Location no. 2 during the Canada trip was Yellowknife and the Explorer Hotel is the place to go.
A pleasant experience by Canadian North and the classic 737-200 Combi plane was the way to reach Yellowknife. A free shuttle is offered, called the hotel by the public phone from the airport and waited, waited, waited till a second call and it seems something goes wrong, the shuttle arrived, but the driver doesn´t know something about our request. Well, it was in the late morning and the airport is an interesting place with all that special planes coming and going, ok so far.
A nice welcome from the young woman at the desk, the room, top floor as requested is ready and that´s finally good for us. Well maintained, spacious, clean and a nice view for the lakes.
KFC is down the street and also a recently opened supermarket.
WLAN is free and works with a good connection.
The tourist office is around the next corner where they offer crusier bikes for free, now that´s something for us and well recommended to have a ride around town and the lakes.
A well nights sleep, no noise and ready for breakfast. Not on the rate, 15.00 Dollars is ok in the end with the offers. Late checkout is also granted with the shuttle running as scheduled this time.
The usual question for the downsides?. Not the hotels fault, but to see all these alcohol addicted local people enjoying the warm weather outdoor also around the hotel is for sure something special and not in a positive way.

We got one of the last rooms available when we arrived but we lucked out, up to the top floor (8) facing out away from downtown--WHAT A VIEW! The checkin was seemless and friendly. Our room was more than adequate and nicely appointed although the wooden tv stand with doors plus the old tube TV have seen better days and probably should be upgraded. We ate that evening in the lounge with most of the main menu from their fancy restaurant available to us. They had a nice selection of import beers and our meals were very good. All in all, a very pleasant stay

Room Tip: We liked being high up on the back strictly because of the view we got.

I find the Explorer Hotel to be good hotel, but prices are a bit high. If you look closely, you will notice that the hotel requires repair and upgrade. Anyhow, my room was of good size, well furnished and reasonably clean. The only problem was that the house keeping storage room was right next door, so there's quite a bit of noise every morning. It would be bad when you spend the whole night watching Aurora and trying to catch some sleep during the day. You can hear the elevators from my room too.

We recollcated here in the depths of winter, having been put in the Days Inn by our travel agent. We should have known immediately this was the best place in town as the aircrews all got off the airport bus here.

Good rooms, quiet, good location. We didn't eat at the hotel as we were up early or out late looking at the lights or dog-sledding.

If you want a hotel, i think this is the best choice, otherwise a B&B will almost certainly be better than a number of the other options.

Room Tip: You may be able to see the Northern Lights from a room overlooking the back of the hotel

Stayed here in the Winter for business so didn't get to 'explore' the area as much as I would have liked. The hotel itself looks quite impressive from the outside, and the lobby is nice, but I found the rooms to be pretty ordinary and lacking character, similar to any other 3star hotel. However, they were clean and I have no complaints about the hotel, just not as nice as I was expecting. I'd rate the Explorer as a solid 3.5 stars, decent choice when in Yellowknife for business.

I did not expect to be working in YK this summer - but its just the way things went. Thankfully, not only were the staff at the hotel amazingly accommodating and friendly, but my end of day wind down drink was in the lounge each night. Often I was alone so the company of Skye and Amy was not just appreciated - but it became the highlight of my day! Considering the highly transient nature of the clientele, they always remembered my name, my drink, and what I last chatted them about. When I'm done this stint in YK, I'm gonna miss these ladies tremendously.

Do NOT go to YK and not stop in and see Skye and Amy at the Trapline Lounge. Say hi from Sonya!

PS. They make the BEST Hendrick's Gin and Tonic EVER!!!!

My husband, my cat and myself stayed at the Explorer recently while waiting to move into our apartment. We found the staff very helpful, our room was nice, had a fridge and microwave, which was handy, decent wifi and it was spotless. The best part of staying there was the lounge. The food was wonderful.. highly recommend the lamb pops and the deep fried mac and cheese (little bits and just YUM). After one evening there for dinner, Amy and Skye remembered our drink choices and what we like to eat. Not to mention that they make the BEST mojito in Canada! Now that we are settled here (pretty much anyway), the Explorer is and will always be our "go to" place for a bite and a drink. Thanks for making our intro to Yellowknife so welcoming. The first place we stayed at did not and was not even close to being clean. Hands down.. the best place to stay in Yellowknife.

Room Tip: Ask for a larger room if available, we did and they upgraded us to a jr. suite (two queen beds). Tak...
