Great Bear Camping
Reviewed 13 July 2014

*mature couples/friends* If you're a weekend camper tenting out, do yourself a favour and book the plateau. This spot is a hidden gem. The view is absolutely spectacular, with PRIVATE riverfront view and access, and completely surrounded by trees. Perfect for anyone looking to do some kayaking, canoeing. The staff were definitely friendly and very accommodating even going as far as supplying us with styrofoam cups for our morning coffee seeing as we forgot to bring some and the store was 20-30 minutes away. The washrooms were very clean and fresh, however the showers were a bit cold and small, but any shower at all while camping is a luxury. I'm sure we'll be going back numerous times per season so make sure you book the plateau before we do!

Room Tip: check out the plateau

My family had visited this park on the last week of July 2013 and were to stay until 02 Sept. We paid for a site on the river which turned out to be next to a seasonal camper. The occupant of that site had built a fire pit behind his camper during our occupancy then complained to the proprietor that my camper was blocking his view. I was aggressively told by the proprietor to move my camper to the very back of my lot which would put us in a mud hole and have our view looking into the back of the camper and under the deck of the seasonal member. When trying to explain this situation to the owner of the park, She completely lost it on me telling me that the guy next door paid more than me for his site therefore was a more valued customer. If we didn't like it we were no longer welcome there with a personal attack on my family saying they didn't want "our type" there. I assume our type are people who don't lay down and roll over for injustice. We are both professional people with a 2 year old daughter who abide by the rules of parks and resorts. The explosion and personal attack on our family was truly unprofessional and appalling. The campers on the opposite side of us witnessed the entire event and were mortified. They pulled out behind us worried that they would be next. This camp ground is not friendly to children with many of the seasonal campers claiming the beach as there own private real-estate and making no bones about. There are no amenities for the kids other than an unheated outdoor pool that is kept so cold, it is virtually unusable. Heaven forbid they put in a play ground to give the kids something to do. It's obvious that Great Bear Camp Ground treats their non seasonal customers with disrespect and as second class citizens, catering to the older seasonal members that hold the grounds hostage to there every whim. I would never recommend this park and would never give my hard earned money to any business that showed such disrespect to their customers. Absolutely shameful.

We are very sorry that this camper felt so personally offended by the owners decision he had to leave our campground. This is one of the most difficult decisions a business owner has to make.
We welcome seasonal and non-seasonal campers at Great bear Camping and wish all the best for 2013-2014.

Through the years we've tried out many (many, many) campgrounds and have never found the one that had the relaxing atmosphere, beautiful scenery, frendly people and the necessary amenities without going overboard (let's give the kids a chance to play with each other, rather then constantly entertaining them), until we stayed at Great Bear. On our first trip we arrived in the dark, when we woke to the view of the Saint John River, we were stunned. After the one weekend, we started enquiring about seasonal sites.

Well, we're on year number 2 of being seasonal and very happy we settled down. Well worth the 2 hour trip from Moncton every weekend.

Room Tip: Book early to get the waterfront sites (a number of them get booked the year before).

We've visited a few camp sites in New Brunswick and this one was definitely one of our favorites. The staff are super friendly and very welcoming when we drove up. The sites are nicely treed and landscaped instead of the parking lot style of other campgrounds.

Others have said its not great for kids because there isn't a playground - well, you just have to be creative. My young ones loved going down to the beach to skip rocks and feed the ducks - just like we used to do when we were camping.

The atmosphere is great. Lots of children running around - lots of waves and "good mornings" from the seasonal campers as they sat on their Taj Mahal patio setups (entertaining just to walk around and check those out!!).

There's a small town nearby with a grocery store/liquor store/dollar store where you can get everything you need if you forget anything.

We will definitely go back.

Would recommend to anyone. Plenty of water front sites for the weekend camper, lots of trees, level lots, centrally located clean bathrooms that only the laziest person would find a pain to walk to, great sandy beach and a pool! The only knock I have for Great Bear is the lack of playground equipment for kids. One set of swings is all they have right now. Overall, we enjoyed our stay and will definitely be coming back for more.

Great little campground. Lots of mature hardwood trees make a very nice spot. They have a well maintain pool, the owners are very nice and friendly. They have your typicle campground rules but are not overly uptight about them. We enjoyed our three night stay very much.

I have recently stayed at Great Bear Campground and I cannot say enough good things about the experience. The view from our waterfront lot was truly breathtaking and it would be hard to find such a wonderful view from any other campground in the province. The pool was clean and refreshing and the owners of the campground were friendly and helpful. But it was the seasonal campers along the river front that truly made this experience awesome. They were extremely friendly and they really made our camping experience special.

Room Tip: Walk through this lovely campground and visit with the special group of seasonals that are there!!!!
