome of bliss for me!. There are 3 restruants on site, a spa, boutique shop and ski valet service - you get to hand your equipment to a lovely member of staff after a day on the slopes.

Staff: I have yet to dispute any service we recieved in Canada as a whole, but the Fairmont staff really are second to none. From the reception desk (Lucas was amamzingly helpful and engaging) to house keeping to the staff in the pool area and Mallard Bar - they all make you feel special and no matter how insignificant (or great - replacing our door!) your request may be, nothing seemed too much for them. They provide an individual service and are all fantastic.

Food: Is very good. As part of our package we had a room credit to spend on food and drink each day. We normally had breakfast in the Portabello - great choice of foods for breakfast, with a sandwich, soup and pizza service for lunch. The sandwiches here are Amazing - seriously, every other sandwich pales to insignificance against these for me. The Mallard Bar provides a good bar menu - which is top quality as it comes from the restruant. The Wildflower restraunt, provides great food, but found the menu very limited compared to 2 years ago when there was much more choice. The Grill Room is the highend steak restruant which did a great meal but I didn't think it was any better than the Wildflower as all the staff are so attentive and service is brilliant throughout.

Negative: Conferences!!!!!! Members of my party found it very irritating that the lobby and bar were often unpassable due to so many people milling around. Attendees seemed intent on using every available space, apart from the conference facilities provided for them. I am hard pressed to find anything negative to say about the staff and hotel itself though.

Overall: This is a fantastic hotel. Despite being so large, you still get the service of a more boutique hotel - tailored and indivudal to you. I love the location of this hotel and the facilities and service it provides are great.

Room Tip: Make sure you get a recently improved room.

The Fairmont Chateau Whistler is a grat old hotel in a fantastic location. The Fairmont Chain buys great hotels, but they aren't really known for fixing them up. This hotel doesn't need much. We were met at the driveway by the valet/bell hop who took our skis and boots, ourt baggage, gave us a room key and welcomed us to the hotel. By the time we found our room, the luggage was there. We had three guys share a two twin bed room with a cot, and it worked out well. No kitchens, but roomy otherwise. The Mallard Bar in the lobby had outstanding ambiance, but the drinks were pricey. I had their best Canadian Merlot for $12C per glass. We ate in the village, sand the short walk through the park was refreshing. The ski in - ski out ability from the ski check out area on the ground floor was easy and convenient. The room was quoted initially as a little over $300, but by the time the HST and the Room Tax and the self-parking was added, it wound up being closer to $400 per night. The three hot tubs were awesome and the indoor-outdoor pool and health club complex were excellent. Bar service (no BYO) at the hot tub was pretty slow, but the international crowd was very entertaining. Bottom line, if you can afford it and want to go first cabin, this is the place in Blackcomb (Whistler BC).

Room Tip: All rooms seemed equal. We have stayed here three times now.

Dear Guest,

Thank you for continuing to choose The Fairmont Chateau Whistler as your home away from home on your visits to our resort. We were pleased to read about your seamless arrival experience and that your accommodations were comfortable. It was disappointing to hear that you found the poolside service slow. Please rest assured that this is not indicative of the level of attentiveness we pride ourselves on delivering at The Fairmont Chateau Whistler.

We hope to have the opportunity to welcome you back again soon!

Sincerely,

The Fairmont Chateau Whistler

Let me first start by saying a huge thank you to Frederic (“Fred”) who works on the Mallard Lounge Bar. You made our stay exceptional and were always friendly and courteous. We are truly thankful to you and the Fairmont Château.

Myself and my Fiancée flew to Canada for a two week holiday in January 2012 staying in the Fairmont Chateau on a skiing package. Below are our thoughts on what was a fabulous holiday.

Does Well...

1) Rooms
The bedrooms were clean and spacious with a large LCD TV, coffee making facilities, power shower and two extremely comfortable double beds. The décor was elegant (some may say slightly old fashioned) and the view from our room was gorgeous, looking out over Blackcomb Mountain.

2) Service
This is where I believe the Fairmont distinguishes itself. The service at the Bar (as expressed earlier) was exceptional and definitely worth a visit. Housekeeping were always polite and reception/guest services were always available and willing to help no matter our request.

