My experience echoed previous reviews I collected. Hit or miss and mine was a near miss. For the price I did expect better. Overall service was good but the calamari appetizer was just luke warm and a little soggy. The salmon main was about medium temp when served but had a nice taste balance for farm salmon. I would not return on a personal visit. There are many more options in the neighbourhood for the same quality and for less cost.

Nice place and great staff. Good for lunches and breakfast. The best cod and fries in town. The staff is very friendly and sensitive. What more is there to say. It is not possible to complete the at least 200 signs review as requested by tripadvisor before this review can be posted which i honestly feel is ridiculous when in a few words one can describe a very good restaurant. Moreover if one would like to find a nice place to eat long write ups like this are far from attractive and a waste of space and bytes. So stop the crap and enjoy the Bacalao restaurant in mery St Johns Newfoundland. And if the standard at tripadvisor is to write reviews of at least 200 characters the better can start looking for professional authors rather than silly guys just visiting a restaurant and who like to make their point in one single line.

A very disappointing experience! As part of a party of 4 complete for a reservation for Brunch at 1pm on a Sunday, we arrived an were seated after a10 min wait. We were served coffee after half another hour wait and menus orders were taken. An hour after our arrival, 3 out of 4 of us got our food. I was told that there was a mix up in the kitchen but they bring me some toast while I was waiting. The other order never did arrive and an hour and a half after our arrival three of our party had their meal finished and I still had not received any food. When we brought this up upon paying the bill, the answer was a shrug and "sorry". Extreme lack of customer service here topped off with a "who cares" attitude.

I really liked the well-designed, if small, room. The bed was comfortable, the Keurig coffee machine a welcome addition given the not-so-great coffee one is sometimes served in NL. The air-conditioning was noisy and so was the street. Apart from that, it was an excellent location, even if the room looked out on an ugly parking lot. The corridors were dark and depressing, and smelled of cheap bathroom freshened spray. The check-in happened in a noisy bar, downstairs, as the "hotel" has no reception area. On balance, a comfortable room for the night. Overpriced, given lack of customer service, reflected also in the booking transaction, which one would expect of a b&b, not a boutique hotel in a city.

We stayed here for one night during our stay in St. John's and our room was just amazing. I believe it was #204. It's basically one huge room and there is a separate, large bathroom. The main room has a wall of windows that face out to Water Street, which is great if you enjoy watching people like we do. One wall is entirely exposed brick which gives it a lot of the old world character but then the rest of the place is very modern.

There is a very nice king size bed, a flat screen tv, an MP3 player that I was able to dock my iPhone 4s on, a small refrigerator, coffee maker, a very small desk area, a dresser and two oversized loveseats.

The bathroom has a walk in shower done in tile/slate with one of the "shower towers" that has a main shower head at the top and then about six adjustable body spray heads. There is an ultra modern sink and a huge tub with jets.

I was a little hesitant to stay here based on some comments from other reviewers. However, we didn't have a car during our stay, so parking was a non-issue. Our room was right on top of the very popular Blue On Water Restaurant and bar and we never heard noise in our room coming from the staff or patrons there. As a matter of fact, the street noise was not noticeable when we went to bed at midnight or so.

If I was pressed to find something to nitpick about, I would say this: The water temperature fluctuated wildly during our shower- normal to very hot, then cold. The bar does have glass "doors" that must be closed at night (although strangely we never heard them close) but we did hear them open at approx. 10 a.m. the next morning. It's just a buzzing for about 30 seconds. No big deal.

I wish that we would have booked our entire stay here. Highly, highly recommend.
