“Best Hotel In Town”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 30 November 2010

Clean, spacious, updated, quiet, and safe hotel.
Have stayed here many, many times over the years, and since the upgrades, it's been even better. The rooms are spotless, the Sunday brunch is fantastic, and there is a nice view from the upper floors.

Front desk staff don't always seem to know what's up...but they have beer on tap in the lounge, so one cancels the other out...Oh, and a free shuttle to and from the airport!

Entering the Explorer Hotel, it provides a solid impression. It is on a hill with great views of the surrounding areas. The lobby is clean, functional, and the front desk efficient.

Entering the room, you have a mixed bag. The bed is great and the room large. Where it fails is a 20 year-old TV that is well past its working life. The colours were off, the remote was poor and the channel selection pathetic. The wireless internet worked at the pace of a turtle and I was unable to access most websites I frequent.

The washroom is surprisingly poor. It resembles a two-star or one-star motel. It is clean, but that is about it. The shower start-up is as confusing and bizarre as I have ever encountered. The tiles are the small tiny tiles you often saw in the 1980s and look very cheap in a hotel that charges $170 per night.

The place needs a thorough renovation.

Check in was slow as I had to wait for the girl to get off the phone (I believe personal call). Asked her if I could rent a canoe or go out on the lake. She referred me to the visitors center across the Street. (did not open till noon). She did not know anything to do said she just got here. Dust. I mean dust. The windows do not open so it is not generated because of dust coming thorough the window. I cannot tell you when this room was dusted last. I had to take Kleenex and wipe off the TV screen (32” old).
All rooms air conditioned. Black out Drapes were good. Old bedspreads, pills, stained, soiled and dark orange color. Single Sheet (fitted bottom flat top no blanket). Use dirty bedspread for cover at night Basic bathroom amenities. Straight shower rod. (good white shower curtain clean) - 3 X 3 tiles need cleaning and/or new grout. The caulk line where the tile meets the tub was just redone at least that was white. Towels – thin and very few. 4 person occupancy room had 2 Bath towels, 1 hand towel and 1 wash cloth all thin and scratchy. When I took a towel off the towel bar over the toilet the bar fell off the wall in my hands, no towel hook on the back of the bathroom door. 4 cup coffee pot in room, NO coffee or creamer/sugar pack in room . In room directory is in English and Japanese (no French) . No Green program in place. Went to plug in my phone and had to move the end table. DIRTY. DIRTY. I had room 516

Stayed three nights--in Yellowknife for assignment:
Pros: The hotel and rooms are maintained and in good condition
Free wireless access
Comfortable beds with fitted sheets
Rooms are a decent size.
Nothing screams luxury but it is all acceptable.
Cons:
The Fitness Center is located in a windowless basement room well away from the rooms and bordered on crummy with stale air.
I did not eat in the resturant or visit the bar--but most food in Yellowknife is expensive

Good solid place to stay. Some of the older rooms do not have the comforts of the updated rooms on the higher floors.

I have traveled to the Explorer Hotel on and off for company business every week for the last year or so. As a regular, I valued the Explorer for its wonderful front desk staff. No task is ever to big or too small, and the staff are ready and willing to make the impossible possible. They always made sure that I had the room I like and were always able to accommodate my last minute business needs, even in busy periods. Whenever I checked in, I was greeted with a smile and a warmth that really made the hotel my home away from home, and my time in Yellowknife while working away from my home and family after a ten hour plane journey, that much bearable.

Trader's Grill offers great food, but a little pricey for what you are getting, and the lounge (when it is open), is a great place to spend unwinding after a hard day's work. The rooms are comfy, but could do with better lighting. And the housekeeping staff really do a good, consistent job cleaning. While it is a shame that the hotel doesn't offer facilities for long term stays, such as refrigerators, microwaves, on site laundry facilities (even a coin operated washer and dryer), or room service after 9pm, it is a decent place for a business traveler to stay while in the great white north. I would like to thank Amber, Jinette, Kelly, Daniel, Sally and all the others that made my time, and my last drawn out months painless!

The Good: the accommodations at the Explorer are very clean and comfortable - much like average to good hotels in the south. Compared to other hotels in Yellowknife it really is top notch.

The Bad: the front counter service is very cold and impersonal; don't expect to see a friendly face when you check in after a long day of travel.

The Ugly: A drunk man hanging out in the lobby harassing and intimidating me had to be the worst hotel experience I've ever had. What's worse is the front desk really didn't seem all that concerned. It's worth saying that this incident happened only minutes after a different drunk man was kicked out. All this before 7pm!
