Hometel on Signal Hill

I think the building was intended to be townhouses; not a hotel. That can be problematic, I suppose. Several reviewers mentioned noise as a problem; that, didn't deter me because I am a sound sleeper. Yes, I could hear the clomping of people going up and down stairs and in the rooms above me; but, that was like maybe 3 times in a 24 hour period and briefly each time. This place is fairly new and very clean. The staff are exceptionally friendly...well, they are Newfoundlanders, after all. The location is great, you can walk most anywhere from Quidi Vidi to the convention center. The breakfast is somewhat sparse; like 'we told you we were including breakfast, so here it is.' Cereal, toast, jam, muffins, yoghurt, orange juice, sliced orange, apples, hard boiled eggs and coffee. It was lacking in my view, but...you have Belbin's Grocery just a block or two down Quidi Vidi Road. There I bought Kiwi, Banana, Cream Cheese, Smoked Fish and I scrambled a raw egg from the refrigerator in a paper cup in the microwave; and voila...a veritable feast for my brekkie. Overall I was well pleased with my experience at this hotel and am not hesitant to recommend it.

We got a great room (clean, well appointed) at a really reasonable (off-season) price in a convenient downtown location. The staff is great and the breakfast (with the room) was one of the better continental breakfasts (it had protein in the form of boiled eggs, a selection of yoghurts and cereals along with the usual). Further, the staff didn't mind me helping myself to the refrigerator when stuff on the buffet shelf ran out. All-in-all, very comfortable.
The one downside is parking, There's barely enough room for a small car between the driveways and only space for one vehicle in each driveway despite the fact that each unit has 3 or four rooms. If you drive a bigger vehicle or don't like to park on the street you'll find this inconvenient. There is a large building behind the Hometel with lots of parking but the signage states it is for that building only. Perhaps you can negotiate something with them but it is a bit of a nuisance.

Room Tip: 3rd floor rooms are walk up but are probably quieter than the 1st floor rooms since those are on the...

This was a great place to stay location wise, but it offered nothing special. The biggest downside was the vacinity of the rooms. It is like a big house and you are renting a room. If you are looking for a hotel room, I must steer you in another direction. Echoing what others have wrote, there is no noise reduction and privacy was definitely an issue.

This is the best spot in the city. Easy walk to downtown and up to Signal Hill. I've been coming here for 6 years now and the place is definitely starting to get worn. Breakfast is pretty standard and parking is all right IF you can get a spot in front. Staff is a little unfriendly and acts irritated sometimes when I've checked in. If you can surpass the lack of customer service, you'll be OK staying here.

Room Tip: Don't pick any room on the second floor. there's no soaking tub and not very secure.

After reading Kyo S's review, I hope it wasn't us in the room upstairs!!!!

As others have echoed, the biggest issue with these townhouses is noise. There is no way that these buildings started out as hotel units, and therefore there is zero insulation in any of the walls or doors. One is able to hear every word of a normal conversation in the next room. The lack of carpeting makes those on the bottom floor listen to every loud footstep from upstairs. Depending on your constitution, this could make your head explode.

What this hotel delivers is a small, well appointed room, with all the amenities. Our room was clean with a very comfortable bed, both high priorities for us in choosing an establishment. Front office staff were very hospitable, and the included continental breakfast includes coffee and juice, muffins, fruit, yoghurt, toast and cereal.

Hometel is very good value. If the noise is too much a bother, be prepared to pay double the nightly rate at proximal chain hotels.

Location was good, the bed was quite firm and the room very clean. Seemed like a great setup until... the people staying upstairs moved in. Now in their defense, it had nothing to do with them purposefully being loud and inconsiderate. The problems stemmed from:
1. there is no door that separates the upstairs from the downstairs hallway, the stairway goes right up into an open area with a kitchen and dining table
2. the floor has no covering, it's bare wooden floor. We heard chair legs scraping above us all night while we tried to sleep and could hear voices like they were right outside our door.

This was enough to unfortunately erase all that was actually good with the place. The room we stayed in was well furnished and comfortable. The breakfast served in the morning was quite hearty.

Carpeting the upstairs and providing better division from the downstairs might be enough to eliminate some of the noise for folks staying in the downstairs rooms.

Room Tip: Try and get an upstairs accommodation, probably costs more since it includes a kitchen. And please...

Stayed one night on the second floor of one unit; bright and clean; flat-screen, fridge and coffee maker; no bath, but spacious shower. Judging from my unit, the hotel is a re-furb of townhouses. On my floor was a kitchen and dining area (not in use) and my bedroom, which would have been a den/dining area. Only interior doors with a chain lock separated me from the corridor. But, I still felt safe and secure. If you are looking to rent an entire townhouse for a gathering, it would be ideal.

Room Tip: Ask if the other rooms in your unit are also occupied, if you are concerned about noise or security.
