The Holiday Inn St. John's offers a standard HI experience in terms of rooms. Clean, comfortable and large rooms that are a little dated. What sets the hotel apart is the service. Exceptionally friendly staff but to be fair, this is a typical 'Newfie' trait. The hotel bar is good and food is pretty good.

The hotel is between the airport and the city. The hotel is a 30-45 minute walk to Water Street depending on how quickly you walk.

I stayed at this hotel on a business trip. It's clearly a very old hotel that will suffer when some of the newer hotels (especially the Holiday Inn Express at the airport) are built. That said,it was very clean, and the room was a good size, but it has a very strange layout and is very dated.

On checking in the reception staff were very helpful and efficient - even lending me a small screwdriver to fix my glasses. I had lunch in the East Side Marios which is the 'in house' restaurant within the hotel, which was OK but the menu was very limited - OK if you like pizza and pasta, but thats about it. In the evening I didn't want to go to East Side Marios again, so I sat at the bar....and waited............then waited some more.........and some more. After about 15 minuted the server asked me if I wanted a drink and a menu, to which I replied 'yes'. After another 5 minutes wait, I reminder her that I was here - and so it went on. I wouldn't have minded so much if they were busy, but they weren't. Part of this time I could see the server talking to people at other tables, but for most of the time there was no sight of anyone working there.

This hotel is OK. It was old and tired with a very strange layout but the room was clean and comfortable. There are better hotels in the area, and I'm sure this hotel will suffer as the newer hotels open up.

Dear Mark H.

Thank you for your comments, they are always appreciated.

We are glad to hear you found your hotel accomodations clean and comforatable along with our team members being friendly and helpful to you.

Our hotel was built in 1966, at that time, the design layout for rooms was a "split" washroom and most of the rooms are of that design. We do look forward to our next set of renovations for the property as well.

We are dissapointed to hear to did not find a large enough variety on our menu at East Side Mario's. It does have a range of appetizers, soups, salads, pasta, pizza, steaks, fish, chicken, and gluten friendly items as well. We will certainley share your bar experience with our Team members, to improve upon service.

Thank you again for your comments.

I am from Manitoba and my family was visiting St. John's Newfoundland for a vacation. We had never been to the eastern side of the country before and didn't know what to expect. Our flight arrived later at night and so we checked in around 11:30pm on Friday August 9th. When we checked in our first impression of the Newfoundland people was terrible. The man that checked us in was extremely rude and informal. He first claimed that we didn't have a reservation there because he couldn't find it. However we had the confirmation email with the confirmation number printed out and in front of him. When he did find it he roughly slapped the paper down on the desk and told us to sign. He didn't say what we were signing either so we took the time to read it. Which he rolled his eyes to. I work in a hotel and so I know that it is mandatory to receive a damage deposit or a credit card and a photo ID at check in. He did none of those things.
In the morning when we tried to call one of the tour guides we couldn't call out because they didn't have our credit card on file. Which meant we had to go down to the front desk again to get the card swiped, when it should've just been done at check in.
One of the mornings that we were sleeping housekeeping knocked on our door once then tried to come in our room we had the deadbolt on so they couldn't come in however they tried to come in another two times, that's when I went to the door and said "Sorry still in room" They didn't apologize they just stopped trying to open the door. We made sure to keep the do not disturb sign on the door since then.
However the whole stay was not horrible at all. The ladies at the front desk were a joy to talk to. They were extremely helpful when we asked for recommendations of restaurants and of things to do around the city.
Overall I would say that this hotel is OKAY to stay at. My only suggestion is to only speak to the ladies who work there.

Dear TaylorWpg:

Thank you for your comments, they are always appreciated.

It was unfortunate your reception was not as welcoming and we do apologize for that. This will be reviewed with our Team Member to ensure we can avoid such a situation again.

Your housekeeping experience has been reviewed with the Department Head to ensure we can avoid this in the future.

Loud with kids running up and down hallways all night, busy with drunks.

Parking lot completely full, good luck funding a spot!

I wouldn't stay here for business, maybe a cheap family stay if you have kids with you and you're sleeping in late in the morning.

Quite annoying as some people have to sleep and get up to work!

Booked this hotel last minute as it was the only one in St. John's that had a room available. Check-in was quick however the front desk staff weren't overly friendly. Just there to do their job. The room was a king suite. It was a great room. Clean and tidy. The bed was extremely comfortable. I didn't like that the glasses in the room were in the bathroom and they weren't wrapped or covered. Also thought it was kind of strange that the coffee maker was in the bathroom. Over all a great and comfortable stay.

When we first checked in, the room we got was disappointing. My first reaction was "I guess we got what we paid for." (we did Priceline since St. John's was surprisingly expensive to us). The top sheet was dirty and had a few hairs on it. The room was an accessible one which was odd because we didn't request one. I mention this because there is no tub, but rather the entire bathroom is a giant shower. It was on the ground floor next to a side entrance where people smoked which meant having conversations right outside our window.

However, when these concerns were brought up, the woman at the front desk was very helpful and accommodating. She did not give excuses and apologized. She moved us to a different room which felt much better and cleaner. The bed was cozy. This is what I typically think a Holiday Inn room should be like. Thanks so much for the stay!

Room Tip: Avoid room 236 unless you need an accessible room

This hotel is surprisingly outdated. Staff not very helpful. I was so disappointed, that I decided to kick around the Baccalieu Trail instead of going back. Main floor room smelled musty, lamp didn't work. Pluses are TV widescreen with local cable; real glasses and coffee cups! Great balcony overlooking Kent's Pond.
