“Small. Packed. Busy and great food!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 12 April 2013

Came here on a Friday night a bit past dinner hour and we had to be waited to be seated. Everything seemed to be a bit rushed as there wasn't enough staff on site. We ordered shortly after being seated but the food took a-while. It was worth the wait though. To top it off they messed up our order and our appetizer came last.

“Sabai Thai - Fast Lunch”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 5 February 2013

To help compensate for the punishing coldest day of the winter so far (an unbelievable -39°C) my beautiful wife (BW) and I decided to treat ourselves to luncheon out. Regrettably the days of leisurely luncheons only seem to exist now during vacations, so we needed to find somewhere that we could travel to, eat, and enable my BW to return to her work place within an hour. We chose Sabai Thai at 1113 Corydon Avenue, Winnipeg.

Situated on the corner of Wilton and Corydon Sabai Thai is a small non-descript and unpretentious building. It does have the luxury of its own 6 car parking stall at the back of the building, which on this day when we needed to minimize the amount of time we spent in the 'fresh' air was most welcome!

We arrived that 12:10 PM and were immediately greeted by a rather rushed looking young man wearing a green T-shirt, oversized jeans and runners - strange attire for a server. We asked for a table for two and were invited to sit anywhere we liked (there were only two other occupied tables).

The decor in Sabai Thai is clean, almost spartan. There is very little art on the wall, and the walls vary between green, tan and brown colours. A non-descript green patterned carpet finished the almost canteen-style look. However, most of the restaurant is made up of a generous size of booths, which comfortably sit four people. We chose the booth by the main window, to enjoy the glorious sunshine streaming into the restaurant.

The menu is divided into starters, soups, stir fry, noodles, and curries. The price for starters varies between $7 and $8, the soups $6 to $11, the stir fry $9.50, the noodles $9.50 to $10.50, and the curries $10 or $11 each. We chose the summer rolls, for $7, which contained a mixture of organic greens, rice and noodles wrapped in clear rice paper. Compared to other summer rolls I have tasted these were very pleasant. Mine contained an entire green bean in the centre, and were made up of whole lettuce leaves, not the shredded kind that tend to disintegrate when you bite into them. The peanut dipping sauce contained a hint of coconut and was very pleasant.

For $7 we received four summer roles, which at two each was more than enough for a lunchtime meal. Moreover, the summer rolls arrived within four minutes of us ordering them. We had barely finished our first summer roll when the second course we had ordered arrived! We had ordered the Pineapple Yellow Curry, to which we could add either tofu or chicken, so we added chicken. It came for $11. We also ordered, for an additional $2, a portion of rice, which had been supplemented with jasmine flavouring.

The portion size of the curry and rice was perfect to share between two people. Within the curry I found large pieces of onion, carrot, celery, pineapple (although from a can), red pepper and Thai basil. It was in a light creamy sauce which left a agreeable tingle rather than burn in our throats. All the vegetables were crisp and fresh. The rice was perfectly cooked.

Several other tables became occupied during our visit, and appeared to be served equally quickly and efficiently. I often find in such high-speed places that there is an intensity and background noise often from the kitchen. Not so here, the only time the kitchen sound could be heard (and that was really only the sound of crockery being stacked) came when the door was opened by the server as he exited or entered the kitchen.

We finished our meal within thirty minutes, and therefore were able to pay and exit the building within thirty five minutes of arrival, yet did not feel that we had a rushed lunch. Our bill before tax and tip was only $20!

Looking at the menu it is clearly worth going back; the starters include Battered Calamari, Chicken Satay, Crab Lagoon and the Green Mango Salad. There is a choice of four soups, Red or Green Curry, hot and sour (Tom Yum) and Tom Ka (the coconut soup). The noodles include Khao San Pad Thai, Khao Saway (vermicelli noddles), Mee Krop (the crunchy noodles) and Ginger and Black Bean Udon. There is a choice of mild or spicy Coconut Curry, the Three Mushroom Panang Curry, Matsaman Curry and Curried Eggplant. There is also a Lychee Curry Duck as a special at $18, which is a Chinese style barbecued duck in red coconut curry with lychee nut.

Great value for money, fast and efficient service, excellent quality, sensible portion sizes. We will definitely return.

“A nice small, intimate Thai restaurant”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 28 December 2012

A nice small, intimate Thai restaurant on Corydon. Service was great; our waitress made a good side suggestion for our meal. I had the Pad Thai, which was a bit bland. Next time I think I might try the curry.

“A taste of real Thailand”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 27 October 2012

We frequent this restaurant fairly often, either dine in, but mostly take-out. They do great in both categories. Their papaya salad is outstanding and so is their mango salad, which is only offered seasonally. Their summer rolls are delicious too. What we love about Sabai is the fact that they offer each of their entree dishes with meat or tofu, so if you are vegetarian, you can experience each dish too. My favourite is their red curry. Reasonable prices and nice customer service.
