“Warm and clean”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 14 November 2013

Stayed at the Lazy Bear Nov 9 thru 12 while polar bear watching. The lodge is a log building with a log and knotty pine interior. A wood stove is in the center of the restaurant and another stove in the sitting room/den. The rooms are small and sparse and the bathroom has no counter space. However, that being said, the rooms are very clean, the hot water is hot, the beds are comfy and warm, and the heat does a pretty quick job. So, for being in Churchill with not easy access to a lot of amenities this lodge is very nice. The staff is very friendly and the restaurant service is quick. They also have a nice assortment of gifts in the gift shop and lobby. I'd stay there again.

If you want to see polar bears in Canada then this is the way to do it. Lazy Bear organized the whole trip from hotels in Winnipeg to flights to Churchill. We were met by friendly capable staff and looked after for three days of excursions. Two days on the tundra and one day of a town tour and dog sled ride. No one can guarantee where the polar bears will be but we were lucky and had sunshine and fabulous sitings on our first day. The second day was snowing and we only saw bears sleeping in the distance. This is the reality of wild life viewing where the animals are respected and their habitat is not altered for tourism. Full marks to Erin and Moira for some fabulous time in Churchill.

Arrive to Churchill and immediately fall in love with this small town, that has a little for everyone.
The lodge is very well mainained and managed, from the front desk to the café, restaurant and clenless. The only small disappointment was that the restaurant doesn't offer any alcohol, but are plenty of palces around.
The Motel also offers a wide range of activities witch were also very professional.

We went to Churchill in August 2013, and the Lazy Bear was a terrific place to stay. Rooms were great, food was wonderful - one of the top restaurants in Churchill. Staff were fabulous, and extremely helpful when it came to booking tours, and providing advice on where to go and what to do. August was a great time ( we would argue the best time) to go. We got to see and snorkel with Beluga's which was an exceptional experience, but also got to see bears. Over 10 while we were there. The guide that Lazy Bear uses is Gerald, and he is fantastic, and found lots of bears and whales. As someone who lives in Manitoba, I was both surprised and impressed with our Churchill experience. I would suggest that everyone should have Churchill on their bucket list. There was lots to do and see for a three night trip. Highly recommend.....

The lodge is made of wood, rustic and fitting for where you are. Rooms are small, cozy and I loved the comfy beds.

The staff were great, apart from the front desk girl (an Aussie I think) who is simply unfriendly and not a good ambassador to Churchill or the lodge.

We were there for 2 nights for the beluga whale tour which is a steal of a deal at $400 with accommodation, transfers, breakfasts, one dinner, and 2 tours.

We ate at the lodge the entire weekend as by Sunday when we planned to branch out, everything was closed which was disappointing. But the food was great..the included breakfasts had lots of options and were delicious, for dinner we had chard which surprisingly is like salmon but the whole meal with it's several veggies and potatoes was great. As was the homemade strawberry rhubarb pie. Anyway heard that it is probably the best place to eat in town. Apparently Gypsy isn't what it used to be.

Gerald, our guide, was excellent, and I will definitely stay at his bed and breakfast next time (Blue Sky) as he is so knowledgeable and it sounds like there you get a more personal experience. But his 3 hour cultural/heritage tour was great and we didn't regret at all being at the lodge.

The whale watching was fantastic, they are everywhere! Kayak with them if you so dare..it was amazing to be so close to them.

We saw a polar bear during the tour as well so it could not have been better.

I wish we would have had 3 days as we had little down time with the 3 tours, but I will definitely go back as the whole experience was amazing and Lazy Bear was a big part of that!

I didn't stay here but ate 3 main meals here. It would be the best place to stay in town and definitely the best served for meals. This is #1 for meals followed by Seaport close behind then Gypsy's a way back and then Tundra Inn at the end. Tundra had a bunch of weird tasteless food combinations for the same price as Lazy Bear. Lazy Bear looks rustic from the outside and is a little farther down the main street but is well done inside. I had the Arctic char twice that had a big portion, carrots, beets, squash and choice of potato + coffee for $31.31 including tax. The going price, well served.

Arrived at Churchill after an acceptable train ride from Winnipeg. Lazy Bear meat us at the station and took us to the Lodge. Check in was easy. Room clean but a little sparse. No closet. Beds were good shower was better. Breakfast was included and all you wanted to eat. Their tours are the big thing. The "local" tour was far more informative than I would have guessed. The Beluga Snorkel was excellent. We went twice. Guides were top rate and knew what they were about.

Room Tip: We overlooked the train tracks which was fine.

This is no regular log cabin. The timber was reclaimed from a fire in the boreal forest. Using hand tools, the logs fit together so well as to appear as if they were melted into each other. The windows were recycled from an 1800's Hudson Bay Trading Post, and if you look closely, you'll see the characteristic wave of the old glass. ... more   less
