Ranked #24 of 50 things to do in Yellowknife
Attraction details
Reviewed 7 January 2013

From the Northern Arts and Cultural Centre website
Mandate: "To encourage the development of the performing arts from all cultural traditions and to provide a venue in the Northwest Territories for community and professionally produced performances."
"...The Northern Arts and Cultural Centre (NACC) is a 313 seat theatre facility located in Yellowknife, Northwest Territories, Canada. It was built with the help of the publisher of the Globe and Mail newspaper whose fund raising efforts raised monies from varied sources across Canada. It is the only fully equipped live performance theatre in the NWT...."
It is physically and spiritually connected to Sir John Franklin High School. so the school's music and drama programs use NACC as their performance space and exchange the school's furnace heats NACC.
NACC creates and presents its own program of local, national and international performers every year and rents it's performance space to several Yellowknife based cultural groups so that they can have access to a professional venue for their performances.
You might find dance, plays, musical performances or an occasional film or film festival on offer at NACC. Cultural workshops are also a staple every year.
Whatever is on the playbill, you're sure of an evening of quality entertainment or artistic education.

There was so much to see here that you need some time. Some areas were unfinished and they could have put some signage to explain when it will be ready but overall I enjoyed the visit.

A great way to appreciate the indiginous people, their
heritage, history, arts and crafts, and their participation
in a yellowknife history of mining, fihing, etc. Abundance
of waterways and lakes makes for a very pastoral connection with the enviroment. City has a nice feel, and a clean footprint.

Great history of the area. Lots of artifacts, minerals, dioramas, a huge canoe made of skins. Lots of information. Free.

We were visiting between flights, so not much time. We were able to visit quite a bit, but could have spent many more hours enjoying. They have a large exhibit of the animals which inhabit the area, plus interesting First Nation history.
