“Wow! It is both entertaining and educational.”

We visited the Johnson Geo Centre on a trip to NL three years ago, and we were really impressed. We vowed to return--and are doing so this summer. Now that we are members of Trip Advisor, we are using it to plan our coming trip. I was surprised to find only three comments about the Geo Centre. One of those is somewhat negative, but it is clearly no longer valid. It was written just after the Centre opened, and it does not reflect at all what we experienced. We found the Johnson Geo Centre to be of high professional caliber. It was both entertainiing and ecucational. We have recommended it to others and they also really liked it.

“understanding the Rock...”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 7 June 2008

Well worth the visit for the very interesting way the building was built to showcase the natural bedrock as part of the experience, as well as for the displays, audio-visuals, and the gift shop. My favourite part is the collection of boulders representing the geology of many parts of the province - carefully chosen by a well-known local geologist and displayed around the building in a gravel garden. As an architect, I must say that the design of the building works exceptionally well with the educational purpose of the facility. It's also near the Cabot Tower and spectacular views out over the Atlantic. I plan on returning.

Since my husband is a keen amateur geologist, we really looked forward to visiting the Johnson Geo Centre. We discovered a science centre which was in its first year of operation, and it showed.

The displays were both too basic, and too boring. Not enough was hands-on (with the exception of a whole bunch of large rock samples); instead, most of the budget seems to have been invested in videos, which were not well set-up for viewing. I've been to a number of other Canadian science centres (Royal Tyrrell Museum, Alexander Graham Bell Centre, Ontario Science Centre) and the best (and usual) setup for videos is to provide a small (4-12 seat) theatre for each one, so that several people can catch each screening, without having to block out the noise from the rest of the science centre. But here, the only way to see the videos was to stand up and watch a small TV screen, and try to filter out the background noise.

There was one interpreter on the main level the entire time that we were there, and he was clearly unclear on what his role was; in fact, he seemed quite reluctant to interact with the visitors at all.

With so many great large and small science centres to learn from in Canada, it was frankly rather dismaying to find this brand new one to be such a disappointment, and repeating many of the errors of bad design from 20 years ago. I hope that things will improve as the Geo Centre finds its feet in the next few years.
