“Where Quality meets Affordability”
Reviewed 1 November 2011

This hotel has a long, distinguished pedigree. Its creation was a central plank in the 1767 Treaty of Accommodation between the United Kingdom and France, which called for adequate lodging for rum merchants making their stops along the North Atlantic’s lucrative ‘circle of intoxication.’ In the centuries since, the Ramada St. John’s has established itself as a desirable place for weary travelers to stay during their visits to Newfoundland’s principle city.

Though not in the downtown core, the Ramada St. John’s offers much more attractive room rates, yet price alone should not be seen as the only selling point of this establishment.

Upon entering the hotel, one is impressed by the layout and cleanliness of the lobby. I would not be surprised if teak or mahogany was used in the construction of the staircases…You know they use elephants to help in lumber harvesting? I read that in National Geographic one time.

On account of my travel schedule, I arrived before the posted check-in time. Thankfully, the manager kindly allowed me to check-in early – he deserves a heartfelt fist-bump for his understanding. Barter is not an approved form of payment (I have found a widely-accepted rate elsewhere is one live egg-laying chicken for a 2 night stay); however, they do take American Express.

The guestrooms are spacious and comfortable with responsive temperature controls and new Samsung flat screen televisions – I came close to phoning my landlord and cancelling my apartment rent agreement, as it was a poor competitor to what was on offer at the Ramada.

If you are craving such well-known dishes such as escalmoles, haggis, or casu marzu, you will be disappointed as they are not offered, or even known by the staff to exist. I guarantee that you will get perplexed looks should you demand any of these or similar. Wikipedia and the contact information to a good importing company may help rectify this if demand becomes great enough. However, for standard fare, PJ Billington’s is a safe bet with fare that will satisfy most guests. My server for breakfast was both friendly and efficient; I asked if she were available to conduct a seminar on service to the staff of a faux-Japanese steakhouse in Midland Michigan, but was politely rejected. That place really sucks and could use her guidance.

The various soaps left in the room bathrooms are made of the finest ingredients, likely hand-crafted and bottled by skilled artisans who have honed their skills over many generations – It is good to see that the small craftsman can still be competitive despite advances in modern manufacturing processes. To my small shock these were complimentary. I argue that for the single male looking for a mating partner, these ‘sugared citrus’-scented soaps could attract more women than all of the false advertising, conspiracy theories, and threats both Axe and Old Spice can concoct.

The bathrooms themselves are clean, with modern shower curtains and showerheads that utilize a number of settings, from ‘gentle rainfall’ to ‘taint scrubber max.’

Upon opening the free in-room packet of coffee, again one is taken aback by the generosity of the hotel staff – A hearty sniff of the earthy Arabica blend reveals a medley of fragrant notes and undertones. Lastly, I was pleased to see that the two bottles of water left on the table were also complementary. Other hotels, despite it being an affront to the almighty, charge a fee. I applaud hotel management for not making our divine creator vomit with rage.

Lastly, they do offer an airport shuttle service. This is a much better option than walking along the highway to catch your flight.

In all, I recommend the Ramada St. John's. I have stayed at this hotel on two occasions in the past year and on each visit found the rooms to be in great shape, the staff courteous and friendly, and the price much more appealing than competitors elsewhere in the city. If I could give the staff a hug I would do just that.

The hallway is a bit dated, winds around and its a bit of a walk to get to the elevators.

The room is quiet, clean and large.

Whenever I called down to get a wakeup call, the staff immediately picked up.

Wireless interent was included and worked pretty good.

The pub has updated its menu and the food is better.

If you dont mind walking about 10 minutes, there is a Swiss Chalet, Montana's and other places to eat as well.

I like the taxi direct line in the lobby

Stayed here on business as it was in a very convenient location for my meeting. However I found the hotel (hallways, elevator, stairwell areas in particular) to be a little dated and in need of refurbishment. Wireless internet was not included in the room rate. Front desk service could have been a little friendlier during check-in and check-out.

