“Classic Fairmont”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 4 December 2013

This is a fantastic hotel, representative of the Fairmont brand. The rooms are suitable and not as dated as some Fairmont properties. The gym and swim out pool are excellent. The lobby and lounge area are spectacular. The deli located on the lower level offers some healthy food options. The only criticism of this hotel would be that it is somewhat far from the lifts, however any similar hotels (such as the Pan Pacific) are similarly far from the lifts - plan on taking the shuttle or on a 10 - 15 min walk across the village.

This hotel provides exactly what you would expect from a five star resort. The rooms were very nice with incredibly comfortable beds. The staff were exceptional and the pool area was great. The upper village is quieter than the main village but it is only a ten minute walk away, or the hotel offers a free shuttle service.

Great service. Smooth check in, staff were great with helping with luggage, car valet service $40 and option to check in snowboard/ski gear for pick up in the village was appreciated. Our room was on the 7th floor near the top of the building and quiet. The room was dated. It was a decent size, the king size bed was comfy, the bed frame, couch and other chairs in the room looked as old as my parents. For what you pay and compared to the standards of other Fairmont properties, it wasn't really consistent with the brand. There were a lot different pools, hot tubs, and sauna and steam rooms. Pets are allowed which I think is great. We ended up ordering room service for dinner one of the nights and it was okay. It wasn't close to the village. About $10 cab ride each way. Overall good find, the service makes it worthwhile but the property needs an upgrade for the price they charge.

Dear Guest,

Thank you very much for your feedback. We are glad you enjoyed the service during your stay.

As a hotel with 550 rooms we have continuous plans in place for ongoing renovations and updates. This past year we invested 2.5 million dollars in renovating our corridors and 1.7 million in updating our health club including four whirlpools, indoor and outdoor swimming pools and guest change rooms.

We hope to welcome you back to the hotel soon.

Sincerely,

Christopher Smart

We came here looking to get away and found more of what we were trying to avoid.

The first thing I saw in the lobby was a woman with her two shitzus lounging on a sofa. Yes, the dogs were ON the sofa. There are dogs everywhere, and they are allowed to sit where guests do. I find this bizarre and VERY unhygienic. Had my asthma been more severe this would have been a problem.

Then, we were looking forward to relax at the pools, but the hotel was out of robes. How can a hotel be out of robes? I booked my stay a while ago and I am a member of the president's club. Staff were not apologetic and we had to go to the health club in our street clothes with a change bag, which is not a problem except when you are expecting these little things that will make the price tag justifiable.

The health club is another aspect of the hotel that leaves much to be desired. For starters it is FILTHY. Not only people and their wild children are free to roam the facilities wearing their street footware carrying dirt everywhere, but the locker areas and the areas surrounding the pools stay dirty. For the three times I visited the facility I never saw anyone clean the dirty, hair-laden floor of the locker rooms. Why are there no more cleaning staff and why are members not asked to leave their shoes at the entrance is beyond me. Moreover, there are no signs asking members to have a shower before entering the pools, so you'll be swimming on everyone's après ski sweat and god knows what else.

Wild children are another problem if you are looking to relax. If you are in any of the hot tubs, beach balls will splash you and even hit you if you don't watch out, they, along with unruly teenagers will splash and dive in the lap swimming pool; you'll have to look up constantly. Staff will not say or do anything to help this situation.

As if that wasn't enough, my next door neighbours left their little yapping dog in the room while they went partying one night. Bell staff could not do anything for us because they could not reach them. Early-morning screaming children running down the hallways is another ocurrence that will make you feel angry for paying so much money for a room here.

While the rooms were very clean and nice, it is unfortunate all the other factors I mention can, and will ruin your stay. So if you think you'll spend a relaxing, sofisticated time in this property, think again unless you like package-family style holidays with dogs included.

At one point Fairmonts were a synonym of refinement and sofistication; I find is not the case n this property where anything goes. I feel bad for the chambermaids who have to clean all that dog and family-style detritus.

First and last one for me.

Dear Guest,

Thank you for taking the time to provide feedback on your most recent visit. We were very disappointed to read about your less than satisfactory experience.

Similar to most luxury hotel companies, Fairmont Hotels and Resorts are 'pet friendly'. Please rest assured that we do have strict housekeeping guidelines in place to address the cleaning of our guest rooms and public spaces once our furry guests have departed. Please accept our apology if this did not appear to be the case when you first arrived.

We were disappointed to learn that you found that the hotel was out of robes. We were very disappointed to read that your stay fell short of your expectations. The level of service that you describe is certainly not indicative of the warm hospitality we pride ourselves on delivering at The Fairmont Chateau Whistler.

Please accept our apology for a less than outstanding stay. We hope to have the opportunity to restore your faith in our hotel.

What a treat. Look for deals and enjoy the best hotel in Whistler for location and views. Staff amazing. Friendly, easy going but professional. Not stuffy or pretentious, but classy, elegant and kid, dog, grandma grandpa, mum dad et all friendly. Something for everyone. Great Mallard Lounge to Lounge in. Wonderful view of the Blackcombe Gondola and Mountains of Whister. Shop for magazines etc. Spa, upsacle clothing store, great choice of restaurants. Go the week before American Thanksgiving for a quieter time and cheaper rates. Ask for an upgrade and be surprised. NO Kitchens but small quiet fridge for your snacks , Free coffee and tea in room. Amazing housekeeping. knowledgable staff. Excellent cleanliness, free coffee, tea, juices, newspapers in the lobby. They love kids, well behaved dogs that can enjoy dinner with you. Great Pool, hot tubs, work out rooms. 550 rooms, 550 staff. Check with hotel if they have specail events like great entertainment in the Mallard Lounge. Americans love this hotel.
After December 15th more activities to do, so be aware if you want to do lower snow activites like sleigh ride etc. Only runs after a dump of snow. Canadian Wilderness, a business run from Whister, booked through Whister Tourism offers up in the mountains activities. Be knowledgable before you go. Contact your hotel to make sure of dates and times for activities. WONDERFUL HOTEL for Honeymoon,a weeks break with the kids, a 3 day weekend with someone you love, or a BC Hotel to show off to you realtives. 10 people 1 week 20,000 dollars to have fun, if not more. Great cooking program for kids 10 and up where they can earn a chefs jacket. GREAT LOCATION away from all the noise of the village but a 10 minute walk if you crave some action.

Room Tip: Choose a room above 6th floor looking out to Gondala and with a Juliette Balcony for fresh air and v...

I recently retired on November 9th, I had decided to spend a family getaway up at Whistler, so I chose to book at the Fairmont Chateau Whistler Resort. It was during Cornucopia week, it was such a great stay, it had all the extras that one could have, pool, hot tub (in door and out door), sauna, steam room, work out area, great dinning, lounge. Awesome service, close walking distance to all the shops in the village.
Would go and book there again, we loved our experience so much. It was our first time to Whistler, and what made the visit so great was the hotel and our family sharing my retirement with my wife and I, now that was special.

Room Tip: The rooms are a little dated, but apart from that, they were very clean, and comfortable, and quiet.
