We had mixed feelings about the Horstman House. The hotel staff is excellent and the Hotel itself is beautiful with the free bus stop right in front. We loved sitting in the hot tub while it snowed as the kids swam in the heated pool. The room we had was beautiful, roomy, and the balcony was large and looked out onto the mountain with an occasional skier or snowboarder going by. So why the mixed feelings? We have three kids and apparetly the floors are paper thin. Ironically we thought the kids were being well behaved when we got a knock on the door at 10:30 at night from the very annoyed guy downstairs asking for us to "walk lighter". He acted as though we were stomping around. The next day the front desk called to politely ask us to keep it down, my wife talked to the attendant who was very nice but admitted noise travelled easily. We heard banging coming from the ceiling downstairs so apparently we never were quiet enough. This put a damper on things for us. Also we learned they put a $500 hold on your credit card for upto two weeks until they do damage inspection - again with 3 kids this made us very nervous! All in all we loved the Horstman and their staff was ALWAYS professional and courteous, but after our experience we'd feel more comfortable going back once the kids are older.

I was in Whistler recently for a conference. Two of my colleagues were staying downtown in a small hotel and they were giving me a hard time about this "Horstman House" place that no one had ever heard of. When they came into my room their jaws dropped - it has to be one of the nicest rooms I have stayed in ANYWHERE in the world (and I travel a lot!).

It is a nice looking chalet-style building at the base of Blackcomb mountain, a 10-minute walk from the Fairmont hotel where the conference was. It was easy to get to by bus that stopped right out front. It was a 4 minute drive or 25 minute walk from the lower village.

Because I arrived earlier in the day I had to check-in downtown at another hotel near the visitor's centre (they give you these details when you make your reservation). That was simple enough. You are given a card key which gives you access to the building, your room, and the other facilities. The lobby has nice leather couches and comfortable chairs, a pool table, foosball table, checker board, fireplace, and big-screen TV. There is also a ski locker room on the main floor and underground parking.

The room was very nice. I had a one-bedroom suite which was about 700 sq feet with a small balcony. The suite was very tastefully decorated with beautiful framed black and white photos of the mountains, a nice change from the usual tacky art you find in most hotels. There was a TV and VCR in the main living room with a couch and comfy chair, gas fireplace, and a dining room table for 6.

The kitchen had a full-sized stove and fridge, dishwasher, toaster, coffee maker, kettle, and nice dishes and utensils. There were plastic cups to take out to the hot tub, and even real wine glasses - this was a very nice touch because I have traveled to many places where I bought wine and drank out of mugs or just shared the bottle. This was much classier!

The bedroom had a very nice big king-sized bed, a TV, VCR, closet, iron and full-sized ironing board. The bed was comfortable but I would have liked a few extra pillows.

The bathroom was HUGE! In fact, it was probably bigger than the entire room my friends were staying in downtown! Very nice tile, a deep soaker tub, a very sylish shower stall, and lots of counter space.

There was a stacking washer and dryer in the closet near the kitchen, a very useful set of appliances when you come home from skiing and your clothes are wet. Just remember to bring a bit of laundry detergent with you.

Down the hall from the suite there is a small weight room with a few excercise machines, a stationary bike and a treadmill. This opens onto a patio where there is a hot tub and heated pool. There is also a barbeque outside and I used it a couple of nights to cook steak and chicken.

The suite had very nice wood blinds on all the windows - another very nice touch that added to the warmth of the room.

The girl I dealt with at the front desk was extremely helpful in providing information about Whistler and how to get around. She also made sure an important message got to me right away. Of course I have since forgotten her name (I think it was Mandy?) but her customer service skills were exceptional.

The only detraction from the room was the water dripping outside. It was near or above freezing the entire time I was there so the snow melting off the roof dripped on to the patio outside. It was okay when the windows were closed but when the windows were open it was noticeable. I had to close the windows at night to minimize the noise.
It was otherwise quiet - no real noise from other guests or from the street.

Local calls are not free - although in the folder in the room it says they are. When I checked out I was a bit surprised to have $13 in phone bills, but when I explained the folder in the room still said local calls were free she immediately waived the charges without any hesitation. Again, first rate customer service by the star agent at the front desk.

You can ski right to the building although I never did, but it would have been nice to do at the end of the day.

This would be an ideal place to stay if you like a place where you have nice amenities and want to cook on your own. It saved me and my friends a lot of money as we bought groceries and they would come over most nights for dinner. The room is very comfortable for just hanging out, and we even caught a couple of curling matches on the big-screen downstairs.

I paid about CAD $190 a night including all taxes, which by Whistler standards is fairly reasonable. You could easily sleep 4 adults in a one-bedroom, and I saw a 2-bedroom suite with bunkbeds that a couple of families were sharing.

When you are comparing this to other properties consider that pretty much everything here is FREE with your room - secure underground parking, ski storage, washer and dryer, hot tub, barbeque, pool table and games (no need to feed them quarters) - all included. My friends paid $15 a day to park at their hotel downtown.

I hope to attend the same conference next year in Whistler and will certainly stay again at the Horstman House.

Stayed at the Horstman House Jan 14th-18th 04' 1 Bedroom. Nice King size bed with TV and closet space. Bathroom was huge, lots of counter space, separate shower stall & soaker tub! Unit comes with washer and dryer, good idea to bring some laundry soap from home. Kitchen W/stove, oven, fridge, microwave, dishwasher, full size coffee maker. Utensils were pretty good, in fact left my thongs (white rubber handles) & 2 steak knives (Henkels Eversharps) in room (#411) so if ya get that room ya owe me!!! Anyways, if you like NON-Stick fry pans, then you better bring your own. The unit only has cheap stainless steel pots n pans(1 pan, 3 kettles) they are a real pain to clean and cook with. I'm not sure but I think in Canada they use that crap for whatever reason. This is the second property I have stayed at and they all seem to have the stainless steel...

There is a large dining room table (seats up to 6) TV in living room (VCR) gas fire place and Queen size fold out couch. Each unit has a large balcony, great if you bring a small bar-b-q!! The bus stop is right across the street, takes only a few minutes to the Village. Best of all its FREE! Underground Parking with your own stall and thats free too! Secured gate!! Its pretty quiet there, unlike the village. I recommend them highly!!! Any questions e-mail me!!

My wife and I have been to the Horstman House twice in the last two years. We enjoyed both visits and would not hesitate to go back. The 1BR unit is very spacious. Some 1BR units are over 700 sf. The rooms have tasteful furniture, a gas fireplace, washer/dryer, deck, full kitchen, and wonderful bathroom with deep soaking tub. It sleeps four comfortably. The lobby is very nice with a large fireplace and leather chairs. It also has many activities for children (pool table, big screen tv, play room, swimming pool, etc.) This is a ski in resort with a free shuttle to the Village (3 minutes). It is within walking distance to Lost Lake. Enjoy your visit to the Horstman House!
