We stayed from 1 Jan for 2 weeks and absolutely could not fault the resort. It surpassed all of our expectations by miles.
The location is perfect - right at the foot of Blackcomb mountain so truly ski in and out, yet a ten minute walk from the central village. There is a shuttle bus which takes 2/3 minutes into the village and runs like clockwork every 15 minutes.
All of the staff are so friendly and courteous and the happy and friendly service is a welcome change from experience of the Alpine ski resorts.
The health club is fantastic - well equipped for a hotel gym and with fabulous sauna, steam room and hot tub facilities as well as indoor and outdoor heated pools. The pools and hot tubs, especially the outdoor ones, were really busy when the ski lifts closed. There is waiter service for drinks around and in the pools. The best part for us, as a family, was how welcome children are - they were provided with pool toys and allowed in the spa bath and all the hot tubs (with the toys). They had a fantastic time, as did all the other kids we saw. However if you were looking for a grown up health club I guess this would be a huge downside. One point to note is that there are lots of health club members from the local area so the gym gets very busy with them especially in the morning. On a few occasions I couldn't get on a single machine.
We had an issue with shoddy housekeeping, as our room cleaning was extremely poor halfway through the holiday. However, when I alterted the manager to the situation it was fully rectified and we were more than sufficiently compensated for the inconvenience.
The Mallard Lounge is excellent for cocktails après ski and the food is the same excellent standard as the other restaurants in the hotel. It's not cheap (nowhere in the hotel is) but we didn't mind as the setting is perfect and food and drinks are superb quality. There is a fantastic après atmosphere in the Mallard with a live musican every afternoon.
We ate every morning in the Wildflower. A buffet breakfast sounds very steep at $32 each but the quality was truly beyond compare - fresh smoothies, hot chocolate with cream and sprinkles, omelettes made to order, as well as every other breakfast item you could imagine. Children under 5 eat free and the staff were fantastic with my 2. Dinner is extremely good quality and the price is comparable with other fine dining Whistler restaurants.
The concierges are extremely friendly, helpful and knowledgable and gave us a wealth of information about activities and dining options locally. They also arranged lift passes for us and liased with the ski school on our behalf when we had an issue.
There is a ski hire shop and ski valet service in the hotel, where you can also book ski school. We found this to offer excellent service.
The deli, Portobello, on the bottom floor, makes the best fresh sandwiches I have ever tasted!
We will be back next Winter and will definitely try other Fairmont hotels in the meantime.
Cannot recommend highly enough.
