“What a treat!”
Reviewed 30 September 2008

I phoned the hotel the morning we arrived and received the BC residents special - $150 per night. The room was beautiful and the king bed was super comfy. We stayed on the 8th floor and enjoyed mountain views out the front. The windows open, but one was broken. Whistler Village was below, but is mostly hidden by trees. The valet would not let us park, even for a minute to check in, without handing over our keys. The phone was broken and our fridge did not work, but we didn't really need either. Someone came and looked at the fridge and claimed that it really was only a cooler and wasn't supposed to be cold like a fridge. Well, what good is a room temp. cooler? I gave up and let it be. The best part of the hotel is the outdoor/indoor pool - you can swim in and out, and indoor or outdoor hottubs. We had the whole place to ourselves at 9 at night! The view was lovely. There's your choice of a steam sauna- I think it was eucalyptus steam, or a dry sauna. Very nice. I still can't believe they were all empty.

  • Liked — The hottub pool area and super comfy bed. Gorgeous bathroom too!
  • Disliked — The valets.

I stayed here on an overnight "stopover" from the Whistler Mountaineer train to/from Vancouver.
Room: very good. A little dark in the furnishings / carpet areas, but quite roomy & large windows provided plenty of light. More than adequate. Internet access was available.
Desk (Reception) and Concierge both very good. Helpful & efficient.
The "Mallard Bar" is always good, and it does not have TV's so there is no "Sports distraction". It also has a Smoking Lounge area (sealed off from the rest of the bar).
"The Wild Flower" is a good restaurant, and the buffet breakfast there was more than adequate.
The hotel is located at the base of Blackcomb Mountain, 5 minutes walk to Whistler Village (the Chateau is in the Upper Village).
Shopping arcade below the hotel, including "Portbello's" Restaurant, which also has a great reputation.
I am a long-term Whister skier and had never stayed at the Chateau beforehand - it was worth the wait.
I didn't use the Golf or Pool / Spa facilities.

  • Liked — Convenience and elegance
  • Disliked — Rather dark rooms.

This was our family (myself, husband and 16 year old son) first visit to Whistler. After much reading here on the board I selected the Fairmont Whistler for our 4 night stay. I was deciding between the Four Seasons and the Fairmont.
As it turned out our son was sick for the trip. After a visit to a clinic in town it was determined that he had strep throat. So, even though Crankworx was in the village that weekend, our son was sick in bed.
Thank god for the Fairmont Gold staff (Genvieve, Kevin, etc) they just saved our vacation. Our room was immediately ready. Since our son was resting in the room, we spent a lot of time in the Gold Lounge, which was just up the hall from our room. It really just felt like our living room.
Breakfast was cooked to order eggs each day, along with lots of the standard goodies. My husband is a big coffee drinker, and the pot was always full. Evening snacks...a nice variety too. But, the main ingredient was the fantastic people who work at the Fairmont Lounge.
We were in Vancouver after our trip to Whistler, and we heard a voice from the crowded street say "I know you guys!". Whoa...it was Kevin from the Fairmont! We were lost, trying to find our way to the Musuem of Anthropolgy. Wouldn't ya know, he knew what bus for us to take. Just a small thing, but we thought it was pretty cool that here he was, once again, helping out our family.
I just have to add that in Vancouver we stayed at the Hyatt Downtown in the conceirge level rooms. Yes, the gals there were friendly. But, whatever the Fairmont staff is doing works...there just wasn't any comparison.
We loved our little glimpse of Canada and plan to return soon,.

I had high expectations for the Fairmont Chateau Whistler but was let down.

Good:
The lobby and public spaces are nice and I loved hanging out on the mountainside terrace with an iced cold beer.

Bad:
The hotel is showing its age - particularly in the dated hallways and guestrooms. Service was just 'okay' but not up to Fairmont standards; I didn't care much for the concierge, he was kind of rude (won't name names).

Overall
Fairmont needs to put some money into this property; it is really showing its age and needs to be refreshed.

Until this hotel is updated, I will be staying elsewhere in Whistler.

We originally were scheduled to stay at this hotel in July when our 2 yr old dog got extremely ill and we had to cancel. The hotel worked with us to get full refund from Expedia even though we were supposed to have a 30 day cancellation. We re-booked for the end of August/beginning of September.
We are so glad we re-booked our trip. The service at the Chateau is truly amazing. Everyone is there to make your experience the best possible. The valets, bellboys, bartenders, servers, front desk are some of the best we have ever experienced.
We golfed the Chateau course, it is an amazing course, very tough but one of the most beautiful we have ever played. We also played Whistler Golf Club, we had a black bear 10 feet from the green! We liked both courses but the most beautiful and most challenging is the Chateau course.
We had a few martinis at the Mallard Lounge, best martinis we have ever had (and most expensive). Very classy bar with great live music.
The rooms were nice but nothing spectacular. We had a higher expectation since it was a Fairmont but the service did make up for the average room.
We would go back and stay based on the fabulous service.

We were excited to stay at the Fairmont as we have stayed at the Vancouver Airport hotel and loved it. Check in was good - we asked for early check-in and got it.

Once we arrived in the room we thought it was just a normal hotel room, no fireplace or kitchen amenities as you normally receive at Whistler. We had to call and request the dog bed that was supposed to be provided, and the robes so we could use the pool.

Safe never worked. In-room dining was expensive but the fish and chips was excellent.

Really bad layout to get to the pool/spa. You walk along the third floor and then down a metal fire escape - not nice at all! This is the way you are directed to go, so that you don't wander through the lobby.

OK stay but there are better hotels with nicer amenities for the money.

We stayed here the last weekend of August 2008. The weather had been rainy all week, but it cleared up and was sunny and beautiful. It was cool, low 60 F/16 C during the day. At night at bit chilly at 40 F/8 C.

The Fairmont is in the upper village, which if you want to be close to the mounatain and away from the hussle and bussle of town, it is perfect. They have a shuttle that runs to three stops in the village and back to the hotel. If you can get to Whistler without a car you really don't need one once you are here.

This Fairmont is smaller than others we have stayed at, but still very nice. We stayed on the Gold floor. If you can splurge for the extra money, I highly recommend it. It is well worth the price. On the Gold floor you have private check in/out, included: breakfast with made to order omelettes; free pop, water, snacks; DVD check out; helpful staff all just for you.

We stayed in a King room, it was very nice. No complaints. We had a fireplace, jetted tub, seperate shower, dual vanity, and small balcony. Room was clean, comfortable, and quite.

The rest of the hotel was always busy, but never felt crowded. They have a nice fitness center with everything you might need. 3-4 pools (heated) and 4-6 hot tubs (seat like 12 people). Was great for after we hiked, and would be really great in winter after a long day of skiing.

There are a few restuarants at hotel, but we opted to eat in town. Lots to choose from, McDonalds, Quiznos, pasta, asian, upscale, etc. Things to definately do: ziptrek, walk the village, gondola ride to top of Whistler mounatin.

We can not wait to go back. :)
