“A glitzy, different kind of hotel experience”
Reviewed 4 July 2014

I was luck enough to stay at the Fort Garry for my cousin's wedding and the whole thing was quite the experience. It's a beautiful hotel, right in the middle of the city (I loved that you could walk across the street and be at the Forks!) with lots of fascinating history (and, rumour has it, a ghost or two!) There are no coffee machines or kettles in the room but you can call down for fresh coffee at any time. The fitness club is a bit of a hike to access - technically it's in the next building but once you get there you have access to a full gym. I also especially loved the bar just off the lobby - it felt like stepping back in time.

Keep in mind that, because the hotel is so old and is being historically maintained, the rooms are quite old fashioned. This isn't to say that they're bad, just not what you might expect from a classy hotel like this one. Embrace it!

Room Tip: Try to stay away from the floors either above or below the ballroom - if there's an event, you...

Years ago we had dinner at the Fort Garry on our Honeymoon but had never stayed there so this year we came for our 30th Anniversary. We ate a late lunch in the beautiful Palm Lounge and were surprised at the great quality of the food, lovely small plates, and outstanding liver pate as most only mention the breakfast. It's a small but well chosen menu but preparation is excellent. We came back for dinner, again excellent food plus lovely piano music. Pretty nice for a Monday night. We were a little disappointed at the room, large with nice bed and bath and linens and very clean but a little dated and bare, and configuration was not the best for our needs (I have a C-PAP, and my husband likes to read in bed and lamps and outlets were inconvenient) but then they are a bargain. We happened to mentioned that to the evening desk manager and he jumped into action then took me on a tour of 3 other available rooms, explaining the hotel face lift in process and then helped us choose one that felt just right and helped move all of our things, displaying supreme patience all the while. Best service we've ever seen. So now we are cozily settled in and looking forward to breakfast!

We stayed at the Fort Garry Hotel for two nights, separated by a trip up to Churchill to see the polar bears, with Natural Habitat. So we got to stay in two different rooms. The Fort Garry hotel is a grand building and boasts an impressive foyer. We found the staff friendly and helpful at check-in. Both times we had comfortable, clean rooms with everything we needed and very comfy beds that you don't want to get out of. Nice showers too. We had a welcome dinner for our group and the food provided by the hotel was really nice. The first night, staying on the 5th floor was a bit noisy. We enjoyed the breakfasts where you could order an omelette (or whatever) and have it cooked while you waited. There was a good variety of food, including fresh fruit, pastries, etc. While we were in Churchill we were able to leave our vehicle in the undercover park at the Fort Garry, along with excess luggage that we didn't need. One of the ladies in our Natural Habitat group told me that the hotel is supposed to be haunted and was told to keep the door locked, which I found absurd. I was curious enough to google it and sure enough, one of the rooms is reputed to be haunted, which was just up from where we were (this time on the second floor). We were not bothered and if anything had a better quality of sleep the second night. Overall the Fort Garry Hotel was a great place to stay.

We went for a family wedding. There were 5 that weekend. The facilities were great, catering was excellent. There is a full service health club attached to the hotel. Good location - a short walk to the Forks and the new museum.

If that's all you want you won't be disappointed. But in the room you won't get: a mirror; enough outlets to charge a phone; adequate shelving/drawers for clothing; more than 2 towels in the bathroom; bathroom shelving to hold more than your toothbrush; a coffee maker (you have to call room service); a fridge or mini-bar; a tv you can view (unless you sit on the windowledge).:

I stay here once every couple of years usually on Buisness. I can't explained why i have yet to review it.

So my wife and myself stayed here this week while we were in town for a date night and to attend a concert. We booked a King executive suite, which is a huge 2 room suite with a living room that contains a dining table, very large tv (60"?) , a sofa-bed and chairs. The other room is a very large room with a massive mission style bed, a desk, a large tv (46"?) and a large bathroom.

The hotel is absolutely beautiful and the original design and touches have been preserved wherever possible. Super high ceilings and tasteful decor throughout. The linens on the bed were luxurious, and towels were huge and soft. The tvs were great, and wifi worked well also.

Free coffee and tea service is available at all times, which is great and is delivered to your room with cookies or biscotti.

Parking in the indoor parkade was free also, valet is also available.

The breakfast Buffett is 1/2 ($10) price for guests, and it is incredible, i recommend the eggs Benedict!

This truly is a special place, and i truly enjoy staying here, a very romantic place for couples.

Service was second to none, as usual.

I booked this hotel through hotwire and got a rate of $77/night for 2 nights. It was beautiful, unique and very charming, walking distance to the Forks and less than 15 min walk to MTS centre.
Our room was large and comfortable (although a bit run down) and we appreciated the complimentary 24 hour coffee/tea room service (with cookies!). Breakfast buffet was $10 and very enjoyable. There is also a Sunday brunch that is $20 for guests but we did not try that. We did see the setup as we checked out, it took over the whole lobby so I'm sure it is worth the price :)
Vouchers for the fitness area and pool are included (you travel a short skyway to get to it). Parking is $15 day (self park, $20 for valet). The front desk failed to give us a parking voucher so we were paying each time we left parking lot. Upon checkout they removed the daily parking rate and gave us a free pass to exit the parking lot.
One odd thing is that the towel rack is far away from the shower/tub (by the toilet) and there is nowhere handy to hang towel while using bath. The walls are also thin and you can hear people clearly in the hallway (we did have to call security at 4 am to report a loud party that was swiftly taken care of). We also heard the sound of children laughing late at night which apparently is a common thing people here.... haunted? ;)

We stayed 3 nights and enjoyed every minute. The service, public rooms, the gym and pool access were great. We utilized the gym and pool everyday. We enjoyed our nights in the lounge entertaining old friends with the fab atmosphere, live music and great food. The breakfast was really wonderful. The service and quality food service is such a nice way to start the day. We stayed in a newly refurbished room, decorated in a Art Deco theme. A pretty room with newly painted walls, new furniture, new flooring and flat screen TV. The brand new Tempurpedic bed, Italian linens, wonderful pillows were heaven and made it difficult to want to leave. When travelling to Winnipeg we have stayed at the Fort Gary as often as possible; we love "the castle", the ambiance, location and being in the heart of Winnipeg. However on this trip we considered staying at a new hotel due to our knowledge that the private rooms were tired. The hotel is currently refurbishing the rooms and is in the process of a thoughtful project to make the private rooms live up to the public rooms with a decor appropriate for grande historical facility. Mr. Bell and his staff were excellent as always, as they made every effort to respond to our wishes and understood what was important to us. We will be back.