3) Food
We only ate in the hotel once at the 'Portobello' which is good for a quick snack and includes a deli, pizzas etc. For a more intimate meal you have the choice of either the 'Wildflower' or the highly recommended 'Fairmont Chalet' just a short walk up the road. For us however, the choice in Whistler Village was too tempting and caters for all tastes.

4) Facilities
The Fairmont has an on-site spa (all the usual treatments can be found but be aware, they are on the expensive side). There is also a steam room, sauna and outdoor Jacuzzi. This was a real treat after a long day skiing, simply relax and enjoy a nice glass of Canadian Ice Wine (recommended by Frederic) looking out over Blackcomb Mountain in the snow.

5) Value for Money
Our two week package cost a little over £2,100 per person which included 10 day lift passes, ski hire, flights, transfers and accommodation. Overall we thought this was excellent value for money given our stay.

6) Location
The Fairmont is situated in the upper village which is smaller than the main village and therefore has less to do. However, the upside is that Gondola queues are often shorter and the main village is only a ten minute walk (alternatively you can use the complimentary shuttle provided by the hotel). The Excalibur Gondola is on the Fairmont doorstep leading up Blackcomb Mountain, and for those wanting to get to Whistler this can be accomplished by getting the Magic chairlift and skiing down to Whistler (10 minutes max and a nice gentle run).

Could do better…

1) Conferences
A small point given our wonderful stay, however, there were a number of conferences on during our time at the Fairmont meaning that the bar was often crowded (and open only to the conference during the day on a couple of occasions). Other than this it’s really difficult to point out any other areas for improvement.

Overall Holiday

Overall this was a terrific holiday and hotel and one I would certainly recommend to anyone looking to stay in Whistler.

Thanks once again to everyone at the Fairmont,

Jamie Ham and Rebecca Sherratt

Room Tip: Slope side rooms have the most fantastic views.

My husband and I stayed here for a weekend in November 2011 just before ski season. We loved our room, our bed was delightful. The location is a little walk from the village, depending on your level of acitivity. It was just lovely for us. The hotel is pet friendly and we met some lovely dogs. We enjoyed the atmosphere in the bar for a nice, dimly lit dinner for the two of us. Our service was outstanding and the food was great. My husband stays in Fairmonts a lot but I have only stayed in a few. I really enjoyed this hotel. We shopped at Snowflake and we were treated very nicely. I was impressed with the service at Snowflake. I also like that the ski lifts were so accessible from the downstairs area.

My family and I stayed at this beautiful property Christmas thru New Years. This was our second stay at the hotel, the first being two years ago. The room was large and clean, the beds and pillows very comfortable. Our room had a beautiful mountianside view. The lobby was large and comfortable. The hotel restaurant and bar area were always very busy but it never seemed so because of the professional and efficient wait staff. From the front desk, the valet, maid staff, to the servers at the pool area, everyone was quick with a smile and hello. A great friendly upbeat attitude. The gym and pool and jacuzzi area were large and very popular. The ski rental facility downstairs in the hotel was wonderful. Renting was a breeze and stressless. Whistler village is lively and is a short walk from the hotel. There are many activities if you don't ski such as snowmobiling, dog sledding and zip lining. My wife and daughter bobsledded down the Olympic Bobsled run! By the way, the sking was great. Another fantastic stay at the wonderful Fairmont Chateau Whistler!!

Spent a few nights at the Fairmount Chateau Whistler in January, right before a big storm hit..... With the lack of snow during our visit we made the best of our time away and enjoyed the exceptional amenities that the FC had to offer. The fitness center is equipped with an outdoor pool that starts inside, a few large clean hot tubs, a lap pool (underwater music.... No joke), a large sauna and a selection of infused water to rehydrate. Along with poolside beverage service the experience was awesome considering we weren't actually skiing.
The drinks at the bar were delicious and accompanied by excellent service, appetizers were on point.
I will definitely be back but I will park elsewhere, in a more reasonably priced lot

This trip was amazing, we went the first week in December, no crowds in the village or the slopes and the service at the Fairmont was top notch. Our mountianside suite was large, clean and nicely decorated. The tub is perfect for a soak after some skiing or snowshoeing! So many nice people have made Whistler their home and everyplace we went our service was quick and the people were pleasant and helpful!
Our only problem we had at the hotel was our keys kept going out on us, it was annoying but stuff happens!

Room Tip: I loved my mountainside view! I was on the 9th floor and the view was spectacular!