We thank all of our guests for providing feedback. In reply to this particular review our wireless internet is free and included in the room rate, this is an expected and very important service that we are very happy to provide to all our guests at no charge. In regards to the comment and others made earlier about our hallways in need of refurbishment, we will be doing enhancements later this year into the Spring of 2012. At this time we are adding a small extension to the hotel that will provide us with additional space to place all of our pop machines and move them away from the vicinity of the elevators. During this work we will be completing the enhancements to our corridors. Yours in hospitality....Greg Fleming, General Manager

Very helpful courteous staff. Rooms are large and comfortable but do need some upgrading - which the hotel seems to be working on.

The room itself was nice and clean, with a large comfy bed. The corridors were old and worn; the elevator small and inconveniently placed. We came with lots of luggage, and had to enter and exit through the restaurant with luggage cart due to steps inconveniently placed in the lobby. Pushing the cart up narrow, long ramps to get to the elevator was more exercise than I was looking for, and maneuvering past the pop and ice machines to get into the elevator with the cart was another inconvenience. Although downtown St John's is enchanting, the area that this hotel is located in is anytown, ugly North America. Would recommend staying here only if you have a car and very little luggage. Most of the lobby staff were adequate only or less than adequate. Shuttle driver and the waitress we dealt with were gems.

In response to this review it is important to explain that we do understand the concerns in regards to the elevator not being closer to our main lobby area. The hotel was built in 1974 and unfortunately the building was constructed in such a way that is not convenient for some people. If guests wish to take one of our luggage carts to our parking lot to load luggage, access back into the hotel lobby with the cart is through our restaurant entrance which is at ground level right next to and immediately accessible to the main lobby area. The reason for this alternative access is due to a set of 3 steps in the main lobby leading from the main entrance. Hundreds of guests do this and have had no concerns. The pop machine that is referred to has been removed in order to provide better and convenient access into the elevator.

We happened to get to St. John's a day early and so we can compare the Ramada Hotel where we had (unfortunately) pre-booked 3 days & the Holiday Inn St. John's that had room for us the day we arrived early....and there is no comparison. It is hard to fathom 1) how the Ramada outranks the Holiday Inn on Trip Advisor and 2) where the Ramada spent a couple of million dollars in a recent renovation. The Ramada is one very tired and outdated hotel. It also has some serious accessibility issues unless someone tells you that you can bring your luggage through the restaurant and into the hotel (!) But if you do, you are at the very opposite end of the building to take the scary elevator that creaks and groans. The elevator fits 4 people but our family decided against taking it for the most part, but when we did, we decided not to travel in it together to allow other family members to get help if required! The fitness area is a makeshift extra room where they could not even find the time to take the headboards off of the walls. Also, the beds were not as advertised so CAUTION to those with a bad back!

Room Tip: A Premium room should not be a Fridge & Stove

We thank everyone for their reviews. As is the case with this particular review we understand that our guests have their opinions and level of expectation that we cannot always meet. Overall we do feel it is important to note that we are continually upgrading and making improvements to our hotel on a routine basis. We are proud to receive many outstanding comments and feedback from hundreds of our guests on a regular basis which culminated in receiving the prestigious award of Best of 2010 from Ramada Worldwide. This award recognized our hotel as one of best among all Ramada properties worldwide that now totals just less than 900. We are confident that we provide all guests with very good quality rooms at a very fair price, with very high standards of cleanliness and service.

Passable if you need a place to lay your head, but no frills. Not much in the way of a place to eat. Very poor location. For a new hotel, meeting rooms etc are not really what one would expect.

We thank everyone who posts a review. It is important information that we know many people use in order to make a decision as to where to stay. Based on your purpose and where you wish to be located during your visit to St. John's we offer a very convenient location for some people and not a good location for others. There are many websites and services that provide competitive rates and offers and some of these providers do not indicate the location of the hotel until the booking is completed and confirmed. We do recommend to everyone that is not familiar with St. John's to contact us by phone or email and ask any questions you wish regarding the location of our hotel and its proximity to places you are required or wish to visit.
Yours in hospitality, Greg Fleming, General Manager.
